DF Bug Reports / Re: Hangup on Autosave
« on: December 01, 2007, 10:36:00 pm »
I've noticed that the auto-save will freeze if a saved folder already exists with the name the auto-save is trying to use.  I noticed this thanks to shameless save scumming.

Okay, maybe it isn't correct.

This isn't a bug per se.  The ponds aren't designed to refill.

It would certainly simplify building a NOT gate.

It might not even be linear!

I'd imagine that their metal statues are mostly hollow, which makes computation difficult.

Or have your refuse pile produce compost from all those body parts you leave in it.

One tile can hold an infinite amount of stuff.  Create a garbage dumping zone and have your dwarves dump everything there and then use the 'd'esignate->re'c'laim option to "unforbid" all the items in one swoop.

Or it could be a squad option which can be set from the 'm'ilitary->'v'iew squad menu.  Where the carry water and stand down orders are.  Perhaps it could be a third option in the "on duty", "stand down" setting.

When the Dwarven economy starts up you can build shops; some of which will sell crafts.  The dwarves will buy these crafts which, as far as I can tell, does generate a happy thought (He/She made a satisfying purchase lately).  They don't seem to do anything with the item beyond dumping it on the floor of their room (offices and dining rooms included) or putting it in a chest or coffer if they have one.

There should be some provision for putting a pipe through solid rock, but I'm not sure how that would work.

Hook that giant corkscrew up to a steam engine and you've got yourself a nice drill to work with.

I'd rather it let you define the room however you wanted, much like beds and the like let you do.

DF Suggestions / Re: Bridge fling should work better
« on: April 05, 2008, 10:48:00 pm »
During sieges I would set a pull lever command on repeat attached to a draw bridge which would crush and fling the goblins and trolls.  I was also pretty underwhelmed with the flinging.  It seemed like they didn't fly more than 4 or 5 tiles in somewhat random directions.  Usually they'd get flung a tile or two and get crushed by the bridge when it came back down.  That part I was quite satisfied with, but the flinging just didn't feel very fun.

Yeah.  Why not have, say, 94?  I even have ideas for names!

DF Suggestions / Re: Diagonal walls
« on: December 19, 2007, 10:08:00 pm »
quote:
I know they go straight diagonal, but it's been proven that dwarves take 1.6 (or 1.4, dont remember exactly) times as long to move diagonally than if in a straight up, down, left, or right direction.

That doesn't make moving only along the cardinal directions faster.  Moving 4 steps diagonally would be like moving 8 steps orthogonally (4 vertical, 4 horizontal).  So, if it takes 1 unit of time to step in a cardinal direction and 1.414 units of time to step in a diagonal direction, the diagonal path takes ~5.656 units of time, where the orthogonal path takes 8.  The diagonal path is faster.  After all, the shortest path between two points is a straight line (in a flat, Euclidean universe, anyway).  In Dwarf Fortress the shortest path between two points is to travel diagonally until you're in the same row or column as your destination and then travel along that row or column (barring obstacles such as walls).
