DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Most obscure legendary?
« on: February 04, 2008, 11:39:00 am »
I have a legendary tanner (strange mood in a leather shop, not a tannery).  While he's fast at tanning skins, it's not particularly useful.

I've got a legendary planter or two.  Might be more useful if my tower wasn't already overfilled with food.

I've got 1 legendary animal trainer, which is strange because I haven't trained all that many war dogs.

Crap, I needed that.

The rodents of unusual size?  I don't believe they really exist.

I'm not saying I'd want to build a summer home there, but the trees are actually quite lovely.

The problem with cave-in traps is that it's easy to collapse lower levels you didn't mean to.

Yeah, elves have been bringing me lots of wood lately, and on this map I need it.  I give them the goblin silk clothes left over from sieges.

Someone should add this to the Wiki.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dwarven emotions- over the top?

It's the strong dwarven passion that lets them create such masterful crafts and legendary fortresses.  Unfortunately, this also has its drawbacks.

I don't know that I have "requirements" as a whole.  When the new version came out, I wanted to really explore its potential.  This meant I wanted everything I came to expect from the 2D game: iron, flux, coke, magma, water, trees, sand.  I built a fortress that lacked magma and flux and wasn't happy with it.  After some searching, I ended up going with Paul's starting point, expanded east 2 spaces in order to include sand.

Now that I've got a 200+ dwarf fortress humming along, I'm up for more of a challenge.  So now I'm willing to go without some of the above "prerequisites".

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Funniest Fortress Moments

A farmer, unhappy to be wearing rotting clothes, gets drafted into the army.  This upsets him even more, so he throws a tantrum.  Not only does he start a fight, he also kills a cat.  When he calms down, he is so upset to have killed the cat, he's now miserable.  He's also sentenced to 251 days in jail for murder.  Dwarves will happily butcher a cat for food, but kill one in anger and it's actually listed on your record as murder!

Poor dwarf, still active military, gets thrown in irons.  Goes insane while locked up, and I get this hilarious "Cancels sparring in barracks: too insane" message:

I have an outside stockpile and a couple of indoor ones with airlock doors.

If the cave-in code goes back in, I know a lot of 3D fortresses will suddenly collapse.

No, it's not a matter of 49 units.  In the old version, it was specifically an unsupported area of 7x7 or more.  I mean, a long hallway could easily be more than 1x49, right?

Hmm, I'll give that a try!

Yeah, I was able to find a section of lava where I could place the center of each end on dry land, but 2 or 3 of the corners were on lava.  No dice.  Still flooded with magma.

DF Gameplay Questions / Is it possible to aqueduct over the magma?
« on: October 10, 2006, 12:32:00 pm »
Imagine my joy at my steel aqueduct over the magma finally being completed!  Imagine my horror as yet another aqueduct bug means that it instantly fills with lava, killing my metalsmith and ruining all of my hard work.

So, I guess that the problem was that the aqueduct didn't have all of its end pieces safely on dry ground.  Or is it only the center end pieces that are required to be over floor?  I haven't found a single section of magma flow that I can span with a single aqueduct and still have all end pieces over floor.

Has anyone actually been able to cross the magma with a water aqueduct?  What was required for you to do so?
