DF Announcements / Thanks Re: Dwarf Fortress 0.40.14 Released
« on: October 26, 2014, 04:17:11 pm »
This morning I rolled out of bed and went about my usual routine;
step into slippers,
turn on computer,
feed cat,
[take thyroid medicine, use the toilet etc,]
open Chrome,
check bay12forums for a new Dwarf Fortress version,
check Wikipedia news for Earth-shattering events,
read/play something while eating breakfast...
But today there was a break from the usual.

Today I danced with joy across the room to open my curtains, then sat at my computer chair staring past my monitor out the window...

The noon-day-Sun shines a lovely 60F / 16C on the temperate forests, and orderly fields of the Rhineland.
A nice breeze caresses the 200 meter hills and valleys occasionally, bringing the smell of fresh air.
The streams flow merrily along; content from the gentle rains that are common here.
In the pastures, the horses, cows and sheep munch happily, the mice roam carefully.
In the woods & thickets, the deer lay hidden, the boars ghost, the pine martens bound, and the foxes sniff.
In the trees jays screech, pigeons flutter, the blackbirds fuss, starlings work, the peckers tap, the crows caw, and the tits carouse.
On the border between field and forest, a 10 pound grey streak stalks slowly towards a grazing hare of the same size, but as the moving blur gets within 2 meters,
the rabbit senses or hears something with its tall ears, and makes a leisurely dash 10 meters away to stop and listen.
The wildcat disappears back into the forest undergrowth- the overpopulation of voles make an easier meal anyway.

A watchful eye is kept on everything by the many birds of prey that glide and perch in the sunshine.

Fruit harvesting has come.
All is right with the world.

Minor exception in rightness with the world due to overabundance of humans, and save-game incompatibility... but you can't have it all now can you.  ;)

Thanks for the rapid-fire updates; keep them coming please!  :)

Had a minotaur gore a dwarven liason in the lungs and then grab his nose and just stood there and held that nose until the guy suffocated. I personally found that stupidly awesome, but ah well.  :D
Hah! That is f'ed up.  :D

Other Games / Re: Forgot the name of this game
« on: June 24, 2014, 06:16:23 am »
A good friend who doesn't game much has tasked me with finding an old game...
called Glyph or Glyph 2 something like it...
-Egyptian theme... 2 dimensional graphics
-game play - you are at bottom of a room where enemy birds** spawned on ledges above you,
** They laid eggs and attacked or you something.
"As the level increased the birds came faster and there were harder birds."

We think this was an Apple Performa game,
though I recall a similar sounding game for the ancient Apple IIc/e giant old floppy computer with much worse graphics and birds that reminded me of buzzards.

P.S.
Anyone else remember Star Blazer for the old Apple? Insanely hard scroller, level 1 was "bomb the radar".
Ahh, playing random Apple II games my Dad, who taught computers when there were punch cards still, brought home from school
with no manual or instructions - good times. Till I wore the discs out.  :'(

My grandmother said you had to be ugly for a beard to be pretty on you.
Odd. My Grandma said something similar; "You only have a beard to hide your face." Additional comments follow alluding to what a shame it was that I hid my face.
Brainwashing rant, grumble rant rant, paleo diet, voluntaryism rant.
IT'S A KITTY!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A few years and one cat out of date, but... all I had readily available atm.  ;D

Life Advice / Re: Reducing time on the internet- your tips and tricks
« on: April 17, 2013, 09:21:20 am »
The cure for me was to actually have no internet. It sucked then I rediscovered exercise and reading.

Now I have it again. And I'm back.
Same here basically.
I could write a novel on this subject, but I'll try to be brief.

Put a fire under your arse; most of us humans live best that way.

P.S.
How old are you Mullet? Just out of curiosity, for my own scientific philosophical studies. :)

I am going to gather and eat plant matter! ;D

Then I will Paypal some hyper-inflated government war currency notes to Bay 12 sacrifice some cursed scrolls of blank paper on a Lawful alter,
so that Tarn can eat I can safely #pray to Tarn, feel much better, and feel that he is well-pleased.
Afterwards,
wish that I could go to doctor-types anywhere I am liked for treatment, (or use basic first aid myself),
and/or have a job (profession-like labors), perhaps run/own a shop somewhere a-la-Warband.
Hope someday I can cut up strips of clothing to make bandages, slings, a sheath, belt for pouches and all that good sensible stuff.

DF Modding / Re: Backpack reaction
« on: March 05, 2013, 12:40:04 pm »
Where exactly do I put this code (reaction_adventurer_basic?),
and/or how do I make use of it if I don't see it in my in-game x (craft) menu?

I'm playing Adventure Mode for the first time. Started as Outsider in vanilla/modest and the inventory made me go "hmm,
I need a mod so this makes sense; 'in reality' I could almost certainly improvise ways of carrying more than just 2 items.
clothing, vines/saplings etc. as slings, belts, packs"""""""LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLO (cat walking on keyboard, verbatim no joke; had to leave it in)
especially with all these extra animal skins, bandit clothes and coin bags..."  ;D

Any other advice on super nonsensical things I'm going to want to mod later is also appreciated.  :)
Like for example; opinions on if I should just go ahead and install one of these 3 (Edit: 4) mods now?

Genesis seems cool too?
I'm sort of a hard-mode player, focused on immersion and/or realism generally speaking,
but I don't like to feel any hint of that "cheating feeling", or going against the original intent of the game.

I also aim to play more peacefully if possible these days (recovering war game addict, swinging back into hippiedom),
so good mods related to non-destructive/domination would be interesting.
By "good" I mean not just "more crafting", or "more ability to trade", or "more talking", I mean real, comprehensive, viable game options
for having "as much fun", or "winning the game" via relatively non-aggressive methods.
