DF Gameplay Questions / Rich child
« on: November 25, 2007, 08:17:00 pm »
Somehow one of the children (who has no parents; he came as a migrant I think).  He managed to amass quite a bit of wealth and rents one of the more expensive rooms in my fortress (it rents for around 900).  I'm just wondering how the little scamp managed to amass the kind of wealth that he has (his account has a few thousand).

Designate a channel somewhere on the floor above the water.  A miner will come and dig out the floor (as well as the tile below it if it isn't already, but from the sounds of it it is.

Did you actually cut a channel down into the magma?  The furnace can't use the magma if there's a floor in the way.

how do you hide those 10 huge disks to the floor...

I always think of that first booby trap in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in the Holy Grail place.  The discs weren't serrated, but it seems to be the same principal.  Also there were only two discs in that setup if memory serves.

I would think a pressure plate activated by water could be connected to a flood gate:

code:

#####
~X^..
#####

~ is a water source
X is a flood gate
^ is a pressure plate
# is a wall
. is the hall

Now, I've never actually messed with pressure plates and water, but I would assume that you could make this work by having the pressure plate activated by a water level less than 3 (or greater than 3, whichever will open the floodgate with nothing on it).  The flood gate should open and close until the tunnel is filled up to 3/7.  It'd probably take a while to do, but it at least should be safe.

If you have the appropriate stockpiles, your dwarves will haul it all off on their own.

I know crafts and toys categories exist since I just used them.

Ahh, that would probably explain it.  Curse blindly copying things!

DF Gameplay Questions / Trade Depot interface and Ctrl+F10
« on: December 30, 2007, 07:34:00 pm »
In the new trade depot interface, the "controls" for 4 different things all appear to be ctrl+F10.  At least, that's the text that appears next to each of the options.  However, pressing that key combination doesn't do anything except change the way items are sorted.  It looks like there's other options there that I could toggle or play around with, but I don't know what keys control them, since "ctrl+F10" appears next to each.

I can provide a screenshot if necessary.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarves not eating meals
« on: November 18, 2007, 01:10:00 pm »
What's wrong is I have over 1000 meals that I can't get rid of.  I'll try running out of plump helmets and seeing what happens.

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarves not eating meals
« on: November 18, 2007, 02:56:00 am »
I have almost 1000 prepared meals, but recently all I see my dwarves eating are raw plump helmets.  There's a huge stockpile of these meals right next to the dining room.  I've only noticed this since I started playing a game from 33a in 33b.  I don't know if it's a bug or if there's something wrong with my meals, but I'll keep an eye on it tomorrow to make sure I'm not just crazy.

It means the dwarf will bring food or water to injured dwarves.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Weird brook
« on: December 20, 2007, 02:15:00 am »
How close to the edge do I have to be to qualify as near?  I was maybe one "shift+right" movement from the left edge.

Also, where is the brook draining to?  The soil surrounding the brook isn't aquifer as far as I've seen.  I've dug channels in various locations separated from the brook and they don't fill with water, so it's not like the brook is somehow draining in to the aquifer.

What do you mean by "has water"?  As in, an aquifer?  I checked all the biomes and none of them had one.  Additionally, if there's an aquifer anywhere in the area I've still had it give me warnings, even if it was only over one spot.  That also still doesn't explain why the brook's water is disappearing somewhere.
