It was changed in version 38b, and mentioned in February's development log:

My current fortress has also always had this problem. The dwarves have made many right-handed gauntlets, but never a single left-handed one, and I have no idea why. I once posted about it here, but never found a solution and the problem still persists even now.

Hey, cool! I got a similar anvil last week, but mine's plainer and is worth slightly less.

Strangely, both anvils have the word "pregnant" in their name...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: So...out of curiousity, what happens when...
« on: December 14, 2007, 10:38:00 pm »
Well, the closest experience I've had to what you ask is when I once decided to pump water from a river towards a lava pool, to see if it would seal the creatures inside. The fire imps had been climbing out of the vent and wandering near my fortress, making work treacherous for any dwarves who needed to go outside.

At first, the exposed surface of lava began to turn to obsidian, as expected. However, being the curious type who likes to experiment, I had instructed some miners to break into the base of the lava pool from underneath (this lava actually had a bottom; it was not connected to a bottomless magma flow), which allowed the lava to leak into my huge basement, draining the pool.

The water was still pumping into the lava pool. It was spreading across the layer of obsidian that had formed across half of the pool's surface, and would then drip down onto the now half-empty pool of lava. Unfortunately, since the water was landing in the middle of a pool of lava, there was nothing to support the resulting obsidian, and constant "cave-ins" resulted, as each block of obsidian that was formed immediately crashed down to the bottom z-level.

I had a constant flood of messages telling me that a section of the cavern had collapsed. This went on for a long time, and the fact that I had to unpause it every time a drip of water fell into the lava shaft meant that I soon tired of it, and quit to reload my last save.

It was still fun to try, though.

For testing purposes, I just caged, then uncaged, then crushed around 200 animals, and I didn't notice any change in my average FPS at any point. Huh, oh well.

In case it's not just the animals, do you have lots of unpunished criminals and a locked-up Hammerer? I noticed my FPS immediately increased somewhat when I unlocked my Hammerer.

Apparently kobold thieves are SCARY.</STRONG>

The dwarves were probably so drunk they mistook it for a bowgoblin.

When you want to trap a demon inside, open both doors and when the demon's in the chamber, lock both doors.
You must have multiple chambers to be able to trap multiple demons (they don't always come inside together).

Your fortress will soon have engravings of goblins killed by demons.</STRONG>

Have you experience trapping demons this way? I would expect them to just bash down the locked doors and walk right through.

I've heard that dragons don't reproduce, and they simply... exist, since the beginning of time. In any case, I've had three dragons turn up at one fortress, but all three of them are unfortunately male.

Oh, that's interesting. When I breached the frog demon pit, though, I happened to break into it from across their pool of magma, which meant the only way for them to escape would be for them to either go through the magma... or perhaps across the surface? In any case, it seemed to slow them down a lot, in that they only seeped out very slowly in comparison to breaching the pit from another angle. I didn't notice any burns or injuries on them, but I don't think I specifically looked for any.

Okay. I just wanted to make sure. I would like to use a wide hall anyway, for a larger area of destruction, and so you can see any resulting corpses more easily since they'll be spread out more.

Just to note, my current site houses spirits of fire, so I'll be trying it out on them, if you don't mind me carrying out your idea.

Oh, by the way, I thought regular demons and frog demons were immune to magma and could swim in it, is this not the case?

This sounds yummy. I think I will go and start trying to plan this right now, then share the results. Is there any particular reason why the demons should be allowed to spread out in the wide hall, though? I agree it would seem cooler, considering it would allow for a wider chunk of rock to fall down and crush them, but am I overlooking any practical purpose for it?

I've used spikes attached to a lever to impale sneaking frog demons before, but I had to be careful not to let any demons slip through when the lever operators were away from the lever. Also, it's hard to tell whether you've got them all, unless you send someone down there to investigate. In the end though, I think I reloaded and sent my Champions down there to battle them, with temperature turned on and all. It was fun.

I tried something similar, but it didn't work so well:

Speaking of dragons, my dragon just fried a few goblins, and then... uh, died in the heat of its own fire. Was that supposed to happen?
