Other Games / Not untill this character dies
« on: May 04, 2010, 05:59:28 pm »
I started a dwarf swordmaster + mimic a few weeks before DF2010 was released to kill time.  I have checked Bay12 hundreds of times since Sept 2008 for the release which was aparently pointless.  Sadly, I'm still waiting for this char to die before I swich games.

To 'win' ToME has been unrealized goal of mine for a long time and I'm finally getting rather close sticking it out.  I'm pushing into Angband for loot now so it shouldn't be too much longer considering this is the first char that's lasted this long.  Atlas the Titan and a glob of time hounds almost did the me the favor.

Has anybody heard about this guy yet?

I think between the dwarves and Germans, we could really be onto something here.

that looks interesting but that's not it.

The only other info I have to identify the RL were the letters DK at the end.  That might mean nothing more than the video's creator was from Germany, though.

About a year ago, there was trailer posted here to some roguelike.  There was your standard red '@' killing green 'g's etc to epic music.  Maybe it was ADOM, I dunno.

Anybody have a link? - thanks

Thank you for the excellent advice.  I had seen forum.t-o-m-e.net but mistook the hacking problem for a lack of activity.  It's great that there's still an active community since ToME is still one of the most interesting things out there.  I haven't enjoyed playing a game this well for several years.

I was killed once in tome3 (later switched to 2) and the only message I got was:  "Some of your food has been destroyed. You die." - ever since, I've been scared to carry much food.  Kinda why I latched onto the junkart.

Thank you.

I haven't enjoyed playing a game this well for several years.  I've been going to bed every night thinking about it instead of life's problems.

Other Games / ToME Newbie Questions
« on: September 27, 2009, 07:28:58 am »
Sorry to start this here, but this is the only forum that I know old ToME players are still active.  I have been to the wiki and there's a lot of great stuff there, but I've got lingering questions still.

(1) Is there a better forum where ToME is currently active?

(2) Can I count on the satisfy hunger junkart to feed me?  It's been working great so far.

(3) Can a swordsdwarf win this game?  Will it be significantly more difficult?

(4) I've got a lvl 27 swordsdwarf going.  Where's a good place to read about specific serious risks?  I'm not as interested about learning things the hard way with this character.

(5) I've only been spending skill points in combat, weapon mastery, and sword-mastery.  I've got 59 points banked and I'm considering working on disarm since traps are becoming a serious obstacle.  Any recommendations?

Thanks for any advice.

I don't know how I missed this one for so long.  I like playing this the same way my wife likes playing bejeweled type games.

The posting activity on this game seems to have waned since 2004-2006.  Is release 3 really still being worked on?

I've been trying to get into this.  I've done a bunch of quests and have money, but I've wound up leveling just walking around.  Following forum advice, I've got a lvl 5 priest with a lot of money and speed gear.  I didn't manage to get farming with all the plat coins, a farm, and a large collection of rotten food.  This said, I've got a few of quick questions that I haven't been able to find answers.

Why did I work so hard to get farming going again?  It is a lot more trouble than other viable food.

I've got the proper religion and I'm almost killing my character carrying around too much rotten food.  When do the seeds come in?  Will the rotten food disappear when the seeds are given?  I've had this rotten food for weeks and pretty tired of carrying it around.

Only things not mentioned so far that I myself grew up on is Might and Magic, Questron, and Alternate Reality.  Alternate reality is interesting enough that you Wizardy, Bard's Tale, or Rogue fans might consider emulating a C64 or atari ROM of it.  Alternate Reality really set the stage for open ended games like Daggerfall, imo.

Thanks for the help.  He is really liking Pokemon.  Once he sorta starts to get equipment, exp, gold etc, we might move on to the more tricky ones.  I was so proud when he caught onto the wasd-style movement  :'(  It's probably good to get kids playing games that you lose when you're not careful or even unlucky.

I've been playing with Powder and Elona myself and like them pretty well.  Elona feels like it's filling a hole in my life that I never knew I had.  Bay12 is the perfect community for advice like this.

We're giving Pokemon Mystery Dungeon a try.  The story is about the right level for him and he's having fun with it.  I'll check out Breath of Fire and Stone Soup later tonight.  I've read other good things about Stone Soup and it sounds like it might be a fun diversion for me as well.  Thanks for the advice.

I'm looking for a simple fantasy RPG for my 4yo son.  Could be roguelike or maybe flash... I'm not going to be picky.  He's close to being able to handle mindless games like Fate, but that's not exactly the direction I want to take him.  Don't need great graphics, but I don't see him decrypting Angaband or ADOM ascii for a few years yet.

We've had our fill of reading, math, and Dora the Explorer games.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.
