DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: February 20, 2013, 03:15:37 am »
I'm just finishing up my defenses (bridge flanked by towers at the entrance, towers are connected to fortified and walkable walls forming a courtyard ending in another bridge, complete with 2-tile wide moats outside each wall), and everyone is in a pretty good mood. That is, until recently.

I had put my military to patrol outside the walls since most thieves/snatchers got away before they could catch them (seriously, they move 2x faster than my dwarves, not fair), and it worked wonders. However, it didn't work as well against ambushes, since, for some reason, my squad-members preferred to wander alone with quite some distance between them rather than moving in formation. Great for finding snatchers/thieves, but when you run into an ambush alone... well, let's just say I learned this the hard way. Lost a grand master marksdwarf, and as if that didn't hurt enough, he was apparently a guy with many friends in the squads, so they got quite grumpy.

Add to that the fact that many of my dwarves are wearing pretty worn clothing (I'm replacing it as fast as I can, but tailoring new outfits for 200 dwarves take time), and the military especially so since, due to their duties, they're never in position to grab the new clothes that comes out before someone else does (Yes, Urist McPeasant, I'm looking at you, you good-for-nothing fashionista). And I'm also trying to get them used to the sun, which they do not like.

Anyway, end result is unhappy, well-armed and well-trained dwarves. Not a good combination. I don't relish the thought of seeing how my completely untrained fortress guards fare against one of the soldiers should they choose to tantrum...

Oh, and I also got a baron recently. He went full-out tantrum. His sole complaint being that someone had a bigger dining room. The fact that all his other amenities had "Royal" status apparently wasn't enough to weigh this up.

...

Bloody nobles...

I'll add a related question here, if you don't mind.

I'm facing similar issues, I've got large-scale construction ongoing (replacing all visible clay walls and floors in my fortress' top 3 z-levels with stone, need a lot of stone). The "use blocks instead"-tip will be most helpful, but another problem I'm facing is that, between construction and regular stone-furniture making, I'm pretty much running out of stone. And I do not know why.

I have 5 miners, chopping away heartily, leaving LOADS of stone behind. And I have ~130 dwarves with stone-hauling enabled, lots of wheelbarrows, you name it. But they just won't collect the stones? They are listed as 'No job', idling away, with maybe one or two of them going, occasionally, to haul a stone. All this while the stockpiles are nearing empty.

Is there some way I can "force" them to go pick the bloody stones? This also affects my metal industry, since they won't gather coal-producing rocks.

But if I on the other hand go out and chop some trees, then ALL of them zerg out and collect. I just can't make any sense of this...

I use Ironhand graphics, mostly because it "eased" the learning curve a bit, at least for me. Would like to learn to read that ASCII ones though, if nothing else then just to be able to figure out what the heck is going on in various screenshots people are posting.

I must actually say that my fortress, amazingly enough, is in quite a good place right now.

Didn't get a siege (which I've had some problems with in the past) until pretty far into the game (I was at around ~130 dwarves when it struck, and normally they hit right when I hit 80), so I had plenty of time to prepare. Nothing fancy, just a moat, a bridge and two fortified towers (each manned by a full squad of marksdwarves), but it has worked wonders with the two sieges I've had so far. Haven't even needed to call on my 2 melee squads, except for some clean-up.

I've also had to kill 2 were-beasts (they seem to like my fortress for some reason), luckily without anyone getting infected.

I'm actually getting to a point right now where I don't really know what to do... Usually I'm busy making bedrooms and stuff, building/placing furniture etc, but now I've reached my max. population of dwarves (200, not including babies) with plenty of rooms to spare, and everything is running pretty much on auto right now. The only problem is that I forgot to make new clothes, and my dwarves are getting grumpy because of it, but I'm mending that at the moment.

I've found the caverns, but there doesn't seem to be anything interesting down there, and I don't feel quite confident enough to go looking for Candy (I think the Clowns will prove to be too much !!FUN!! right now).... Might go looking for iron, since I've never been able to find that (do you need to dig deep for that or what?), but we'll see...

Any suggestions?

After having toyed around a bit in adventurer mode, I decided to give fortress mode another go.

Going pretty well so far, I've been busy setting up a workshop area and storage, and was just about to start working on dining area and sleeping quarters when I noticed that every task suddenly took forever to do. Between summer and autumn, effectivity in the fortress had gone down by 50%. Some investigation revealed that my dwarves spent an unproportionate amount of time drinking. I also realized that the reason for this was due to a combination of the fact that I'd run out of booze and that the only viable water source was a long distance away (pretty big embark since I wanted both trees, mountains and a brook on the same map, and it just wouldn't fit otherwise, fortress and brook are in opposite corners), so running there, drinking and getting back took forever.

