DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: The peak coffin problem
« on: March 29, 2013, 08:55:21 am »
That's completely excessive though. Only nobles request tombs, and you can share them if you need to. The baron and the monarch are the only ones you should even worry about because they can perpetual tantrum if a peasant has a tomb of same rating as theirs. My crypts are a line of coffins bearing all the normal dwarves. And I've never had to really worry about it.

a better question is how did you get a magma-proof pump-stack running that early... my forts are usually defense-sufficient before i even start metalworking of any kind.
He didn't.

Simple option. During worldgen change the mineral frequency from sparse to everywhere. Problem solved. Flux will not read on the maps for the worldgen, but DF prospect will point it out if you really want flux. With high mineral frequencies I don't care about where I am, river, aquifer or if there are many/any trees. Though wooded areas are nice.

Sarvesh is legendary +5 but should be more like legendary +20 for slaughtering 1500 enemies by himself. I actually lock him in between an airlock and let him rip the goblins to shreds. When the elves come he seems to be able to slaughter them fast enough that the elvish archers don't shoot many rounds and get bogged down in melee with their terrible weapons. Wearing maximum iron and steel armor and like five shields he is invincible for all intents and purposes. He did die in battle once for some strange reason, but df overloaded anyways, I never got to see what happened actually.

I've been tinkering with 10000 year worlds. One went to the second goblin era and the other dipped into twilight around year 800, but nothing amazing or interesting. Found a vamp with 48000 kills and a few dwarves with 1500+ but the issue of war, I want war with all civs WITH vamps and necros for my next play. Since because the world does not advance or change, I've locked myself into an endless war with the elves. How I wish the world went on after embarking.

4 animals, butchered the rest. Job list is empty 36 dwarves partying endlessly, 1 legendary guy in the military kills all invaders. Autodump and smashed all the useless junk out of existence, 10000+ items gone and yes FPS did increase some, but FPS is still way beneath cap. At least I can tell when invaders spawn because FPS dips even lower. My fort is tiny. I already hit artifact cap because of revealed tiles, after 7 or so artifacts. So that means my revealed tiles are about 10,000 total and I have the majority of that walled off because I didn't use it anymore, empty garbage, just a map wide clear out of the entire area around the stairwell.

With 2500+ enemies in the kill list and few items on the map, I wonder if something else is bogging down fps? Could that fact that my forty dwarves living here for 30 years be a problem? They have almost no tasks aside from make booze from time to time. I got 6000 drinks and 8000 meals right now, so they party all day and idle the rest of the time.

Pop cap is 40. embark is 2x2, haven't hit caverns. dug 6 levels down is all. No workshops active. Dwarven atom smasher gets all the junk. No temp, no weather, g-fps is 15 btw.

As someone familiar with bugs and such, not all bugs may be obvious with the raws and they may go unnoticed or undetected for several turns and only becomes game breaking later on like during a necro siege.

FPS has dropped by 1/6th from my original. Despite cleaning everything, mass dumping and atom smashing it out of existence, no change in population and wiping out all enemies and their gear, I have been unable to restore the FPS. For reasons beyond my control, I'm beginning to worry about reaching year 100 with the fort. If not any fort, simply because the sheer number of enemies and stuff in memory cannot and will not be cleared out despite smashing them out of existence. Memory usage and pathing is not a major concern, but something is going on behind the scenes which I cannot figure out yet.

Minor note though. Sarvesh is EPIC. He now has over 1500 kills to his name. I wonder if I will be able to find out what is going on with this FPS loss despite running a clean and small fort. I've even sealed off unused areas, still FPS continues to fall...

Update: Year 20 now. Resorted to mass item removal and cleaning to get rid of the thousands and thousands of useless items to restore FPS. Blood splatter DOES hurt FPS. No one should dispute this if they have a significant amount of blood splatter. Dfhack cleaned 4517 contaminants from 2538 items and this is after I let everyone idle out after they did their cleaning jobs already. Removing those 4500 useless splatters and pools of blood allowed me to restore 20% of my FPS and bring it back up to my cap.

I have 1349 creatures in my dead/missing pile, a lot of stray animals slaughtered in the ambushes and a few dwarves, 4. I think. Sarvesh 'Elf-bane' is now 18 years old. Sarvesh is 'strapped with massive amounts of muscle and lard' and his sideburns are now very long. He's grown quite a bit in these six years and now has a kill count of 256, with 196 being 'notable', and the other sixty consisting of elvish war beasts like unicorns, bobcats and cougars. The goblins have been getting away because Sarvesh's post is at the borderline of the bridge, his new post will be close to the deepest part of the fortress so we can lock the invaders in and slaughter them all.

Still no sign of that short, fat, ugly elf princess that was spotted in the first elf attacks. The fact the elves have been making biannual attacks instead of yearly attacks, and their numbers rank 100+ every time should eventually draw the royalty back to the battlefield to curb such losses. Then the trap bridge will close and I'll capture elvish royalty for some proper 'payback'. Sarvesh lost his older brother to them.  He died of his injuries, starvation and dehydration not helping, he is buried in a special blue coffin in the crypt. The elvish war continues on though.

