Are goblin fortresses currently in the game? I.e. so that you can slaughter them mercilessly pay them a nice visit? Or are they like the dwarf fortresses / elven retreats (are located on the map, but there isn't actually anything there)?

The reason I'm wondering is that some pesky goblins caused the destruction of my fortress, and I currently have a pretty powerful adventurer that I'd like to extract some revenge with. I've already killed the few goblins that were loitering around my old fortress, but my thirst for revenge isn't quite sated yet.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Most cinematic kills/deaths, anyone?
« on: February 06, 2013, 03:08:54 am »
The kill itself was perhaps not so cinematic, but I recently had one battle that I thought felt pretty epic.

I was clearing out a dungeon beneath a fortress. I encountered 2-3 enemies (dwarves in this instance) in every room, and me and my companions dispatched these with ease.

After a while though we entered a room with a dwarf 'chieftain' (a lasher) and a whole bunch of his cronies, of whom many were marksdwarves.
Battle commenced, I quickly got locked in combat with the chieftain while my buddies went for his minions.

The chieftain and me traded blows for what felt like forever, with neither of us being able to hit the other (apart from some bruises/scratches). All the while, bolts and arrows were flying around us, and though I couldn't see any of my companions nearby, I heard them fighting.
After a lot of turns, pretty much everything had calmed down, except for my face-off with the chieftain. At this point, I had managed to sever his right leg and left hand, but this didn't slow him down any, he still kept attacking and avoiding my attacks (seriously, in ~30 rounds of combat we had managed to score like 3 hits each). It felt really epic, the way we were dodging around pretty much the entire room, neither of us showing any signs of weakness.

In the end though, one of my companions (who had just woken up from being unconscious) managed to score a hit with a bolt in his remaining leg, distracting him and giving me an opening to move in from the side and score a hit, cutting an artery, and he bled to death shortly after.

All in all, my most epic (and in my mind, cinematic) battle so far, just a shame that I couldn't finish by decapitating him or at least something more awesome than having him bleed out.

Just trekked over half the continent since no-one wanted to give me any quests, but rather just kept directing me to a certain hot-shot lord who, apparently, doesn't seem to want to be all that close to his subjects.

Took a good while (~10-15 days) since I stopped to clean out every dungeon and bandit camp I passed, but now I'm finally here!

... and it seems he wants me to kill a dragon. On the other side of the continent. Where I just came from.

I'm actually not that concerned about the dragon (I'm guessing I should be though?) but rather surviving the trip there... I've had some bad luck when it comes to traveling (especially sleeping outdoors, nightly ambushes has killed 3 of my last 5 adventurers), but I guess I'll set off, hoping for the best.

If I do survive this, I do sincerely hope that I don't have to return to the guy to turn it in...

I had a male adventurer (with randomized name) named "Ebu Largejewels" (not 100% sure about the first-name, but it was something along those lines).

He died on his first quest though, so I guess having large "jewels" isn't enough to guarantee survival...

After making my streamline candy-colossus

Sorry if this isn't relevant to the topic, but could someone explain that? I keep hearing "candy armor" and "candy weapons."

The reason people keep saying "Candy" etc is, I think, due to risk of spoilers.

I took my crippled (motor nerves in both legs severed, unable to stand) swordsman out of retirement recently, thinking he deserved a better end then to simply wither away as a peasant.

So, I went forth, seeking out all the danger I could find, but the only thing that had happened after several fights was that he had lost a hand (making him even more crippled, but not unable to fight).
I cleaned out dungeons, lairs, camps, you name it, but he just wouldn't die. He dodged, blocked and chopped off limbs like it was nothing.

Then I decided to camp for the night.

He and his crew got ambushed, and he never even got to wake up before someone had separated the lower and upper parts of his body.

It wasn't exactly the glorious end I had imagined... I feel cheated.

Edit: For future reference, is there any way of making sure you don't get ambushed in the middle of the night, aside from sleeping in houses? If not, is there at least any way of improving your odds when it does happen?

I need to un-retire him, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this.

Just select Adventure mode from the title screen like you were playing a world without a save, and when it comes to the civilization selection screen scroll all the way down and your adventurer will be there.

Ah, there we go! Thanks a lot, missed that!

I recently retired my adventurer (first one to survive long enough to do that with some credit to his name).

With him having severed motor nerves in both legs, thus forced to a life on the ground, I've decided to let him go out in a glory blaze (or, alternatively, gory haze).

To do this though, I need to un-retire him, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this.

Any pointers?

I recently retired my adventurer (the first that has survived long enough for me to do so), due to severed motor nerves in both legs.

Now I've decided to pick him back up, and instead let him go out in a blaze of glory (or a haze of gory).

Problem is, I can't for the life of me figure out how you un-retire someone? Thought there'd be an option in the character creation screen, like there is with reclaim for fortresses, but can't find it, and googling it has been no help...

Pointers would be most appreciated!

Edit: This post ended up in the wrong thread for some reason... Thought it was strange when it went missing, at least now I know where it went...

Crutches - one is enough, but you need one usable leg (and at least one grasp); if both legs are disabled, you'll be crawling on the ground forever. When both legs are still completely present (if you lost both feet, there's nothing appropriate to stand on), you might have suffered motor nerve damage in both legs _or_ nerve damage in the lower spine.

Just for troubleshooting - the crutch is in the open inventory, not in a container, and you're trying the 's' for 'stand up' command?

