DF General Discussion / Re: Isingar: The Grass-Destroyer (long)
« on: June 18, 2008, 03:50:47 pm »
I apologize for asking, if you already mentioned it, but how tall is that thing? I was trying to count but it's difficult to tell the individual levels apart from the 3dwarf screenshots you put up. And I can't play dwarf fortress on this computer because the graphics card doesn't seem to have a decent driver for linux, so I can't just load it up and look at the save.

EDIT: Oh, it's at the beginning of your first post... Only 23 stories? Woah. That's impressive. I'd have thought at least 50 to get it to look so big.
In visualizer, I have the height to weight aspect ratio for blocks set to 3 or so.  That may be why it looks so much taller than you'd expect.

He's not, but then the way I chew through companions, it probably doesn't matter in the long run anyway.

Is it possible to replenish the bolts carried by a companion marksdwarf?  Right now he's effectively a poor hammerdwarf.

I've been killed more often in towns thanks to the bizarre and baffling merchant system than anywhere else in the game.  I give up.

Grab the head and gouge the eyes.  I did that to a giant cave spider and it was immensely satisfying.  Shouldn't a GCS have more than 2 eyes though?

Build a fortress.  Wait for a legendary armorer.  Create several sets of masterpiece steel armor.  Abandon.  Go back in adventure mode.  Suit up.

This will raise your chance of killing a GCS from 1% to 3%.  :)

I've managed to one-shot a GCS.

However, I've also been one-shotted by a large rat that got lucky and tore out my throat on the first hit.

No, you can use wrestling to grab it again.  Then try to reclaim it.  Also when the victim dies, the pike will be left on the ground.

Pray for a legendary to be elected mayor!

My mayor did the opposite: he went into a fey mood after being elected and became a legendary mason that way.

I saw someone post this compact bedroom design:
code:

=======
=  =  =
=  =  =
===X===
=  =  =
=  =  =
=======

Where the X is the stairs up and/or down.  So the only way to the bedrooms is from the stairs and then moving diagonally from there to the room.

This had to be fixed until we can get a revised trap system that lets us hook them to pressure plates, chain them, temporarily disable them, etc.

My map has over a hundred giant glass axe blades.  Each weapon trap has at least 2 of them.

Maybe you can create a vast underground reservoir for the magma and channel down into there?

The last thing I want to see is the game doing pathfinding to thousands (tens of thousands?) of stones every time a mason wants to carve a door.  That would really slow the game down.  Sometimes you just have to settle for Good Enough.   :)
