Or train them to be decent wrestlers first, and then coat them in heavy armor before going with anything that can chop off limbs.  It's how I do it =P  Haven't lost a dwarf to training yet.

I found that it's usually the same dwarf who organizes most of the parties in my fortresses.  You could simply make sure he stops being so jolly and more dead using whichever method you prefer.

I like to think that the way it is now encourages the player to get the bookkeeper and start up the economy early.  It's always easier to maintain it without many problems that way.

I think they should carry the artifact furniture around until they have a room of their own to place it in.

Heh, I only kill nobles who constantly (and I mean nonstop) make impossible demands like colored diamonds and the such.

I prefer chasming my extra dwarves instead of just drowning them.  I hate to have rooms in my fortress full of the trash they bring with them.

It's not like I don't have the materials and dwarfpower to make my own trash =P

I tend to keep my army at 20% of my population, but I do have to drown the enormous amount of immigrants I keep getting (~ 50 at times).  Everytime I get sieged two of my swordsmen stand in the entrance and massacre the crowd of goblins/trolls that feel like going inside.  It's the archers that kill my troops =[

Good to know that red wounds eventually heal.  Oh, Toady said in some other thread that neck wounds will never heal since they are considered spinal wounds.  That guy with the neck wound that keeps passing out; he won't get better even if he does rest.

I've only seen broken bones heal.  I've had a dwarf healing his mangled arm for around 4 years now =[

I'm hoping he'll eventually rejoin his squad someday.  He saved a bunch of my dwarves from death.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How do you prevent idleness?
« on: October 10, 2007, 06:10:00 pm »
Idleness is not a problem unless you play with the economy.  I prevent idleness simply by preventing my dwarves from gaining skill too fast.  My miners are also masons, my farmers help with the hauling, and my craftdwarves are always pumping out lots of trinkets, toys, and mugs to sell in the stores.  The only profession that doesn't have an average balance of 1k in credit are my mechanics, but that's only because I don't need as many traps with half of all my dwarves being in the military.  Oh, one last thing, I don't let my dwarves specialize unless absolutely necessary, but the only specialization I've had to do so far is have two cooks to feed my fortress (they just have farming duties turned off; they still haul).

After that, you just have to make sure to prevent your legendary dwarves from taking too many jobs.  They complete things far too quickly, and most of what they make turns out to be too expensive for your dwarves to buy with frequency.

Doing this won't allow you to make steel.  You need iron in both block and ore form.

You never got immigrants because your fortress suddenly became suicide post.  As in going over there is just plain suicide.

The death of your population affects immigration.  Don't expect immigrants if a large portion of your dwarves die suddenly.

Arkan has it wrong with the cooking and brewing though.  Brewing one single plant produces 5 units of alcohol, and one seed.  Brewing a stack of 4 plants produces 20 and 4 seeds.

Cooking just adds all the stacks of food used to prepare the meal into one big stack of prepared food.  It won't create more food than it took to make.   For example, if you have a stack of 5 mean, a stack of 4 turtles, and a stack of 3 plump helmets being cooked, then you will end up with a single prepared meal stack of 12.  Plants lose their seeds when they are cooked in this version, so its not suggested that you cook the plant without having processed it into something else first, or if you have a surplus of seeds (200 seeds per plant type is the maximum, all the extra seeds are lost).

Thats the part I enjoy the most about sieges, seeing the parts fly around =D

My traps are filled with at least 3 dismembering kind of weapons.  That's if I put any traps at all.  I'd rather have a standing army to protect my fortress though.  I just keep 2-3 squads per location to guard various places around the fortress all year long (rotating between seasons so they don't complain).

Well, it depends on how big your military is.  I usually end up with so many military dwarves that they wouldn't even fit all in that room.

Remember homeless dwarves will sleep in the barracks regardless of whether it has beds in it or not.

He's probably the only one fat enough to force the kobold to climb around him to get to the loot =P