I got the makings of an EPIC here.

Sarvesh Rilemerith Zirilurem Rimtar or in English Sarvesh Youthful-labors the Fiery Father of Castles is the budding hero of Kurikinod. He is twelve years old, born on the 23rd of Felsite in year 2. He arrived in Kurikinod on the 19th of Limestone in Year 4. The last of the migrants. He comes from a family of farmers, but loves fighting and took joy in the slaughter of his enemies. His father is the fishery worker, Dumed Zuntirlesast and his mother is Asob Usanstukos is a farmer. His older brother is Rakust Ilunuzol also a farmer. Sarvesh has been watching our military from the meeting area for ten years. He appears to be a natural at combat. Single handedly taking down a 19 goblins in an ambush, and rescuing the fortress and avenging the death of Stakud Zuglarnazom our metalsmith who was cut down fetching melt-able goblinite when the ambush began in the corridors. With a flick of the switch the bridge went up and sealed the goblin ambushers in the fortress to prevent their escape. Sarvesh's brutal massacre which followed seems to be just a glimpse of what he could do. I wonder how good he will be when he is fully trained and desensitized to the gore upon which he inflicts.

Minor note, he slaughtered 10 more goblins in an ambush and has grown attached to his iron shield which he inflicts many cruel and unnecessary injuries upon the goblins, literally bashing them to death and breaking their fingers and legs with the shield before striking the final blow. I must train and nurture such awesomeness! Sarvesh shall slaughter the elves in due time.

Easier idea. Make a separate room for them and use glass as a natural barrier, much in the same way that the necromancer reanimating training room allows the necro to see the bodies but not be attackable.

Ha ha... >.> I never once got the necromancers. Despite waiting for 10 in game years for them, perhaps I need to wait until 100+ years in before starting or figure out a way to keep the fort interesting for that long? Masterwork is initially interesting, even if does have bad FPS when you have all the options. Sieges weren't too frequent either for me. But Jotuns showed up and burned half my map with their fires. Was cool, lost two of my best dwarves in the process.

The whole 'beat the game comment' may have been a bit rude in hindsight, but i just wish i had the dedication of some of the other players here. More and more I find myself genning worlds for their legends alone. I'm going to do one last mega fort to test somethings out. I'll post logs of it or something if it turns out epic. I'll go long enough that my starter dwarves should/will die of old age if they aren't felled by the beasts. Maybe I'll get 100+ creatures in sieges. I want it epic. Ultra epic even.

Doing masterwork mod now. I kept regenning and I haven't found a reanimating terrifying biome in the old one, but I did produce a monster of a pocket region for adventure mode that has some 20000ish titans, megabeasts and such spread out over a 1000 of each cave type or whatever the game would allow. While affecting nothing in Dwarf Fortress mode, adventure mode could be summed up as this, my last lair had 4 dragons, 3 cyclops, 4 bronze colossi and proceeded to come straight for me. Minotaurs in labyrinths cluster in 8-9 groups, I lose to them often enough because they rip me apart. The bronze colossus I couldn't kill or outrun unless I got swept into the river. Not sure if I am ready for adventure mode fun... though I did get 500+ kills on the near helpless humans, but seeing them respawn endlessly when you move off screen far enough did get old after awhile. I thought I could eliminate the populace and keep them gone except for babys. And oh yeah. Last thing, even modding my dwarf, 20000 mega beasts becomes 30,000 quickly due to the birthing and such. Funniest name for a male minotaur child was 'Galka the Rapid Climax' born in the 1st year (started year 2 for adventurer), I just started laughing because I played a Galka in FFXI.

Forbidden AND tightly closed. I don't know if the thieves some how took control of it when they got skewered by spikes and maybe lived a hit after unconscious or something, but its happened twice now. Yay for fun bugs. My genned world has a LOT of beasts in it. Thousands of them, its a pocket world, yet I've only seen one show up so far on this save. I think I might try the masterwork mod.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Workshop entrance, Trap or Door?
« on: March 14, 2013, 10:17:53 pm »
Simple answer is that the door or wall is best. Weapon traps are double edged yes, I'd avoid them for the friendly fire reason alone. And you can just forbid the door and let him die. I've only had a few crazies, not enough to make sense blocking all my workshops up, but just make sure you have livestock or fresh kills on hand for those crazy bone requirements.

Your entrance sounds elaborate, yes, but its not the most efficient. As for the walled in area, I do that to when I NEED to have access to materials. But I find the caravans are great for everything, especially since I slaughter all the the dwarven ones.

Got 7 (scratch that.. 8) artifacts now, one named shield which killed a titan. For some reason my trap room keeps getting opened by dwarfs who bypass the forbidden door. And I absolutely cannot get a war started. I've massacred the elves, the humans stopped showing up after a few slaughters, should they still be in the civilization list or did I actually help wipe them off the face of the world? Might have to check. FPS is at 220 solid still, I had to seal off a few areas to keep the FPS up.  Not sure why either. This fort may last another 10-20 in game years.
