I think it's because paternal instincts are associated as a manly thing and thus any good manly character has some form of them.

I don't want to stagnate (or at least see my hard work being blown off..despite all this new-found style of posting on a whim and all that chat with quick one-liners and shtuff. I'm more used to a few paragraphs of RP...)
