It's implied that we are generated as awesome as we are right now. If we were, for example, kidnapped at birth and put in the game that's a different story but if we're normal old us then we probably aren't at all badass.

Kyle seems to have left after the ceremony. If anyone had stopped him before that they have seen him crying.
