Happy to see that you're alive! You did mention you had major surgery so that's, you know... don't be too hard on yourself for not playing a lot of DF. Your turn won't be over for another week and I'm sure everyone agrees you should have more time considering the circumstances.

El oh el, as soon as I type out something dramatic like that, I figure out exactly what is going on without even thinking. My misguided attempts at replacing stone with clay were failing, because, even though if you do the operations in specific order you can OCCASIONALLY (and I don't care to investigate this further, managed to make it happen randomly via multiple saves between operations) preserve the type of layer "stone", typically first generating something with [IS_STONE] and [SOIL] tags and then removing both tags completely eradicates that material and replaces it with a random soil. That's why it was generating random results. The mineral randomness was probably due to DF wanting to have lots of minerals to play with for generating veins.

So having discovered that, it's freaking obvious. Here's how you can completely destroy all stone that you don't want and replace it with a random soil, and that is the actual soil, not some bastardized version of it:
1. Add the [SOIL] tag to the layer stone you want to destroy before worldgen, gen and embark. Easiest done with automatic find & replace.
2. After embark, save, remove both [IS_STONE] and [SOIL] tags and reload save. Ta-da! It's gone, replaced with a random soil.

Since it turns out that does not actually nuke cluster stone and this is all getting a little bit out of hand already, I'm going to just generate a world for you where cluster stone is modded into something else, and upload it, and another file you can use to patch it to destroy stone. Uploading in a bit.

I'll just cull my previous lengthy posts so they don't ruin this thread.

Well, either way, I started working on a way to make the ores follow normal distributions while all stone is different types of clay. Currently testing, attempt 1 lead to there being no usable stone in the entire world which might be a bit too extreme.

Edit to above, repeated here for safety: Do not delete layer stone, make it DEEP_SURFACE instead to avoid creating patches of *EVERYTHING* "rock" when magma cools.

So what you're saying is... you have a map ready to go for us?  :)

Essentially. What I'm saying is I can have any kind of map that you want ready to go for you today. Tell me what biome(s) you want and what minerals you want a chance to have in the clay (this will not guarantee you will have them, but makes it a possibility), and I'll do it. It'll only cost you... a planter or a brewer. ;D

Not going to take a turn, but I finally managed to create entire mountains made out of only clay that do not flash (I briefly had flashing mountains made of EVERYTHING in the process, it was stunning). Everything that is normally stone is made out of clay, all the way down, including the caverns. The clay leaves clay boulders when mined, similar to ones that you would get with the collect clay job, that can be used for everything that clay can be used for but cannot be used to make stone items. I have no idea how this affects civilizations. Interested, or will you go with vaporstone?

I like it. Glad you weren't annoyed. However, I don't think the clay tiles underground are supposed to read Ä and ì as in your screenshots, are they?

I believe they are, actually

Okay. Regardless, in the default ASCII the tile for those is ▓ (in the Wiki) and that makes the walls look smoother. To make it look like that if you're using ASCII and it doesn't, the above should work. But if nobody minds, so much the better!

I updated the turn list so that Person, you're officially up - even though you guys were way ahead of me. :)

Didn't give me any trouble, and I have been using my own graphics pack - Grim Fortress

Wonderful madness. I'm so happy I read that. Great job and thank you for your service. Let's hope you can find peace again some day. Too bad about poor Mimosa, but that's what happens in Ghoullights. If you're not eventually going to die and become a soulless zombie, then you are one already. The laughing death-god statues (which I love) remind us of this.

The graphics pack seems to be causing trouble again. I don't know which tileset you guys want to use, so I can't personally fix it, but -
  • To revert it to default ASCII, overwrite save raws with modest mod raws. Then you can use any tileset but not any graphics pack that overwrites raws.
  • To use Ironhand, first overwrite save raws with Ironhand raws, then install Ironhand-compatible Modest Mod raws. The embark save format was Phoebus, but ditto for Phoebus if someone has reverted it to ASCII.

Modest mod link

At this point I'm thinking using modded DF may have been a mistake. The save does run overwritten with default raws, which, if my understanding is correct, leaves the worldgen and creature body part fixes intact, but removes the projectile, weapon and grazer fixes. Let me know what you think.

Okay. Sorry to poke at your thread so much, but note me as objecting to that though. On two grounds: a) a map can only spawn so many epic tales, regardless of whether you're counting the kills - killing a dragon is still going to make for a good tale and you can only do that so many times, and b) I don't see that it makes a difference that you're not tallying them up as points if you're listing achievements anyway - a score just makes them easier to compare, but they're mattering anyway and there's incentive to go for an all kill of dragons anyway :P

763
If you want epic tales and not grinding, I'd suggest removing or reducing the reward for legendary skills as that means if you spend half of your first day throwing you get 50p.

It is going to be very hard to get enough notable kills to increase your score directly or increase your fame enough to draw enough companions to matter in 10 days, so those are probably alright. I think having a reward for those does encourage people to go on side quests and exploits instead of just running directly for Bloodspire. Could add an extra reward for megabeasts and titans if you wanted to, maybe.

There is no modding of any kind. Completely vanilla DF. And I suppose you can probably get a good score this way, but it doesn't sound like very much fun just macroing until you're so bored you can't even play the game without watching TV in the background. Kind of defeats the purpose of this being a challenge and a storytelling idea.

Well, I feel a bit silly now. I suppose a scoring system just brings out the worst in some of us, and that +25p seems to completely outweigh everything else if you abuse it as it is so easy to get to legendary. Sorry. I was going to write it up as a tale of demonic possession and horrible suffering, though. Count me out either way, I just drowned under a bridge, froze to death and drowned again trying to learn to swim. Three strikes.

Strange about the elves with copper gear.

EDIT: Further testing shows that elves start with a copper spear and dagger if you allocate no combat skills, and with wooden equipment if you do.

I probably won't participate in the official succession, since I only have today and can't play DF for a while after. However, it seems fun. I'll play around with this for a bit and if I finish today, I'll do a write-up; if not then probably not. Here's the game plan:

0. You probably don't need to sleep during this entire time
1. Start as elf for highest speed
2. Learn to swim by repeatedly jumping into and out of water (probably faster to do it without ambushing)
3. Turn on ambushing, jump in river, macro throw and pick up your dagger repeatedly to become a legendary thrower and archer
4. Max out swimming, sneaking, endurance and toughness swimming under a bridge repeatedly (or maybe not if it's too slow, since no points are awarded for attributes)
5. Find a bunch of shields
6. Go wrestle, kick, punch, bite and cudgel an undead gopher or the like until you have 4-8 more legendary skills
7. Talk to somebody about surroundings until you know everything about the world
8. Finish with between 300 and 400 points

Currently I'm sitting not-so-pretty in my dress in the muddy river throwing my dagger underwater a lot, and it's looking pretty good - it's the first morning and I'm already competent at things. Will probably need to turn on the TV as this is extremely repetitive though.

The world seems to be a bit modded, as my elf started with metal equipment.