Ah, probably grounded forever then. I have the crutch equipped, but can't stand up ('s' does nothing). Both legs are injured, and I have motor nerve damage (doesn't specify that it's on both legs, but I'm afraid that's the case).

Currently exploring an old fortress of mine which fell to goblins. Goblins who, apparently, are pretty bad-ass. Seriously, I stabbed one in the heart ("tearing the heart"), and he just kept on going, mauling one of my companions in the process. Thought he'd bleed to death quickly, but he didn't go down until I decapitated him several turns later...

It's slow going, made worse by the fact that they've crippled both my legs, and due to scatter I have no idea where the 20ish crutches I made in my fortress are. The fact that my companions wandered off while I took a rest isn't helping either (they're still nearby, but it's a pain to round them up...).

But it's all good fun!

Edit: Found a crutch! But I still can't stand up... Do you need two?

Do the enemies you encounter randomly (i.e. ambushes etc) grow stronger along with your "fame"? Or is it just depending on the region you're in?

The reason I'm wondering is that with every adventurer I've had (aside from a few cases of bad luck), I've managed to breeze through everything up until the point were I've finished 2 or 3 quests. Before that, I get ambushed by wolves (at most). After that, I get like 2 dwarven hammerlords accompanied by a gang of goblins (who then smack me down quite rapidly). And this wasn't that far away from the place where I repeatedly got ambushed by wolves, just a bit later in the game.

The same goes for quests, but I take that as natural since, if you are more famous, naturally people would expect you to be able to handle some bigger baddies (they're usually wrong though).

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: How have you been dying recently?
« on: January 28, 2013, 04:34:35 am »
Started up my first adventurer, recruited a hammerman and went out to do a quest.

A short distance from the starting village I happened upon a horse, which I thought I'd kill and butcher for some extra supplies.

I attacked, expecting my hammerman to help out, but it turns out he had some affections for said horse, so he started attacking me instead.
I finished him off quickly enough, chopping all his limbs off to make him pay for his betrayal, and then turned my attention once more to the horse.

At this point, having finished off a armed, full-grown man, I thought it'd be a breeze.

The horse kicked me in my face and I died. Ow.

Now I'm wondering: Has anyone made a mod yet where you can play as a horse (or similar hooved-creature, I've also noticed that camels are equally all-powerful)?
It'd be easy-mode DF then.

Just thought I'd share further events with you..

...

Ah well, guess it had to end sometime...

My fortress has fallen.

The tantrum spiral that started after the goblin siege that was miraculously fought off soon raged like a wildfire throughout the fortress.
About 30+ dwarves died from this (exact number is not known, new bodies were being found all the time), and it would have surely been my end if not interrupted prematurely by...

"A Vile Force of Darkness has Arrived!"

Pretty much the worst time for that to happen, yep. All things considered though, I guess it was a good thing, better for it to end this way than having to see my fortress destroy itself.
The military made a defiant last stand (at least that's what I'd like to say, truth is they all ran around like scared chickens as they got peppered by goblin bolts), and then the goblins were inside.
Slaughter commenced. Dead dwarves were everywhere.

Thus ends the tragic retelling of the fate of the Dwarven fortress known as GeniusCastle (never understood that name, none of them seemed to be that clever)...

...

Once more, thank you all for the advice, it was too late for this fortress it seems, but I'll do my best to make the next one better!

[Edit]:
One funny thing I noticed though, after having lost the fortress I took a look at the legends, and it seems that one of my dwarves went epic post-mortem. I'm pretty sure that this guy was dead when I quit (didn't show up in unit-list at least), but there are like 20 entries at the end of the legends where he kicks goblin ass using a copper pick-axe before bleeding to death. Awesome!

Just an update here...

Finally managed to chase the goblins that camped outside my entrance off (at least made them move off a bit), and started collecting bodies that had been caught in the crossfire etc... Nice to have some breathing room!

...

"A Vile force of Darkness has arrived!"

...

You got to be kidding me! I can't handle one siege, and now I got two at the same time?!

So, without further ado, I decided to give up. Go out in a blaze of glory. I'd had a good run with this fortress, couldn't last forever I guess.

I assembled my troops, lowered the bridge and met them head on (we're talking around 70 goblins and trolls now, versus my remaining ~12 dwarves with various experience).

Didn't think they'd last long. Surprisingly enough though, they went out and kicked ass!
Or well, a couple of them did. Some just died right away. Others went martial trance-crazy (had one guy who had 3 in a row, his kill-count from that fight alone is around 25 kills).

A squad of trolls got past the defenders though and entered the fortress, and here I thought I'd see lots of dead civilians...
Surprise again! Apparently my civilian dwarves got tired of doing nothing, so they decided to swarm the trolls and beating them to death with their fists. Lovely show! A few of them died though, but it's all worth it!

They didn't get all the invaders, but boy, a goblin on the run sure is fast!

...

Thanks for all the advice everyone, I'll make sure to try my best to be better prepared the next time, and judging by the display I just witnessed, I think I've underestimated my dwarves quite a bit!

[Edit]
Huh, seems I was a bit rash in declaring myself having survived... Still lost about 20 dwarves to the entire ordeal, and while that might not be too bad considering the circumstances, these dwarves were, apparently, related to a lot of dwarves in the fortress, so now I got a massive tantrum spiral. !Fun! !
