DF Gameplay Questions / Re: DfHack but not cheating?
« on: May 14, 2013, 02:59:57 pm »
I tried Therapist a couple of years ago. It was definitely nice, but starting up a separate program got a bit tiresome

Fortunately, DFHack replicates the basic Therapist behavior right into the normal DF interface.

Does it?  What's the command to do that?  I wouldn't mind going from 3 windows down to 2...

DF Gameplay Questions / gathering plants in evil biome?
« on: May 14, 2013, 02:52:56 pm »
I'd like to try cultivating sliver barbs, but each time I've tried to embark on an evil biome, the plants have all been dead to begin with, and "gather plants" is futile.  Is this the case with all evil biomes, or have I just been unlucky? (I only tried 2-3 evil embarks.)  If this is ordinary, then what's the trick?  How does one cultivate sliver barbs or find a renewable source of glumprong wood?

JOanita, you might check out this map I found:
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=101280.msg4154136#msg4154136

It's a 5x4 embark with a volcano in the SE corner,  a stream with a one z-level waterfall that goes along the north and west edges, and most of the rest of the map is flat and heavily forested.  It's a warm map, so the river never freezes.  It has iron in the form of hematite as well as native gold.  It's an untamed wilds map, so it has giant creatures, but they aren't aggressive or evil.

In academia, PhD students are used as virtual slaves, so you could simply call the lower class "grad student".  Maybe the military class could be the "postdoc" class.

Good intro!  And what a delight, a succession game has finally dorfed me as a male.  Looking forward to the embark.

In terms of scientific grant funding, the head of a project responsible for the funds is called the "PI" or principal investigator.  That could be one of the titles (perhaps for the mayor?).  You could use academic titles like Professor > Dean > Provost > President instead of Baron, Count, Duke, King.  Just some ideas.

And I'm going to be honest, the fort was a quagmire.  I could have reorganized it, but it'd have taken me forever.
I don't think that's true.  At the end of my turn the workshops were well-organized and we had plenty of stocks of everything.  The first few floors of the fort were confusing but no longer really in use except as stockpiles.  You got the water hooked up and the military organized.  IMHO this fort is ripe for a good megaproject.  My main problem with the fort was that it was boring... not enough was going wrong!  Not enough enemies!

I use the init file, which fixes a number of bugs.  I also think it's very important to use the "fixmigrant" bug.  This bug seems to happen when a dwarf who was previously a caravan trader arrives as a new migrant.  He'll appear not as a citizen but as a friendly NPC, and seems to hold up the line of migrants who would follow him onto the map.  You center the cursor on him, tab to DFhack, and type "tweak fixmigrant" to resolve the bug.

I would also point out that there's not really any such thing as "cheating" in a sandbox game.  If you have some cool architectural vision for the fort and want to make sure it doesn't overlap with a cavern, there's nothing "cheap" about using the "reveal" command to check where the caverns are, and then "unreveal" to hide the map again.

Let the minotaur path into the cage traps, capture it, then incorporate it into a megatrap or use it for sport.

Good work, nice write-up evictedsaint!

Is my dwarf still alive?  I recall there only being 2 or 3 soldiers in the military when I ended my turn.  You must have done quite a re-organization if you were able to drive off a goblin siege.

192
Yeah, that'll do.

Very nice, very nice.
Can I sign up for the first turn after you?  Dorf me as part of the noble/military class.

I have a pretty interesting map which is joyous wilds and terrifying, but no ocean.  Both biomes are savannah and they more or less represent the two sides of a central stream (although there is some evil land on the good side and vice versa).  No evil weather apparent.  I don't know if the evil biome is reanimating... I've been smart enough not to let my dwarfs die there.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Bugfixes?

These kind of requests for bug fixes probably get more attention if they come paper-clipped to a $50 donation to the game's programmers.  I would think.