So, I decided to postpone other operations and instead started to construct a channel for a well (which I'd initially planned for later). Wasted some time digging a path from my fortress to the brook (should've just channeled down directly by the brook instead...), and then started channeling downwards about 5 z-levels. I made a mistake with my previous fortress where I had the reservoir only 1 z-level beneath my dining hall (where the well was located), which caused some flooding... not going to make that mistake again!

All went well, until I realized that one of my miners was thirsty. Ignored it for the moment (stupid) since I thought he was just being a good dwarf, focusing on his ongoing work instead of drinking (slacking). Again, given what I've previously experienced from dwarves and their OCD concerning drinking, eating, sleeping etc, this was stupid of me. Very much so.

It was only when he got dehydrated and hungry I realized something was wrong. I canceled his jobs, but he still loitered around down in the tunnel, starving and dehydrating. Only then did I notice that one of the ramps up had, somehow, become blocked. So now it's a race against time to dig some stairs for him to escape by (not to mention the fact that he has to make it all the way to the brook as well, and my guess is that he'll probably stop to eat first, which will likely kill him). Or I could just crack the last bit of wall between the channel and the brook, I think his chances of survival are the same no matter what. At least with the second option nobody can blame me, since he didn't die from neglect (I mean, I'd give him what he wants, right?).

Though I'd really hate to loose this guy, I have rooms that needs to be dug out!

Seems like I took a larger bite than I could chew in attacking an entire town...

It went well at first, killed off all the guards around the keep and walls, and started massacring the merchants and other civilians, moving from house to house.
But then I entered the markets... Got rushed by 50-odd crazy, bloodthirsty merchants. Managed to back away into a house on the first run and face them a few at a time, which worked well. Got tired after a while though, so I had to retreat.

After having a bit of a rest, I went back for round 2. Did the same approach, backed into a house when too many came at me at the same time, didn't work as well this time though...
There were a number of merchants inside the house as well, and one of them managed to stab me in my hand (through my iron gauntlet), which caused me enough pain to pass out... and the rest is history. To think I could have 333 notable kills (nice number), be the slayer of dragons, titans and other things, legendary in 4 skills, and STILL be a frikkin' wuz when it comes to a little pain... I mean, it was just a chipping of the bone, the hand wasn't even off! *sigh*

Must have been the dwarven children they kidnapped decades ago and who managed to grow up as the members of goblin society.

Maybe. Must've been a LOT of children though, since the dwarf-to-goblin ratio is like 50:1.

It's good fun purging this wicked civ though, couldn't bear myself to attacking friendlies before, but these guys just seem... wrong, so now it feels ok.

Came upon something really weird here.

I came to a new civ, and I asked them about their capital. They told me it was "Kissdemons", which I thought was a strange name, but then again, I've encountered civs with capital names like "Stranglehope" and such, so I didn't really think too much about it. Looked it up on the map though, and to my surprise I see that it's a Dark Fortress? Like wtf?

And from there it just got weirder.

Entered the first city belonging to the civ that I came to, and went to speak to their lord. And he's a goblin?! Once more, wtf?! And there were even a couple of goblin guards and children running around, all friendly. Weirder still, the town was mostly inhabited by dwarves, and I thought dwarves and goblins were mortal enemies beyond anything else.

Needless to say, I've decided that this abomination needs to be purged. Preferably with fire, if I can manage it.

Has anyone else seen something like this? I mean, I've seen civs with demons as leaders, but that's one thing, since you can assume that the demons are being "sneaky" about it, taking the guise of a human or something, but I wouldn't think goblins would be able to do the same? Real shocker.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Hmm, I think I need to make a correction here. Seems likely the elves weren't friendly after all, it's possible that there is some "trigger" that decides how they react to you when you encounter them, and sometimes that doesn't "kick in" when it should.

Noticed this when I wandered into a bandit encampment, and the first guy I met didn't attack. I talked to him, recruited him, and when I moved into the camp proper he was standing in the square I was moving to, so I "stepped" into him. Imagine my surprise when my adventurer suddenly decides to stab him in the head... Seems like whatever "trigger" there is kicked in at that moment, turning him hostile.

Or he was just trying to fool me, lulling me into a false sense of safety in order to backstab me later.

Went to kill a titan today, and as I got close I noticed that he seemed to be of the fire-throwing type.
No problem I thought, I figured it'd be the same as with a dragon (block the flames on a shield and close in), but there seems to be certain differences, which leads to my questions.

1. Can't you block fireball-attacks? He alternated between fire breathing / tossing fireballs, and I could only seem to block the former. Kind of annoying, first I didn't think they did anything (didn't show anything on my health status), but after a while I started melting, nearly killed me a couple of times.

2. I noticed that I couldn't get right next to him, my path was blocked one tile away for some reason (with no visible obstructions). This forced me to retreat several times (due to melting, needed to cool off and fast travel due to blood loss from it), until I finally realized I could alt-step close enough to cut him down (which was a 2-slash job, thankfully, would've melted to death otherwise). So question is, why is this? Is it something to do with titans themselves, or was it because this was a fire-guy (i.e. he was too hot to get close without careful stepping or something)?

