Gerv:  Damn you, roleplay ninja.  ;P

We wouldn't want to lecture the young squire at length anyway, not today, but those are excellent quests to mix into his normal duties. We were clear that there would be trials. Those are an excellent fleshing out of the "arduous trial" remark.  :)

"Well said, and that covers the fundamentals, but there is more to a knight than that. A knight must administer the land in peace-time, and inspire his people with gentleness and husbandry of the lands as well as brute strength. If I allow you to serve as my squire, you must make effort in understanding these aspects. Master these, too, as you would a sword."

Regard him a while. "Very well. You are my squire, but do not view this as an achievement. It is the beginning of an arduous trial that you may not pass. Nor can strength and skill at arms alone carry you the full distance. Go now with my steward. He will set you to the tasks of a squire. Learning much and quickly is your first battle."

"Your birth and station are no slight in my eyes, but I must make sure that my squire can develop as a true knight. There is more to being a knight that earning renown in battle. Tell me the virtues of a true knight as you see them."

Really, I wouldn't mind meeting the players, either, if we really had time, but a private rendition in our hall. Publicly watching our exploits would be vain. If we established a connection with them, they could be useful propagandists in the future.

And for the Count, let's give him one of the best wines that we bought from abroad for this occasion when we do meet him. Our hospitality is not to be impugned. Maybe I'm hopelessly optimistic, but perhaps he has given up his quarrel... the question is have we?

I personally favour visitor - philosopher - count, but honestly it doesn't really matter.

I can think of scenarios where the order matters.

The drunkard shall keep, for alcohol is a preservative, and he is unlikely to spoil further.

I'm more interested in the philosopher, then the visitor, then lastly the Count. There is no dignity in publicly visiting a common play about oneself, but have our steward give them a generous reward for skillfully entertaining the crowd with our deeds. Also, have their names be taken, if we should need a good troupe in the future.

I let the visitor wait merely because his long trip suggests his business is important enough to keep him waiting a few more hours, yet not urgent enough to have expired during his lengthy travels. The philosopher, on the other hand, may be a bit of a prima donna in his field, as exceptional people often are.

Final candidates, then.

Vert, a pale azure, dexter, a sun in splendor or and argent, sinister, a bear rampant or, armed and langued gules.
Spoiler: Big (click to show/hide)

Party per bend azure and vert, dexter, a sun in splendor or and argent, sinister, a bear rampant or, armed and langued gules.
Spoiler: Big (click to show/hide)

I'll leave it to Mal to take the general concensus of things, as is his usual modus operandi.

The sun is usually shown that way in heraldry.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_(heraldry)

I took it off and ...

Okay, so some commentary from me. The bend makes the bear and sun small. I don't like it. I like the first, because the bear is big. The bend is just the original plus a bear, so there's that, if that's important. The last option keeps the stripe, but makes it a vertical pale, so that the bear can continue to be bigger.

Just as a general note, but that's not the original colour palette. The red was only added after the formation of Belgium, to match with the Belgian flag, as well as the Walloon flag. (Red and yellow)

Yeah, I read about that. The red does add a little interest, to be honest, but the main reason I like it is yellow and black, my favorite combo. This does remind me that the heraldry is actually wrong: I forgot the tongue and claws designation.

Party per pale vert and azure; dexter, a bear rampant or, armed and langued; sinister, a sun in splendor or and argent.

Can we keep the old one and just add the bear?

I suppose, but the blue bend will crowd the field, make the sun and bear smaller, and separate the bear from appearing to be reaching for the sun. You've still got the colours of wood and river, just one bank now, and the devices are easy to see. The silver and gold can be inverted. It's all on an SVG.

Anyway, I suppose we can have the May update, Mal. Perhaps even another roleplay for the fair? We're too broken to do training, our workers are already toiling day and night, we have plans for the fair to implement... etc. We can't add much now. Stuff our bear, rest, spend time with the family.

Promote John and Mord to Sergeants. Train a lot. Help recruit new troops.

+1 and train the troops to follow our commands, work on shouting our orders loudly and authoritatively.

And help Briggs with finding/choosing new contracts. (Does it have to be war? I feel like escorts, guarding, and other small attack contracts exist).

Nope. Briggs doesn't want us breathing down his neck about the types of contracts. He stated his intentions to take better contracts and we should give him the benefit of the doubt. I'm definitely rooting for another war, because that's the jackpot. This time, we just need to be on the winning side, or sever our contract faster, if not.

Also, let's invest in our future by buying better armour with our loot. Brigandine. And a decent helmet. And another buckler.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The first one is for ebbor. The Flemish coat of arms has really a cool colour palette, imo. The second is the serious one. The sun has got a face inside of it now, because... why not?

It would be called Party per pale vert and azure, dexter, a bear rampant or, sinister, a sun in splendor or and argent.

Good point, but robur is nice. Robur is also an oak tree. It has a several meanings, including a patently true one. Oaks grow from the earth.

Robur e Terra

Robur a terra-Strength from the earth, in latin. Makes sense, since we were but a peasant.

Awesome. Although my suggestion would have been "Unbearable."

I'm reworking the design a bit, be back soon.
