DF Bug Reports / Re: Units won't use Artifact Bow (38c)
« on: April 25, 2008, 07:43:00 pm »
Okay, I just tried forbidding all the 1084 regular weapons to see what would happen.

None of the non-elites are making any attempt to collect the stockpiled artifact weapons. They're all staying unarmed and milling around aimlessly when I tell them to switch to a different weapon.

However, the Champions and Elites go to collect the artifact weapons right away when told to do so.

I never thought of that before. You might be onto something there, Hague. Thanks for the idea, I'll look into it.

Well, I just did some quick testing with a few different soldiers and a few different artifact weapons, and all of the Recruits and Marksdwarves I tested only picked up regular weapons, while all of the Elite Marksdwarves and Champions I tested would go straight for the artifact weapons.

It could just be coincidence, but your theory certainly seems to be accurate so far.

Do you mean the conditions for the dwarf picking the crossbow up as a weapon, or the dwarf actually firing bolts from it in battle? Either way, I'm not really sure what conditions to describe, as I've seen soldiers in other fortresses refuse to pick up legendary artifact equipment, and I've no idea why.

Edit: I'm not sure if it matters, but the artifact crossbow the soldier used is made from adamantine.

Edit2: After re-reading the first post, I realize I should point out that the soldiers seem happy to use all the adamantine artifacts in this fortress, so I'm guessing it's not the material that's causing your problem, Hague.

Dwarves do use ranged artifacts, it seems. I've had a soldier holding a legendary artifact crossbow for a long time, and always thought he used it, but I tested it just now to make sure. He willingly fired some bolts at a bronze colossus with it.

I can confirm that my DF also crashed while I was scrolling down through my stocks screen's list of approximately 100k stones, marking each of them for dumping. I'm not sure how far down the list I was when this happened, though.

That's strange. I can confirm that all my paved roads seem to require Architecture. Lucky you.

Oh, good! I'm glad you fixed it.

I've not had the problem myself, so I wouldn't be able to help much other than finding what's been already posted about the problem before. It seems there are quite a few threads about it now.

Is it anything like the problem reported here? If so, that thread might be helpful.

There was a report of something quite similar here, where dwarves would keep bumping into each other and switching to the alternate path, though the passing-the-destination part was not mentioned.

The report is listed under bug 812, anyway:

Ah, that's what I usually do, too.

I'm guessing Toady'll see it, or has probably seen it already. I'm not sure how he treats issues of this sort, as it might be considered as more of an optimization issue than a specific bug until the cause is found, and I'm sure he has plenty to occupy him at the moment.

It's up to you, really. You could try emailing him, but I get the impression he keeps a watchful eye on the threads here, even though he doesn't always give a response.

I was thinking the same thing, that Toady would probably be more able to find out what's causing the stuttering. I'm curious to find out too, even though I've not had any stuttering lately.

By the way, nice fortress name! I'm guessing it's not randomly-generated?

Oh, and one more thing... After the first time the stuttering had stopped and I had reloaded, expecting to be able to reproduce the solution and find the truth (but couldn't), one of the dwarves eventually made a legendary artifact and named it "Truthdecays". I think he was mocking me.

No problem, I'm just disappointed I couldn't determine the cause.

I also thought at first that the antmen, snailmen and snakemen might be slowing things down, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Yes, I did kill them to see if it would have any effect, but I had to cheat a little, since I wanted to find the cause of the problem as soon as possible, really.

The stuttering continued even after they were all dead, and other times the stuttering stopped when I hadn't killed a single one of them, so they don't seem to be the cause, as far as I can tell.

I've noticed the stuttering has stopped on at least four separate occasions, each one being after a separate reload. I'm not sure what stopped it, but one time it just stopped after a while of me not doing anything, so either something I did earlier had an effect later, or the problem just fixed itself.

It seems there weren't any goblin ambushers around, but there were some goblin thieves (snatchers) and kobold thieves lurking around to the south of the fortress, in the area near the lava pool. Maybe they had something to do with the stuttering.

I tried some other things in addition to what I mentioned earlier, like uncluttering workshops, removing stockpiles, making extra stockpiles and creating an additional garbage dump to allow items marked for dumping to be chasmed. Most of these methods gave the impression of stopping the stuttering at one time or another, but I couldn't get any of these to reproduce reliably, so it was probably coincidence.

I have a feeling it was the lurkers by the lava pool, or wherever else they may have been. I tried hunting them down but couldn't usually seem to find them when I wanted to. Anyway, if you've played the fortress further in the meantime, I hope the stuttering's stopped. Let me know how it's going if you can.

Okay, just checking. I had a feeling you used Reveal almost immediately anyway, considering the places you're digging.

I tried slaughtering out as much of the wildlife as I could, digging to all the inaccessible areas I could, and killing off most of the dwarves, then reclaiming, but the stutters still kept happening.

I reloaded the original save, tried something else, and now I stopped the stuttering. Now all I have to do is go back and show myself how I stopped it.
