I read about using bolts as a way to extend the adamantine supplies, but given the possibility of losing the bolts, I dunno about that one.
Use coins instead. It's 110% yield without even splitting and 5000% fully split (using trading.)

Libraries would come handy for skills now difficult to train such as the Health skills.
In the real world, surgery didn't get practical until relatively modern weaponry and relatively modern sanitation combined to give the doctors lots of still-living wounded to practice upon (think US Civil War).

In Dwarf Fortress, HFS provides a similar service.
I'm sure they had books on drilling holes in peoples' heads long before then.

You do know that fortress mode days last like 1200 frames, right? (That's 6 real seconds of night at the default 100 FPS.) There's simply not enough time to do anything meaningful at the rate dwarves do stuff.

Caravans just need better pathing. If there are roads that lead from the edge of the map to the depot then they should prioritize one of those that best match the direction they are coming from.

Do you really trust Urist McHerald to not go on break at the exact moment the caravan decides to show up?

I had a thread some while ago regarding clothing.  Will see if I can find it.

Anyway, as a comment:

As we can melt metal items and recover a portion of metal, why not rip apart designated clothing (oh my yes, the worn stuff!) and recover a portion of thread?
(Pun intended?)

Who in their right mind would tear apart a worn shirt for thread? Even if some of the thread was still good it wouldn't be in any useful lengths. Thread is so ridiculously easy to obtain in DF that it would be pointless anyways. A better use would be burning worn clothes for ash, saving wood for charcoal.

To the dorfs:

Why are you all sneaking everywhere? None of you have hunting enabled and there is absolutely no wildlife on the map, so I don't understand what would convince you to skulk everywhere.

I know you lot are sneaking because I've noticed your ambushing skills increasing and you are all moving unbelievably slow.
