My life sucks, I need amnesia. :(

(Bad sense of humor, up for grabs to the Dark Descent.)

Ye Olde SimLife, where you (try to) prod evolution towards creating an intelligent lifeform.

Black & White, two games I really don't personally appreciate, feature you playing a god with a big monster as your "pet" and you teach it to be a rampaging asshole or a gentle giant.

Many godgames, where the mortals are your pets pretty much - like classic Populous serie.

My husband still plays Birthright.  *snippety snip*

I bought King of Dragon Pass, but I have a basic problem with the clan mores in the game.  I'm just not a raiding and counting coup kind of person.  I know that was traditonal in many cultures, and I don't fault it, but it's not something I am comfortable role-playing.

There are fan-made patches for Birthright, have you tried playing with them? I played it mostly when it was new; I tried playing it again in a blow of nostalgy two years ago or so. Unfortunately the adventure graphics...they have not aged well at all. Old 3D is just something I can't stand anymore, I don't know why.

Regarding Dragon Pass, you can play a peaceful clan. You choose in the beginning what kind of clan you play. Matriarchal peace clan can live without any warfare at all, though you still have to defend yourself against enemies. Plus of course, stealing cattle and the like is a major source of income.

You use active skills with the s key. Brings up a menu to perform science on things.

Yes, that is what I tried. Science never came up there, only Code Breaking that my main character had. Maybe it was one-time freakout.

RoTK was one of my favorite series many many years ago. I guess I liked the same thing about it as I did with Birthright, being that tiny little kingdom/faction among many others, and working your way up.

Anyhow, I might give M&B a try again, although I would prefer a strategy game with a RPG option rather than vice versa.

Also, wouldn't a roguelike Birthright remake be uber cool?

Well, you should try King of the Dragon Pass. You essentially roleplay a whole barbarian clan in the game, including adventures of their heroes and domestic problems of their wives. :P

Okay, thank you for your reply. My current companion is actually a nurse, who runs around with a gyrojet rifle (her original weapon) killing everything. I gave her a first aid kit, but haven't noticed her ever healing me with it though. I'm pretty certain I had a companion with science earlier though and never had the option to use science skill? I had none and he had five levels or so.

Any tips on keeping my lancemates alive? I usually get one guy right at the beginning, but they tend to overwhelmed and killed regardless. :/

Is camaradie useless talent? I've heard you can have maximum of three lancemates, one from storyline and two from allies/mercs. Cavalier ViP room quest opens second slot it seems, so what is the point of taking that talent? It isn't like you could get a horde of minions anyway.

If I want to play a flier for a change, can I only get better planes from faction shops? Better than Wraith that is. I noticed Privateers at least sell a superior rocket plane.

Do lancemates use their out-of-combat skills at all? I reckno not, since... well.. at least I can't get them to use them. :/ It would be nice to have a medic etc in the group, but seems like waste of skillpoints.

I played Mount & Blade in its early days, it didn't have any kingdom running to it at that time though. How deep is that side of the game now?

Those two mods I mentioned have running your own fiefs and underlings in important role. You can set laws that affect the entire realm, including what kind of armies your vassals take to the field. There are multiple buildings and religions etc. I'm sure there are other mods with similar content, but those two are very popular and the ones I've played the most. I'll pretty much move on to Warband once both of those mods do the same . (Plus there is the excellent Last Days LOTR-mod that is being update to vanilla M&B, not Warband.) If you already have M&B, then it costs nothing to get those mods from the home forums.

Aragon was a kingdom in the middle-ages.

AragoRn is a LOTR character  ;)

Well, the game has absolutely nothing to do with the Spanish/Catalan kingdom either. :P I just thought most people will think about LOTR when seeing the name, the lacking R could have been typo after all.

Birthright! <3 Too bad the adventure graphics make my eyes bleed nowadays. Hmm, I supposed Sword of Aragon is a little similar. Despite the name, it has nothing to do with LOTR - it is AD&D strategy game from the eighties, available from abandonware sites. Umm, there is another old game Disciplines of Steel that combines strategy with classic RPG elements, though you start with just adventuring. Unfortunately it is devilishly hard and requires great patience to get anywhere. You get exp and loot really slow and have your butt kicked constantly. Mount & Blade has many good mods where you end up running a kingdom, like Prophecy of Pendor and Sword of Damocles. You know, I kind of hoped Elemental had been a game like this, too bad it wasn't.

When I played the superior-archer-types (Chosomething), I had armies with lots of bow samurai and archer monks. Enemy always rushed me in melee, even when defending, with the only exception of siege defence. So I've definitely never seen AI just sit and be peppered. Now that I'm playing Date, with mainly melee army, AI often tries to skirmish and pepper my forces instead.

That being said, Total Wars have never been known for the quality of battle AI...

Stuff that came to my mind has already been suggested, but I'll recommend Seven Kingdoms I & II (not the crap new version) and Total War series. Knights of Honor is kind of fun too. You could try some Dune games too. Though of course RTS games are heresy and you should play Alpha (Alfa?) Centauri instead. :P

edit- Oh yeah, how about Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns and Kohan II? The quite new indy title Hegemonia (or something like that) about Alexander and his daddy is this genre as well.

Open to anything really, will check those out guys, thanks.

Edit: Hmm well, just tried to install Rules of Engagement II, seems windows 7 64 bit doesn't like it, I got the pop-up about not being compatible.  Might have to try a dos shell or something, not sure really.

Take care,

You need DosBox to run oldie games. Most abandonware games have it and include instructions about how to use it. I presume DoxBox works with Win 7, I don't have Win 7 so I don't know if it does.

Also checked out I-War series, would go this route if it had the option to just be the captain and command the crew.

Take care,

If you are willing to play abandonware, check Rules of Engagement I & II. They are very old though and thus clunky UI, but you can find them from abandonware sites.
