DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: March 23, 2010, 07:12:19 pm »
IDEA: a shrine/temple dedicated to the deities my dwarves worship. So far I've seen:
  • Kovest Bridgejade the Silver of Merchants, appearing as a male dwarf, associated with trade and wealth
  • Aban, appearing as a male dwarf, associated with rebirth, creation, crafts, metals, minerals and jewels
  • Zenon, appearing as a male dwarf, associated with hunting
  • Enshal the Simple Swamps, appearing as a male dwarf, associated with plants, animals and silence
  • Rithzam, appearing as a male dwarf, associated with mountains and fortresses
  • Zuglar the Moistness of submerging, appearing as a female dwarf, associated with water
  • Angzak, appearing as a male dwarf, associated with lies and trickery
  • Amug, appearing as a female dwarf, associated with travelers and dreams.

Each temple will be decorated according to their spheres. If that is hard or imposible, it's based on the names. I've given it a bit of thought, and already have gotten some ideas for some temples:
  • Kovest's one will have a precious metal floor, and heaps of forbidden coins, most likely both will be made of silver;
  • Aban's will have all artefact crafts and jewellery strewn about;
  • Enshal's is going to contain the biggest animals I can find on chain;
  • Zuglar's will hold a pond, a fountain and a pool.

As for Zenon, Rithzam, Angzak and Amug their temples, I have no idea yet. A quick glance at the language file reveals that their names respectively mean: Viper, Bulwark, Terror and Fog. Maybe I'll give Zenon a crossbow and a corpse or two and Amug a waterfall (which provides 'fog'). But for the other two I have no idea. Yours are always welcome!

I don't hate my dwarves. I love them. Each single one of them. I love them to death.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How do you win Dwarf fortress?
« on: March 23, 2010, 11:51:14 am »
Look at it this way: what happens when you loose? The fortress ends. So logically, when your your fortress hasn't ended, you haven't lost. And in a game where there's only a loose-condition, the win-condition is not meeting the loose-condition. So, as long as you have a fortress up and running, you're winning!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Mass Claim?
« on: March 22, 2010, 05:23:37 pm »
Another useful feature, is the [o]rders menu. from there you can do all sorts of nifty things, such as [F]orbid certain items upon the death of it's owner. This will remove the need of mass-claiming goblinite after a siege. I suggest looking around the orders menu (and any other menu as well, actually) to learn a bit more what it all does.

And to make them happy, take some preventive measures. The easiest way to make them happy is by having a large, engraved dining hall. Add some statues, nice furniture, some artefacts and as few friends as possible, and the chances of a tantrum spiral are lower. The dining hall and furniture add happy thoughts, while the lack of friends decrease unhappy thoughts from losing friends to tragedy. If the fort is relatively young (with very few masterpieces per dwarf), it might also be a good idea to put masterpieces somewhere safe. When a masterpiece is destroyed (by a tantruming dwarf, perhaps), the maker gets a bad thought equal to 1000/(number of masterpieces). In comparison, eating a legendary meal or drinking a legendary drink is a good thought of twenty. So unless you have a multitude of masterpieces, they're better of safe in a vault or something.

That notion is false, I believe. You could make a custom workshop to create metal mechanisms, and even have it use the mechanics skill. They would be quality-less, but that doesn't matter unless you're using weapon traps, in which case, why are you using weapon traps? Wimp.  ;)
In the current version you can have metal mechanisms, made in the forge, with qualitiy modifiers, so I'm not so sure I believe you. The only metal mechanism in vanilla is bright blue and rather valuable, but modders have allowed for others.
I thought the "bright blue" mechanisms were made from raw adamantine rock, and so were "rock" not metal. Just like making one out of Native Gold doesn't make it metal. It's still rock.
Have a look at the raws. Adamantine will have the tag [ANY_USE] this will allow it to be used for, well, anything. Furniture, weapons, armour, clothes and even mechanisms. So if you add that tag to iron or steel, you'll also be able to make iron or steel mechanisms. And clothes, but that's just a minor 'inconvenience'.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: i have about 100000 stone i need to
« on: March 22, 2010, 01:54:17 pm »
May I suggest atom smashing instead. Changing the boiling point of the stone(s) you want gone, will not only make the stones disappear, but also every single item made from that type of stone. And I mean everything: chairs, tables, amulets, idols, mechanisms, workshops, blocks, everything made from that stone will disappear. Actually, I'm not sure about built items and workshops. Could someone verify, please? Atom smashing will only dispose of the useless rock. And if you still want to do it, change the [MELTING_POINT:*] or [BOILING_POINT:*] tag (or add it if it isn't there) to 10000. This is 0° C, or the melting point of water. As long as they're not outside in a freezing temperature (easily identified by frozen water) they should melt/boil instantly.

Success! I was unable to capture the remaining elephants, but I was lucky enough to have a pregnant elephant, as I recently discovered. She just gave birth to three calves. One female and two male, which more than satisfies my needs of wanting a male. I'm going to go ahead and put every female and one male elephant on a leash, and the same for my stegosauruses. It's going to be awesome!

I'm starting to like these elves. They brought me a velociraptor. And I'm preparing the noble rooms. So far, I've got the mayor's, dungeon master's and hammerer's rooms up, except for all of the tombs. As we speak, the dwarves are clearing away all excess rock from those rooms, and I'm starting on the baron's, baron consort's and tax collector's rooms.

Hunting down elephants. Hunting down, as in luring them into the cage traps. So I can have war elephants and war stegosauruses accompanying my army. Yes, you read that right war elephants and war stegosauruses. But it's not as easy as it sounds. The stegosauruses just wandered into the traps out of their own accord, but I need to herd the elephants into the traps. At the moment, I'm using two recruits risking their lives to capture the enormous beasts. While typing, I've succeeded in capturing a female. I hope she's pregnant, and will soon give birth to a male. But to be sure, I'll try and capture the three remaining elephants roaming the map. Because WAR ELEPHANTS!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: My noble likes what now?
« on: March 21, 2010, 08:16:13 am »
This isn't from my noble, but pretty funny nontheless:
My miner likes 'Ettins for their arguing heads'
In that case, I shall have to kill you.
Shall I?
Oh, I don't think so.
Well, what do I think?
I think kill him.
Well let's be nice to him.
Oh shut up.
Perhaps-
And you.
Oh quick get the sword out I want to cut his head off!
Oh, cut your own head off!
Yes, do us all a favour!
What?
Yapping on all the time.
You're lucky.  You're not next to him.
What do you mean?
You snore.
Oh I don't -- anyway, you've got bad breath.
Well its only because you don't brush my teeth.
Oh stop bitching and let's go have tea.
All right, all right, all right.  We'll kill him first and then have tea and biscuits.
Yes.
Oh, but not biscuits.
All right, all right, not biscuits, but lets kill him anyway.
Right!
He buggered off.
So he has, he's scarpered.

Uh, UristMcdungeonmaster, you should start running if you see the werewolf howl...
Yay for synaesthesia!
