DF Suggestions / Coming of Age traditions
« on: February 04, 2013, 06:42:34 am »
Each civilization should have their own coming of age ceremony in which 13 years must do before they become adults.

For example, in one civilization, each child is forced to become an adventurer and slay a villain before coming back home. The effect of that is only a few adventurer made it back to become adults and people tend to produce lot of children against adventure death. As a result, the civilization is full of mighty warriors but is vastly outnumbered by any other civilizations.

On a serious note, the addition of live and nonstandard ammo may actually add something, launching a jar of helmet snakes or a cage of war dogs may be an effective way to weaken attackers.

As long they survive the initial impact.

Maybe you could have parachutes?

You should be able to use live enemies as projectiles in siege engines.

Tie a captured goblins, and then shoot him with a catapult at his own squad.

There should be a squad that's dedicated to only rescuing soldiers and civilians who have their pants down. Their job is basically to rush injured military dwarves, risking their lives on the battlefield. You can also control where they go on the battlefield.

Mostly, in peacetime, they train their dodging, speed, and shield use. They also sleep and eat in the same barrack. Also, you can awake them for emergency sessions, although that result in unhappy thoughts.

I imagine private merchants will benefit tremendously from speedy letters as well professions that benefits a lot from correspondence, such as magicians, historians, engineers, and other type of scholars.

Merchants can use the letters to communicate information about various market conditions, allowing them to make lot of money. (Homing pigeons anyone?)

Scholars needs to work with people across the world, write letters asking for book loans, or communicate to rivals about their mad new discovery.

Can't you create a high speed mail delivery system with outposts that have fresh horses and food and bed for couriers? That way, couriers work as part of a network.

My fortress is now entering late stage. I am working on making enough masterwork steel suits for each dwarf.

A while back, my dwarves murdered 3 forgotten beast that piled up. It wasn't so bad, although I lost 3 dwarves.

Hmm. You could have war correspondence that tell the dwarves' deeds and life in the war.

You could have historian sniff through the letters after the local government confiscated the letters under "national treasure" reason. A very good historian will be able to sniff through the lies and put the truth together.

I think for urgent news or if something is not worth an armed escort you could send a single dwarf who could walk, ride an animal, or travel by chariot.

A chariot is lot more useless if there's no paved roads. A horse or an eagle is better.

Couldn't news just come with the caravans?

That's one way to get messages, but for certain news, you want "pony express"

For example, urgent war messages, or messages for funeral invitations, sudden summary of a champion, etc.

Toady said that he wasn't morally opposed to the depiction of sex, though he was opposed to explicit depiction of rape and other sex crimes. However, he was wary of the media attention it would bring. The stuff you suggest is probably planned, but won't be implemented for quite a while.

So infanticide, torture, murder, and other form of violence ok, but not sex?  ???

DF Suggestions / Dwarven Postage System
« on: January 23, 2013, 03:55:51 pm »
I propose that there should be a dwarven postage system in which dwarves mail each other letters acrosses different forts and towns.

For example, if a 160 years old great grandmother just die, you will get a delivered a letter informing the relevant dwarf the losses, which will cause him to suffer bad thoughts.

However, it doesn't means all letters are delivered. If the mailman got murdered by bandits on the way, or the letter is lost on the way, etc, than the dwarves won't get notification in a timely manner or maybe not at all. Thus, it is prudent to send the same letter three times on different routes and different time.

If the territory is pretty safe, you can bet that delivery will be swift and timely. There can be a new job for clerks who have to write back that the dwarf in question is dead. Than you can have jobs for couriers and courier guards!

If you can lie about your kills, than it would make sense a system of headhunting evolving similar to what the samurai do. This is so to prove that the dwarf had in fact killed the enemy.
