As another neutral observer, I don't expect that my voice will count for much, but I vote for the option that involves more bridges to admire.  There's already a limit of 5 years in-game, so an extension wouldn't allow for more construction time.  It would allow more time for planning, perhaps, but it would also help those who've had real life interfere with their glorious works.  Speaking purely as a neutral observer, I'm more interested the mastery of the execution rather than the speed at which it's executed.  Therefore, I think a reasonable extension should be given if it will allow more contestants to finish within the 5-year time limit.  (Unless, of course, everyone's already done, in which case I guess I'll just go admire some bridges.)

If there's room for one more, I'll take a dwarf.  Greta Silkybeard, brewer and marksdwarf, please.

Morrowind is great and all, but DF dwarves aren't dwemer and ain't got steam or electrics, and I don't think we should sully up this thread with yet another "dwarves need steam / DF won't have steam" discussion".
I guess I should have been clearer when I mentioned Yagrum Bagarn.  I certainly don't think that he fits with Dwarf Fortress, nor that DF should be made to accommodate him.  The discussion of magma-fueled, possibly weaponized, forms of locomotion for crippled/diseased dwarves merely reminded me of him.  It was intended to be as facetious as (I assume) the previous posts were.  And really, who doesn't appreciate any chair - steam-powered or not - that might involve smooth, stabbing action?

I don't know that it's magma-fueled, but given the discussion of dwarven wheelchairs, the first thing I can think of is Yagrum Bagarn (Minor Morrowind- and possibly appetite-related spoilers) and his steam-powered spider-chair.  Google even provided me with this crudely rendered sketch.  It might not be suitable for Dwarf Fortress, but one must admire the smooth stabbing action those legs would provide.

If there are still some tiny, bearded infants in need of a name, might I request a dwarf of my own? Barbanthropus if it's a boy, or Greta Silkybeard if it's a girl. A job in the textile industry might be nice, but that's a concern for the decades to come.

Lately I've been sticking with Aleflooded, but my first fortress was Applesteel the Artificial Armored Arch-Breakfast of Conquerors.

From the internets (so you know it must be true):

quote:
Not examining a gift horse is often confused with the Trojan horse, left by the Achaeans during the Trojan War. It was allowed inside the walls of Troy but was filled with enemy soldiers. The thought behind tying the gift horse phrase to the Trojan horse, is that looking in the mouth would mean one would probably get shot with an arrow.

Actually this is not the correct interpretation of the origin of the gift horse phrase. Instead the phrase most commonly associated with the Trojan horse is “Beware of Greeks bearing gifts.” The inspection of the mouth of the gift horse is more closely tied to the real practice of determining a horse’s age. Yet such a thing is rude to do when the horse is a gift--one would recommend waiting at least until one is out of sight of the person giving the gift.

I'll admit, the prospect of burly men leaping out and burning down my city is a daunting one.  But I'm not sure it's really the best analogy for the situation. The death of Laocoön seems much more fitting. After warning his fellow Trojans against accepting the horse, he hurled his spear at it. He and his two sons were promptly strangled, devoured, or otherwise done in by serpents. (Yeah, the spearing of the horse and the death-by-serpents weren't actually related, but the Trojans seemed to think so at the time.)

Anyway, I'm sure being spiteful and rude is great and all. But have you thought about... not being spiteful and rude? There are plenty of other places where we can all shout at each other until we're blue in the face, but here? Really?
