DF General Discussion / Re: Worst waste of valuble metal?
« on: August 27, 2008, 11:46:40 am »
The worst waste is giving into the noble's demands, rather than just killing them.

Sorry to derail, but I just realized this and it is too small for it's own thread, but is related to the topic.

Back in the 2D version, the cliff-face was partly eroded. The first couple tiles were 'partially mined' due to erosion. I suggest it is re-implemented, partly for the sake of realism, partly for the sake of nostalgia.

II should think it would be most evident along river banks, lining cave rivers, and up steep cliffs.

Elephants would actually be worth bothering with then. This has my approval.

DF Suggestions / Re: [NOT_SCARY] tag
« on: August 25, 2008, 11:36:35 am »
Actually I've embarked on a 1x1 area which spawned nothing but werewolves. My peasants beat every one of them senseless as soon as they spawned on the map. No-one was ever injured (besides the invaders). Though it was only a couple seasons before I had everything/everyone sealed underground.

Perhaps instead of a [NOT_SCARY] tag, it should just check if the critter is trying to kill them or not. Playing around with Companion, looking at the hex values,  I believe I noticed that as soon as something becomes hostile/will-attack, the "civilization" value changes accordingly. Need to check that again. But I'm fairly certain the data is already there.

DF Suggestions / Re: Brewing should require water

Toady doesn't require water for Brewing currently for many reasons... One of which there is no method of procuring water in areas where there is none.

There's a reason civilization developed in river basins. If there is no water, there should be no-one trying to embark there.
If you want to try to live off rainfall, which is possible in many deserts, I suggest "Rainfall: "NONE/RARE/SPARSE/OCCASIONAL/REGULAR/HEAVY" with the wood & shrub count on the embark screen. And spend all your embark points on barrels.

This would be a great addition. Relying on gems for colored windows is a bit spendy.

In addition, change the floodgate so that a lever connected to it has 8 options, from 0 (standard) to 7 (completely open). (when (q)ueried, the lever would have the 8 options on top. It would have to become exclusive for the floodgate though.)

DF Suggestions / Re: Trap malfunction to counteract overpoweredness

Mechanical malfunctions (and I believe structure/construction failure too) as well as maintenance are already planned.

DF Suggestions / Re: Bath House
« on: August 23, 2008, 12:13:17 am »
The Romans had some really complex and wondrous public bathhouses. Even if they were technically nothing but the local pool. The Dwarves should be on this level.
This needs to be combined with the mechanics arc: piping and steam. Instead of bringing the magma under the water where it will cool and harden, clogging the pipes, it should probably be hot steam pipes under the water instead.

What other games is this comparable to?

Would water temperature be considered? No negative thought for a cold shower (To a certain degree. Good luck on a glacier), but a MUCH happier thought from a hot shower.

I was thinking a large pool that is designated as a pool by the "i" system, and set form those menus as a bath.
If you were to have a layer of magma the floor below a level of water, the water should heat up and create a sauna. There's already a simple "wet stone", "hot stone" with magma. "Hot stone" floor tiles as pool tiles make the pool a warm one?

This needs to be wayyy further up on the dev priority list.

DF Suggestions / Re: Make anvil a smelter item
« on: August 22, 2008, 06:29:09 pm »
Which came first? The chicken or the egg?

So how did the first anvil come about without an anvil? A method to obtain an anvil without an anvil would be nice.

EDIT: Nevermind.

Quick 0.02$ on this topic:

Water wheels are so easy to set up, so cheap to build, and so much more readily available that steam turbines would need to at least give 5x more power for them to be even worth bothering with.

That, or as I believe was suggested before, waterwheels give inconsistent power, while steam turbines are much more regular.
