   [ETHIC:TORTURE_AS_EXAMPLE:UNTHINKABLE] <- UNTHINKABLE!
-this is a suggestions thread, the suggestion is for this to be changed
   [ETHIC:TORTURE_FOR_INFORMATION:UNTHINKABLE] <- UNTHINKABLE!
-this is fine, pikes are torture as an example
   [ETHIC:TORTURE_FOR_FUN:UNTHINKABLE] <- UNTHINKABLE!
-this is fine, pikes are torture as an example
   [ETHIC:TORTURE_ANIMALS:UNTHINKABLE] <- UNTHINKABLE!
-animals dont siege you
[ETHIC:ASSAULT:PUNISH_SERIOUS] <- Corporal is fine for retribution - not terror.
-this is for punishing home-grown criminals, not war, which is strictly another matter entirely that involves law-enforcement
   [ETHIC:SLAVERY:PUNISH_CAPITAL] <- Executions are fine.
-again, this is punishment for dwarves not invaders
   [ETHIC:EAT_SAPIENT_OTHER:UNTHINKABLE] <- Not Elves.
-this just means they wont eat sapients, doesnt affect piking at all
   [ETHIC:EAT_SAPIENT_KILL:UNTHINKABLE] <- Still not Elves.
-this just means they wont eat invaders, doesnt affect piking at all
   [ETHIC:MAKE_TROPHY_SAME_RACE:APPALLING] <- Seriously.
-this just means they wont make bone crafts and totems out of other dwarves
[ETHIC:MAKE_TROPHY_SAPIENT:SHUN] <- Why impaling is not fine.
-this just means they wont make bone crafts and totems out of sapients, piking isnt making a lasting "trophy" it doesnt even kill them most of the time, its leaving them to rot in a way that conveniently "encourages" the next goblin siege to pause for a few seconds before sometimes (doesnt always work) slowly back away to the edge of the map.
[ETHIC:MAKE_TROPHY_ANIMAL:ACCEPTABLE] <- Why totems are fine.
-actually dwarves are content to make bone crafts and totems out of any type of bone or skull if you can obtain them through other means, such as a corpse grinder.

oh, and none of the other races would be offended by such an act because them all find torturing as an example acceptable and are all likely to already be at war with goblins anyway.

what kind of eggs were you making, like what cooking method. And im assuming you were making a type of cold pasta, if so then i cant help you there, i never tried that myself and wouldnt know how to do it.

Scrambled eggs. They burnt as soon as they hit the pan.

you did remember to add vegetable oil right? i mean before adding the eggs

hacked in lava rain eh...well the siege probly wouldnt have been that bad, i had a undead siege try to rush me to death in the summer of the first year since i embarked close to several towers.

And @ op, you mentioned nobles right? you had time to develop enough to get nobles, but not enough time to build anything from a great wall, trap maze, pit maze, drowning pit, dodge trap, or any other defensive system?

a better question is how did you get a magma-proof pump-stack running that early... my forts are usually defense-sufficient before i even start metalworking of any kind.
He didn't.

wait wait, so it "rained" lava? i thought evil biomes only rained blood. Or did he hack it in? i dont get it =/

dwarves should already be offending the gods enough though, with their:

-avarice: all dwarves are naturally greedy, in fact, the whole system is based on wealth with wealth triggering aggression from megabeasts and invaders; oh and have you noticed the liason's catchphrase is: "our fortunes rise and fall together".
-wrath: another prominent dwarven sin, it is best observe in times of hardship that would have simply blown over had everyone kept their cool. But NOOO because it isnt dwarven, no, dwarves must "tantrum", be it from a carelessly built child-smasher to a pet cat used for goblin bait; their rage quickly spreads to others and if not quickly controlled via burrows, smashers, and slabs, would quickly overwhelm a fortress.
-sloth: best demonstrated by tenacious infestations of nobles and in their juvenile form; children. Dwarves that just sit around all day doing nothing but making friends (see wrath), and wasting food and resources that would otherwise be used by hard-working dwarves.
-lust: the only thing that causes more tantruming and is harder to get rid of than a catsplosion, is a childsplosion. There is a reason dwarven children do not naturally have a population cap and the circumstance of players' ending up with over 50% of their population being children being common. Dwarves "breed" prolifically, without regard for the impact that a childsplosion would inevitably cause.
-pride: Most easily seen in dwarven nobles, who make mandates and demands and get mad if other dwarves have better stuff than they do. Seen in dwarves as a whole for their tendency to construct massive "projects" for no reason at all.

so the gods have plenty of reasons to want to wipe out the dwarven race, but there needs to be something that pushes them over the edge...

