DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

I found out that if I want my windmill to keep working I have to keep an open space above the main body of it.  So there is a tiny hole in my dome.  Well, besides the many ramp accesses and the door in the three story building.  The building that has three windows showing....the top of the dome.  Maybe not the best view.

Also decided the trade depot has to be outside the dome and have finished making an airlock system while replacing all the other drawbridges with wall.

Once the dome is finished I could ignore anything outside the walls if I wanted.  I look forward to the day the King will arrive and I can close it up to see how long it lasts before they start eating each other.

Furfa- Furries?

If I could have Dwarfs born with claws that would be cool.  They already have enough hair.

I didn't even think that was possible in a martial trance. Did they not go berserk or something while in a trance? Maybe you started a loyalty cascade that only involved that one axedwarf? I have no idea how that happened.

I have no idea.  She never left the trance.  It said she was unhappy in her stats because of her clothing (I can't seem to make new pants and cloaks and shoes fast enough) but also she had enjoyed a good meal, her nice bed, and the slaughter of the goblins she had just butchered.  The Dwarfs seemed to ignore her, only fighting back when attacked.  It was nuts.

Well, $%^&$#!  Attacked by a bunch of goblins, while a Elf caravan was coming in.  We won but one of my AxeDwarfs stayed in a martial trance and started killing other Dwarfs!  Unarmed subjects just trying to do their jobs.  And a few dogs.  And the Captain of the GUARD!  And my cheetah!  I only had two big cats and she killed one of them!

Nobody was willing to kill her, she was still somehow a Friend so I placed her own squad in front of her aimless rampage and they killed her to defend themselves.

I lost more people to her than any one ambush!

Now I have to reassign all those rooms AND try to keep the Fortress from going into a tantrum spiral (again) and try to trade with the Elves while grieving for the big kitty.   :'(

Well, the work on the roof goes on and we have a ton of metal to melt down.  With pools of blood, gore covered items, and body parts all over the place.  All I need is to be able to place huge burning bonfires on top of the dome and even other Dwarfs may think twice about visiting the Hell which is becoming my Fortress.

My kitty!

A moment of silence...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

PS - Is there any way to stop that kind of thing?  I had to disband one of my small units, The Cavern Guard (since the caverns are blocked off anyway), to fill in the gaps in the other units.  Also decided that the City Guard is never leaving the city again.  They are good with the bows but they got their butts kicked by one AxeDwarf.

Wow...you people put a lot of thought into this...

At my Fortress, I figure if they can't outrun a snatcher, can't outfight a wolf, can't handle being hit by an arrow, and are not smart enough to keep off the ice before it melts and drowns them, then they don't deserve to be a subject.  I am still waiting for my first generation born within the Fortress to reach adulthood so I can see the results of this 'hands-free survival of the fittest' policy.

Many of them have almost reached the 12 year point.

If they have a skill, fine.  If not, well, I need haulers and recruits to fill in empty positions.

I was so busy working on my dome that when the Dwarfs started to demand fuel and other wood related products I completely failed to remember my deal with the Elves.  I think I went over the treaty agreement by chopping down 70 or so trees over the limit.  Oops.  From what I understand, please correct me if I am wrong, this seems to piss them off more then wiping out Elf caravans.   :-[

*sigh*  :(

Had some Dwarfs getting all upset and cancelling jobs because of a Forgotten Beast they somehow saw through the walls.  Had to open one of the floodgates and send in two squads into the caves to kill it.  But before I killed it I had to kill another Forgotten Beast between them and the target Forgotten Beast.  They were the weak, lame kind of Forgotten Beasts that go down in seconds.

Also another goblin attack while a human caravan came to trade.  More wounded subjects and soldiers as arrows rained down on the city proper.  Funny, the kids seem to like being placed in the hospital.  Good food, nice beds, lots of visitors.  I guess most of them are not very happy to start with and their happiness just increases with the attention.  Even some of the adult Dwarfs seem to like it.  My Surface Class, those who live on the surface, must think going to a proper underground hospital is a treat.

Lucky, while one human was hit by an arrow none were killed.

But one female Dwarf became melancholy, went cold stone sober, and died.  She lost her soldier husband in the battle and she just didn't wish to live.  Left the hospital after our staff patched her up and just slowly wandered about.  Died right in front of her two kids too in one of the storage rooms.

By the time the dome is finished my populace will be made up of scarred, hardened, but maybe happier, Dwarfs.

Kind of weird how that works.

We were attacked today by goblins and trolls.  The trolls were easy to handle, with arrows and war dogs, but the goblins fired down onto the city from the mountain to our east, killing many subjects.  Even killing one kid in the process of making a artifact!  The main hospital is full, and the Pig Hospital has at least two wounded in it also.  The horror!  The horror!

On the other hand, all but one troll was killed (the live one was captured and I plan to have its cage placed next to the cage with the bitter child snatcher).
All but one goblin was killed (the leader it seems escaped after a slight wound).  They did leave a ton of silver, iron, and copper which will be melted down and clothing which will be sold to...whoever is stupid enough to buy it.

So the Mega-project will start today.

1.  First, a wall will be built on the mountain - it will be there not to protect us from arrows, as goblins higher up on the slopes could still fire down onto us but to keep enemies off the dome!