Well... that escalated quickly.

Visited a city, and as per usual I went into the keep dungeon. Found no enemies down there, but what I did find was an entire underground (mostly) elven city!

And it was friendly! At least to me. My human companions didn't think so though. If they want to get killed, fine by me, but they didn't have to drag me into the mess with them.
I got out fine, my companions (and the elves) didn't.

Thought for sure that the city in which the dungeon-city was located were gonna go bonkers on me as well, but seems they weren't of the same civ or something (despite there being an elven majority up there). They even thanked me for killing the leader down there.

I must say that finding this hidden "elf-outcast" place was pretty cool, a nice little "touch" to the game.

Once again found myself alone outside at night, since I thought (wrongly) I could reach the next hamlet in time.

Got attacked by bogeys, and managed to strike the three of them down.

Wait, what? Only three? Surely something is amiss? Hmm? What is that noise in the distance?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Turns out the two remaining bogeys had decided to attack the domesticated wildlife that was hanging out nearby (I was pretty close to a hamlet when I got attacked), and that turned out to be a fatal mistake... they managed to get one of them down, and wound the other pretty badly before I decided to step in and lop it's head off, since it was giving the remaining animals a pretty good mauling. They fared much better than I thought they would though (especially considering there were no hoofed animals in the group).

"Now you will know why you fear the stray animals!"

In response to the bogeymen, you can get ones with horns. They don't care if you have armor, they will impale you.

Ouch, okay... I was thinking of going solo, seeing as how ambushes are MUCH nicer when you don't have companions with you (2-3 enemies instead of 20-30, easier to handle since companions don't help much in those situations anyway, except as meat-shields), and since I thought I could handle bogeys easily.

Might want to at least keep one companion with me then, just to don't tempt fate TOO much...

---

I've finally made it back to civilization, and I'm pleased to say that the journey back was uneventful (got bogeys first night only, no problems there, the only other surprise was an ambush by a couple of goblins and, later on, some wolves).

Made my way to the nearest hot-shot lord and got a new quest, now they want me to kill a titan or something, this time on a different continent altogether... There might be a land-bridge somewhere, but it's still a LONG way to go to get there.

Thinking of retiring for a while, if nothing else then just for resetting my fame, which I'd think would give me some humbler, closer quests for a while. Might get the titan first though, since that'll give me some new lands to explore after eventual retirement.

Finally made it close to the dragon that I'd been tasked to kill, trekking for ages to get there (seriously, took me like ~4hrs playtime, but that includes clearing dungeons and camps on the way).

Having a good-sized crew and feeling confident, I decided to stop and rest for the night just a short walk away from the lair.

Aaand of course I get ambushed by ~30 goblins. Ambushed while sleeping has been the death cause of most of my adventurers, so I wasn't feeling too optimistic by this point.

Sure enough, my 12 companions are dispatched pretty quickly, leaving me alone against the remaining goblins (who still numbered about 20, well-armored ones to top it all off). Thought I was a goner for sure, since no matter how well I dodge, block and counterstrike, a stray arrow always seem to get my adventurers in the back at some point, causing them to stumble just enough to loose in the end.
This time, however, proved to be the exception. I chopped off limbs right and left, leaving goblins to bleed out in my wake while I moved on.

After a while all goblins were dead, and I hadn't received a scratch!

Contemplated moving back and re-recruiting at this point, to be ready to face the dragon, but since the nearest settlement of any kind was like 3 days back, and my chances against bogeymen seemed slim, I decided to press on, thinking I'd surely die against the dragon, but that it was at least preferred to dying to childish nightmares.

I approached the lair, found the dragon, and... found out dragons are total pushovers. He didn't hit me once, and though he could take a beating, he didn't even try dodging.

So, now I just have to figure out how to get back without dying in the night... guess I'll have to test my skills against bogeys after all.

I mean, I killed a frikkin' dragon, how tough can they be?

Edit: Ha! Turns out that they, too, are total pushovers! Put up a better fight than the dragon though, one actually hit me (though couldn't penetrate my armor).

Question: Since bogeys don't use weapons, does that mean that if you have good enough armor (i.e. full iron), you're pretty much "safe" from them? Or they can still get off the occasional lucky hit?

Fanks for answering my question so far. Another one for today: I'm right in thinking adventurers can't lockpick or bash in floodgates, right? I'm designing a fortress purely for adventurer-exploration, so it's important that there are ways I can keep passages lever-openable-only.

AFAIK that's correct, floodgates cannot be opened manually as adventurer, the only way to do it is if they're linked to a lever.

At least I couldn't figure out how to open one when I visited one of my abandoned fortresses, but then again I can't say I tried all that hard since I had a perfectly bashable door leading into the same space right next to it.
