After seeing how good magic is getting I decided to make another addition from the inheritance cycle to make it harder.
Magic users fight each other by trying to break through mental barriers (Think the memories of the magic user help improve the barrier.) when one manages to break through they can take control of the others body to make them kill themselves. They can also go through memories like this though it is incredibly painful for the one who has their memories looked at. This is of course highly difficult on a battle field making it unwise to have magi trained for war since they are very easily defeated when using their magic and not paying attention to their barriers.

To start I will give my opinion on this idea:
I want guns to go *POP* you're dead like they should. None of that set amount of hitpoints I want to see realistic gun happenings. You shoot someone with a pistol there better be a decent hole there and they had best be hurting. In fact I want guns to go all the way back to when mages start to get powerful. I want to see people using guns as a way to channel magic better. But to be fair I think that tech should have its own advantages.
Now on to an idea of my own:
Magic should happen at the expense of the life force of the magic user or the people in the vicinity. Basically I think magic should work like it does in the inheritance cycle (If you haven't read it you should the books are great.) with it being fickle and powerful and most of all just as dangerous to the user as it is to the people around him. No magic should be easy or cheap.
