fortified walkways are much more expensive than digging underground pathways

i was trying to execute some prisoners when i realized i forgot to close off their escape route.

one of them ran into my dragon chamber and got instantly obliterated, along with the chain holding the dragon.

the war dragon then proceeded to help by blowing dragonfire onto the prisoners... in my main hallway

i had this idea of creating foxholes connected to underground passages with a retracting bridge over them,

when goblins get close, they get pelted with sweet dwarven hail. still under construction though.

another caravan, another ambush. a lasher squad got stuck out of turret range when their leader got stuck in a cage trap.

really wish i had those foxholes.

idk, i had the LNP with the fix (one of the reasons i got the LNP) for the growth bug.

my war dogs still get curbstomped by goblins though, with random bruises every once in a while.

there was an ambush during the winter months. three squads showed up, two with ranged leaders and one completely ranged.

my dwarves were still hauling the goblin snatchers that arrive moments before (10 bucks says the goblins pay them as distractions)

luckily, only one mechanic died, though the same cannot be said about my war dogs. nearly all of them gave their lives to protect the marksdwarves behind them, whom easily took care of most of the goblins. hilariously, they actually ran out of bolts and tried to bash them with their crossbows, though at that point, all remaining invaders were unconscious anyway. i should probably equip them with copper crossbows.

i modded the GCS to be trainable and breedable. so far i have 10 of them. i think i might replace my war dogs with them soon.

+ i accidentally killed that FB when a marksdwarf shot it in the brain. shame really, i still don't know what that blood does.

welp, my plans for the deadly blood earthworm failed miserably.

i managed to pit the beast in a 1 by 1 space on a spear trap with fortifications around it.

the problem is that i used a silver spear instead of say, a menacing iron spike. the attacks keep glancing away, which means no blood.

on the bright side, this is the first time i ever dealt with pitting, and i see lot of potential in that.

i think i have an idea for this thing. i'm going to put it on a retracting spike tile with fortifications around it. that way its blood will spill onto the floor around it and poison any prisoners near it.

EDIT: operation FB abuse failed. retracting spike failed to injure.

abandoned project and locked thread.

i just caught a flying earthworm with deadly blood using GCS traps.

before catching it, it was shot in the right wing by a marksdwarf.

it leaked ichor when it was shot, so i'm not sure if deadly blood has any effect. i'm not sure if it can fly either, since its wing was cut open.

suggestions?

i'm beginning to question the competence of goblin generals.

they brought a squad of bowmen on CAVE SWALLOWS with a DEMON leading them also on a CAVE SWALLOW.

if they used those guys to attack, they could have easily caused some massive damage, maybe even destroy my fort.

instead, they send a squad of swordsmen first, getting them massacred in the process, while the bowmen just stop for no apparent reason. and then they left.

goblin siege came with Mounts this time. 2 squads. one crossbow squad and one macemen squad. very fun and very interesting. there were cave crocs, elk birds and CAVE SWALLOWS. really dangerous because they could fly over my defenses and kill my dwarves. a few even had marksmen on them.

step one, put my marksdwarves within my walls. this way they can only target flying enemies. shot off most of the cave swallows. luckily, i set my marksdwarves right next to my pig farm. most of the goblin that could attack went for the pigs instead. i think a woodworker got injured.

step two, unleash hell on everything else. sent my marksdwarves on the walls so they can shoot through the fortifications. for some reason the other squad of macemen stopped advancing. they could have helped. they had an axe lord for their squad leader on a cave swallow. lots of death. i think the highlight was a goblin swordmaster, who was able to dodge bolts for a whole page before dying.

this fort has been lots of fun already.

if you've ever fought a bull in real life, you'll know they aren't to be fucked with.

try to avoid bigger animals until you're experienced.

can deadly dust or vapors go through raised drwabridges? i had a similiar idea but instead of cave in i just trapped it in a small room.