Quite so, this all seems very very goblin. Not Dorfy at all. If anything the only people who would be making forests of skeletons on spikes should be the goblin/demons. Or Elf barbecues.

exactly why the pike system is a necessity, creatures of cruelty such as goblins are likely psychopathic and would only understand fear. This is speaking to them in a language they understand. This is different from the goblins' version of ABUSE_BODIES because they use it when they're pillaging defenseless settlements (which may be dwarven...) and use it in a way to terrorize the civilians of enemy civilizations. Dwarves use it not because it's "dorfy" but because goblins cannot be reasoned with otherwise.

im not entirely convinced the 1x1 pen thing works either, its very hard to tell since eggs dont hatch sometimes even if you dont disturb them either. I also havent bred enough low-egg-yield animals to tell any significant difference between trained and tamed egg laying jabbers in this kind of hatchery (tamed ones dont get retrained). My last few jabberer hatchlings were from a tame one and the original trained one hasnt hatched in a few months now, but i also have tamed jabberers who also havent hatched in the same amount of time.

I have also been trying to hatch giant toadlings to make a swimming facility for goblins in addition to my rat pit, but had no success for 2 years. Note: the toad pen isnt 1x1, its 1x iunno like 5. But it could probly just have been bad eggs, not necessarily from disturbance from retraining.

has anyone seriously tested this or have proof from memory hacking/raws? how are you so sure?

So it seems i've been getting very very bad luck in the types of forgotten beasts that come visit me. My forgotten beasts show up about once or twice every season at random times and appear on all 3 cavern levels (i've yet to get a titan, surprisingly).

Recently i've had:
Banspo: A towering raven composed of snow. It has three narrow tail feathers and it undulates rhythmically. Beware its poisonous gas!     *status:Still alive and roaming my third cavern level; cave-in trap under construction
Ngalak Nunur Zanor: A towering humanoid composed of Ice. It has 4 straight horns and a gaunt appearance. Beware its deadly spittle!  *status: dead, caved in after a floor tile was removed by a child.
One: A enormous pterosaur covered in feathers. It has a large oval shell and moves deliberately. Beware its fire!
*status: dead, shot down by marksdwarves.

so yea...the only one i could engage directly was the 3rd one and i think i got lucky in that one of the first shots chipped it's wing and it crashed to the ground. I was also lucky in that the cavern sections it burned down had slopes and fire could not spread up or down Z levels.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: House Rules/Personal Challenges
« on: March 27, 2013, 08:21:07 pm »

11- Pacifist. If invaders break in, it's pretty much all over. No military training, or weapons (other than picks and axes, for job completion), or traps, no violent defenses whatsoever. Fun, but tends to end at the first siege in a torrent of blood.
this ones quite easy, just wall off; and it depends on how "flexible" violent defenses and traps mean. just build cave-in traps for all the goblins if your excluding simple traps only. Or secret passages that lure forgotten beasts and goblin sieges into a contained area that also lead to a arena where they duel and your dwarves watch.

:P I mentioned that I never wall off fortresses, so part of the challenge is from not walling it off completely. As for my limits for traps and violent defenses: no traps, simple or complex (no drowning chambers, no magma falls, no cave-in traps, no stone fall or weapon traps, not even cage traps... even though those are technically not violent so feel free to make an exception if you try it.)
I do let invaders fight amongst themselves, though, so if the goblins want to deal with my dragon problem for me they're more than welcome too.

ahh but you see we're never walled off completely, the end of my maze of cage traps for example still needs into my fortress, its just a really long detour when the siege shows up and your normal entrances close for some reason and an alternative one opens. I can see this is a very hard restriction, especially earlier (you'll practically need to go architecture right away, perhaps even using wood and skipping trying to break an aquifier). But, do you still allow air locks? because if not it'll probly be gg pretty early unless a siege and a forgotten beast show up at exactly the same time. Forgotten beasts can easily be lured into a 3x3 or even 1x3 airlock using a piece of crappy furniture, sieges require a sacrifice (preferably kitten or child) at the end of a maze to lock them up. Should still be fun though, as you'll have no way to get rid of the "siege" tag until another enemy that hates goblins show up, which means no regular trade and no regular migrants for a few years.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Roc Breeding.
« on: March 27, 2013, 08:08:43 pm »
You'll need to keep your animal trainers away from the female roc while she's incubating. Otherwise they'll move her off the nest in the process of reinforcing the training, and even one tick off the nestbox tile will kill the eggs.
are you sure moving them even for 1 second will kill the eggs? i thought it was just that they have to be on the nest or the eggs wont hatch

my method should still work tho, cuz the trainer will be forced to train the roc on the spot without moving if its a 1x1 room with the only square as the pen/training ground.

i had very bad timing giving my dwarves jobs, and i accidentally gave some dwarves the job to clean out one of my pits by unforbidding the items in them. I was butchering a few corpses at the time too, one of which was a forgotten beast corpse. I ended up wasting around 250 units of meat with one 209 stack due to it all going rotten cuz everyone was too busy to haul it >.<

edit: wait nvm...turns out i forgot to link the butcher shops to my main stockpile (i had to rebuild them to reposition them for a new staircase.
