No installation required, linux is not windows ;D

Simply download DF for linux, extract it somewhere and play.
You can launch DF normally or from the terminal. ;)

I'm pretty new to Linux.  It is a 64-bit installation (amd64).  I created a Games directory in the Home folder, and then created a Dwarf Fortress folder in there, copied the install file and extracted it into the folder.  What I got was this:

I couldn't find anything that looks like a script or executable there so I did a little searching through the folders and found this one:

Dwarf_Fortress looks like the executable, because the right-click context menu has a 'Run' option, however when I double click that file or select run nothing happens.  No error message, nothing.  It's really very frustrating.

Running from the terminal is the normal way. ;)

If your Linux installation is 64-bit (amd64), then you need to install the 32-bit versions of certain libraries for Dwarf Fortress (which is a 32-bit executable).  See Installation#Linux for details.

Yes, my Linux installation is 64-bit.  I'll be trying the DF installation now, and let you know how it goes.

Hi there I'm hoping that someone more experienced can help me here.  I am running Ubuntu 14.04 and I am new to Linux and I would like to install DF but I don't know how.  Can you explain how to install DF or point me toward where I can get help.

Thank you!

Back as a Bay Watcher, and sticking with these forums for the long haul.  I really enjoy the sense of community that exists within these forums ;)

What sets Ankhet apart for me is the potential for intrigue amongst the dominions and the pvp amongst individual players.  When I joined about a year and a half ago it was right in the middle of a major dominion war and it was a wasteland; a warzone, everyone was affected by the fallout from the war between these two major dominions.  The game, as it exists now, has the potential for something great.  I miss the days of heightened activity though, and desperately wish that there were more players who can pick up on the scale of what is possible given the mechanics that the game allows, but there has been a lack of activity lately and new sign-ups are at a low point.  The game, as it is, will sink or swim on  its own.

I also like the players.  As I mentioned before, I have met some of the most interesting people I have ever met through Ankhet.  It changed my life.  Time will tell whether it succeeds or not.

I'll be around here, as I said, for the long haul.  This, too, is an amazing community that dazzles me when I read through the forums.  I wasn't sure where to begin, but this forum is very active and I look forward to contributing however I can.

I like the style of game, but why is always about fighting alien invaders?

I have been playing XCOM:EU since I picked a copy up on sale and I must say one thing: it produces such an aura of xenophobia I am sure that, if we ever are attacked/contacted by an alien species we will react with violence.  Strange thing to put in a thread here, I know, but I wish that there were more games where we practiced diplomacy rather than responding with wanton aggression (imho).

Whatever happened to this game anyway?

This does look interesting.  I'll give it a try as well.

If you like SF I agree with the above poster - go EVE.

Fell into a pit - first one - in Grimrock.  Reminds me of my childhood here ;)

Other Games / Re: Best/Favorite Paradox Game?
« on: March 16, 2013, 06:15:17 pm »
I have quite a few games both developed and published by Paradox and I have spent the most time by far on both SOTS I and CKII.  Two very different games (one being space 4X and developed by Kerberos, and the other being grand strategy developed by Paradox).  I recommend both of them.

This is the next strategy game that I will be playing, and after becoming fairly acquainted with CKII I am looking forward to it immensely.  To aid myself, and others, and so that I don't blunder through it, I will be using this written lp to get me started.

Hope it helps:

I would love the opportunity to post questions/updates in this thread as well.  I really enjoy paradox games ;)

I, too, love the look of this game, and with space 4X being my favorite genre of games I will be following this eagerly.

I was less trying to advertise than I was trying to contribute... I am a player not a dev.  But I understand.  I wish there was a way to delete my post than, so that I could post it later as an established forum member, so that the thread at least gets some attention.  I hope it doesn't suffer because of my ineptitude lol ;)

Other Games / Ankhet - an innovative role-playing game

An ancient priestess regards you for a moment with weary eyes. "Once we were many... Now, the servants of Amin have been defeated and the shadow of the Apep looms upon us. Where once one could scarcely count the Dominions, now there is but one. We are the last. But know this! Those gods who have survived the serpent’s treachery are with us. They beckon us to take up arms and stand against the darkness. It will not be easy. It will require both courage and cunning. But no matter, for now is the time! Beyond the walls of this Final Dominion awaits a world in dire need of heroes and heroines. Destiny has led you to this place, my friend. Will you now follow it further?"

Ankhet is based in part on code from the old bbs game Pyroto Mountain, and written and coded by ex-players of Pyroto.  Up until now I have spent more hours playing Ankhet than any other game, ever.  At the moment it needs some support, and I thought I would spread the word.  It is a text based mmorpg and free, and easily the most amazing game I have played online.  I met my girlfriend on Ankhet, and have made other multiple lifetime friends.  In addition to pvp and permadeath, Ankhet has an extensive back-story, many many equippable items and detailed quest-lines and interesting forums.  Enjoy ;)