2. Second, we will enclose the whole city in a giant dome!  Well, more of a roof.  Some of it is already enclosed to protect the workshops and the roofs of the buildings already count.  Only a few openings, for ramps, and doorways in some of the large buildings will allow soldiers to access the walls and the fortifications on them to fire down on any who dare approach us.  True, this defeats the purpose of making a Surface Class if I enclose them but most will still work outside the walls to fish, hunt, and collect wood and seeds.    I will put a few glass blocks in the dome to allow some light in.

Some statues will be up there, being on some of the buildings, so maybe I should place a roof over the roof to make a enclosed dome over the dome...hmmmm....

And I was getting bored so this will give me something to do and keep the Dwarfs busy while I wait till we can become the Capital.

Also, I figured out that the dome would be a good place to set up some war machines.   But I remember they only fire at targets on their level...which seems weird.

PS- A peasant went berserk.  She was a recruit in one of the military units - saw death and was wounded and lost her mother also.  Was wounded in the battle and throwing a tantrum in the bed in the hospital. When she was well enough to get up went nuts, killed another patient in the hospital.  The Stone Cutters, my elite force of archers, whose barracks are just across the hall stomped in and killed her in a volley of bolts before she could hurt or kill anybody else.  Half the hospital is now awash with  red blood.  The Chief Medical Dwarf was, lucky enough, unharmed and moves back and forth between the two hospitals working on the wounded.  Most should survive.
Outside of that, plus one fist fight in the jail when a planter got upset for some reason and hit a hauler (a child), it seems I have kept control of the post-battle situation.
I rarely have tantrum spirals - I am more than willing to shoot a crazy Dwarf down or lock them into their bedrooms to starve to death to save a Fortress.
I love my Dwarfs but when they start causing trouble I put them down.

Been peeking at my stock and noticed that about 90% of my meat, at this point, is either pig or dog, with some Forgotten Beast tossed in.  I have a lot of dogs and they are producing so many puppies per season the butchers are getting more raw meat from them than my small herd of pigs, sheep, goats, and birds combined!

The end result is, while we have a huge selection on the menu of prepared meals such as sheep tallow biscuits, chopped goat liver roast, and prepared wolf intestines biscuits and even such rare delights as sea nettle jellyfish stew and prepared rutherer eye stew most of the meals are dog or pig related.

And of course, for those of you prefer a more rare dish....

Well, two more things happened....one, the Duchess threw a tantrum, punching the Chief Medical Dwarf and shook a dog.  No damage was done to each but I swear, once I have a King I am wondering if killing her would cause problems.  I mean, she punched the one Dwarf who I think of as very valuable.

Also, a Forgotten Beast showed up.  With the caverns blocked off it was more amusing than anything else:

What we need is a giant bar-b-q.....

Winter comes to the Fortress.  I can't help but find the snow beautiful while the Surface Dwarfs work in the snow, hauling stone to the walls and buildings, working in the workshops under the protective roofs, and reloading the stone traps.  Isn't it lovely.

Two things today.  A five year old kid made a artifact, a war bone hammer, which sounds cool.   :)

And I closed down my old jail cells (three of them which were just 2 by 1 dirt cells with some food and a chain) and replaced them with a large common jail cell dug out next to the main staircase.  It has four beds (one in each corner), four chains, two statues and two chairs (placed so that one chair is between two different chains), with a central food stockpile.

Something like this...
B=Bed  R=Rope  C=Chair  S=Statue F=food

BRFFRB
SCFFCS
BRFFRB

The second it was finished a Dwarf was tossed into it.  A prisoner who, while not delighted to be confined and complained about the lack of a table, liked his fine bed and is enjoying the food.  True, people come in to eat and drink the food, but also a lot of people are bringing in food and drink because it is right next to the main staircase.

Also, I hope the high traffic of Dwarfs will keep him happy.  In other words, I hope he will chat with them.  He seems to like kids and there always seems to be one visiting the food stockpile at any one time.  He also seems to have a huge list of friends, so pretty much anybody entering the room is a relative, a friends, or a somebody he knows.  And his family is mostly in the Fortress.  His grandparents live in the Fortress, along with lots of uncles and aunts and so on.

He seems to be a survivor - from what I can tell he has lost two of his four kids when they were just babies (likely to Forgotten Beasts) so I assume he will make it the 60 days sentence without too much of a problem.  In other words, he will not starve or go bonkers.  From his stats he seems to be a pretty stable and even nice individual.  I feel kind of sad that he has been tossed in jail because he got blamed for something that upset the Mayor.   :'(

Oh well.   ???

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Animal breeding...

Thank you both!  I did not know about that function when viewing and it makes it a lot easier now to start culling out skinny pigs.  And even a few shinny chickens (not that skinny chickens can't lay eggs but when it is time to butcher them I want fat hens and roosters for the pots!).  Thanks again!

DF Gameplay Questions / Animal breeding...
« on: June 11, 2014, 02:14:35 pm »
I have seen how people talk about breeding animals so, for example, they get bigger pigs and such.

But while I can look at each pig and see which is fat and so on, for the life of me I can't figure out how to tell the difference between the pigs on the animal screen when it is time to butcher one.  Non-pet animals do not have names.

Can somebody explain how to pinpoint an animal to butch?  I have a herd of pigs and would really like to figure out, no matter how slowly it takes, to make sure I end up with the most effective meat industry I can for the small size of the herd.  In other words, find the slim males and females and butcher them before, I hope, they spread their spores.

Now if there was a way to figure out which bird is laying the most eggs and which is being lazy.    :P
