DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had
« on: April 30, 2013, 08:27:24 pm »
i had an accomplished sworddwarf in a danger room with his squadmates. he's the only one that not an elite. instead of training his sword up to great, i got his shield skills up to legendary.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: disposal of caged undead?
« on: April 30, 2013, 08:24:58 pm »
Instead of mass-pitting, try building one cage and assigning everything you can to that cage.
Make sure there are some extra cage traps near it, just in case an undead goblin breaks free at the last second.

adding on to that, build some fortifications between you and the zombies, then execute them via firing squad.

DF Suggestions / levers that link onto other levers
« on: April 29, 2013, 10:31:58 pm »
sounds kind of redundant, but pretty useful for like a master switch for all your bridges when you already have levers set up.

or when you have existing levers but you put them in a disadvantageous position and doesn't want to reconnect all the mechanisms again, so you build a new lever and just link it to the old lever.

not sure if it'll be hard to implement, but i'm guessing it's not a big deal.

i had a roc fly past my entire fortress just to land on a cage trap on the other end of my fort.

their path finding is weird

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: problems with marksmen

one of my main problems with traps is that the goblins have way too many meat shields and often the elite marksmen makes out unscathed. i'm going to invest in more traps

i once had a forgotten beast made of melanite with toxic fumes that causes numbness and I'm assuming necrosis. basically on his way to my fortress, he killed like 5 of my dwarves, two of them children before having an epic showdown with a child. this child managed to survive a full MONTH with that bastard, because the beast only thought to choke his throat. the syndrome didn't even affect it. i didn't see any of the necrosis kick in.

when i sent my military down there to kill it, FOUR of my guys got necrosis. life's just not fair.

then i save scummed and got a fleshy crocodile that can shoot webs. (shot to death by marksdwarves).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: April 27, 2013, 02:48:40 pm »
had goblin christmas show up in the form of 3 waves of trolls and many, many lashers. seeing how they're all melee, and i've got my wall set up, they've got no chance.

just my luck too, all my dwarves are inside. no wandering deathseekers either.

all the invaders were easy prey for my elite marksdwarf squad. one of them took joy in slaughter and is no longer unhappy. win win for me.

the only problem is that markdwarves don't get a lot of presents. my marksdwarves are way too good at inflicting psychological warfare. they're behind fortifications, so i imagine goblins seeing their comrades get shot from nowhere. most of them fled like cowards after seeing two or three of their comrades die. even their elites were like wetting themselves, they ran the farthest.

all my markdwarves are elites now, except this one guy who i assume can't shoot (his fingers got chopped off or something). i think i'll replace him with someone who can.

i would off him in a way most dignified to a man of his status: magma trap in his tomb.

if you want to keep him, i suggest surrounding him with children

adding on, i think the best weapon traps involve blunt damage. like hammers maces and spiked balls so they cannot reanimate

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: problems with marksmen

i don't think enemy archers can fight back against my fortifications. non accomplished archers can't shoot through fortfications unless they're one tile next to it, which is always true for my marksdwarves due to the design.

enemy elites can shoot from trenches and even with all the dodging i think they can still get a few shots off (which is not pleasant)

i'm also think about attack orders. if i move my markdwarves away from the fortications and then order them to kill the elite, will they get distracted by the other invaders?

DF Gameplay Questions / problems with marksmen
« on: April 26, 2013, 03:46:55 pm »
these are by far the most dangerous enemies you'll face. simply because of their ranged ability.

i have a group of (mostly elite) marksdwarves to fight at equal footing with them. i have a wall to protect my dwarves from arrows, and fortifications to protect my crossbowmen from unskilled marksmen.

Layout:  F                                     F: fortification W: Wall
              W

my main problem is with elite marksdwarves. they can shoot past my fortifications and hit my dwarves. is there any defense design to stop them?

DF General Discussion / i wonder what the mountainhomes are doing
« on: April 25, 2013, 04:10:23 pm »
my theory is that it's kind of like Valhalla up there.

Each day in the fortress of Splendid Roc, i reminiscent fondly about my times in the mountainhomes. i worked as a lowly adviser to duke peachbottom, whom in turn addressed the king. there was a lot of paperwork, occasionally fighting, but life went on as normal. break time was the best time. all dwarves strive for two: to be a great warrior, or a great blacksmith. Some say a legendary brewer is their dream, but us advisers scoffed at the idea. too mundane for the likes of us. even worse than paperwork i'd say.

anyways at breaktime, most of us would practice fighting. the guards would often lend us their weapons. and we would practice. we were good friends with the guards.they lend us their weapons, and we would persuade the duke to give them a little bonus, usually in the form of drinks or coin. peachbottom understands. "they work so hard to keep the peace" she'd say.

ironically it was not others who claimed us, but our own poor planning. the mountainhomes were never good for planting, and the few fields we have, though often low in yield, was sufficient to make all we need. recently there was a population boom, a vast amount of babies born. we mountain dwarves believe alcohol makes strong dwarves, and no right minded dwarf would call himself a dwarf unless he could back it up at the tavern. we fed our babies booze to make them strong. some say it's better than milk.

Peachbottom decreeed that a small group of citizens would settle in a more fertile country, where fields were plentiful for booze making. an exhibition group was to build a hamlet, where within a year or two more dwarves from the mountain homes would settle there.

this is where we are. the Splendid Roc. it is the first year. 6 months have passed. winter has arrived. and i am your leader.

i suggest you wall off the river, make it completely impossible to pass without the bridge

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: worst dwarf award

And being very stupid doesn't make a dwarf 'worst', it makes them maximum dwarfy.

OK. what is your definition for worst dwarf then?

DF Suggestions / Re: UI still horrible ? off for another year
« on: April 23, 2013, 03:58:09 pm »
no mouse support sucks, but it doesn't kill the game either.

if you played the game for a reasonable amount of time (few months) you'll be so used to the controls that changing it feels foreign
