DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: half-decent adventurerering

im getting really annoyed at the minute, i cant seem to find any small animals to powerlevel on, except eagles and other nasty birds. and also, i cant make my hammerman companion sneak, even when i do.

by 'mostly harmless critters' what do you mean? i hardly ever find more than the occasional quite-harmless wolf or jackal ambushes in the wild. and do you mean i just find a herd, sneak into their midst, onto the ground, unsneak and skip turns so they can attack me? and unequip my shield to train dodge?

how do i train up swimming without being able to swim? do i just find a crutch and equip it to train crutch-walking? hwat are your recommended tactics on becoming and being a necromancer?

got a good one, my guy killed a bandit master, a bandit overlord, a vampire, a night creature and a giant lion... then got murdered by bogeymen on the road to the capital.

training fighting on bogeymen doesnt work very well, but getting legendary thrower before doing any quests is toats legit. taking bandit camps alone is amazeballs, because i can sit throwing infinite rocks all day, and finish them off when they're unconscious, and if they spot me, i just run away, hide behind a tree and sneak to start throwing again. same thing for random encounters, hide behind a tree, sneak, walk away, travel.

thanks a lot you guys, but carry on popsting if there are any other ways to do half-decent adventurerering

nice tips guys! ill try that throw farming tip. and training on bogeymen. about the armour, i just take what i find in lairs etc. i prioritise iron over bronze because they have similar defense but iron is lighter.

i sort of see where i'm going wrong now, but i still have questions:

does this mean i should get the 'knapper' skill to get sharp rocks to throw? should i take on quests alone because my friends cannot sneak?

ill have a go at some of these, but knowing me, they may not work  :-\

i see people in this forum often talking bout a multi-legendary adventurer they had, who killed 100's of goblins by means of tearing off their 4th toe, right foot with a whip made of flowers.

i, on the other hand, have a score of adventurers who died to a *********** chief in a camp which i got for the 3rd or so quest. the only lucky adventurer who didnt get a camp quest died to a goblin attack on the way to a big city.

is there a way to get a good adventurer? experience? good choices? or just simple luck? i would be happy for any answers to this, i cant watch the forum right now, because im off to an 8-hour ritual to xarkandushakk the dwarven god of random numbers, its the blue moon of felsite, so its an occasion which i really can't miss!

thanks in advance and may <carp> (9001) rain on you!

you always get the easy quests at the beginning: kill this night creature who has killed over 9000 people in their lust for murder!

and then you find an unarmed, totally naked peasant and kill him by stepping on his toes. you know the drill

its always when they expect you to find a camp and kill a chief and his men when i die. i think i need some more experience.

DF Gameplay Questions / Live Training
« on: May 08, 2013, 01:29:42 pm »
i just started a new fort (I'm still relatively new to this) and i heard about people who trap animals like fleshballs to practice live training on them.

1. could someone give me a list on what animals are good for live training and for which weapons (preferably harmless ones, **FUN** management is not one of my strong points)

2. how do i capture wild animals, especially in caves?

3. how do i setup a room for live training?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How can I make a Wall of only one Stone.
« on: April 18, 2013, 10:03:15 am »
when i make my walls, i assign a stockpile for the stone i want (e.g. chert) then i temporarily assign that stockpile to one of my masons workshops to make blocks, which are then brought to a stockpile on the top layer. i assign the walls to be built out of chert blocks and there you go!

P.S. I usually alter my workshop profiles to only allow good masons (once i have a manger) so that i can recruit a mason army to build thing that dont have quality (like walls)

DF Gameplay Questions / patrols and cassiterite
« on: April 15, 2013, 11:45:52 am »
in the [m]ilitary screen, ive set up 2 squads of marksdwarves to patrol around my ramparts with 4 dwarves minimum. for some reason though, i never see and dwarves up there.

i tried 2 things: setting up a burrow on my ramparts and setting them to defend the burrow every 2nd month of the year and train on the others, but when that didnt work, i set up a route with [N]otes, [r]outes and made a square route around them.

also, i set the dwarves to train with 4 dwarves minimum, but i only ever see a single dwarf in my 3-wide archery range (i set the room up and everything)

does anyone know what's wrong?

on the cassiterite issue: ive been probing for cassiterite (and therefore granite) pretty much across my map, but i havent found any. is it possible that i dont have any tin in my map? ive just done an import agreement for some bronze and tin, but that sucks if i cant make bronze for shortswords and armour.

DF Suggestions / item stands?
« on: April 15, 2013, 02:25:45 am »
im a relatively new player and ive only had a few strange moods, but ive also had some rather useless artifacts, like a figurine. that would be great if i could only trade the thing, so why not make a use for these and make item stands, which, when hovered over with [q] allow you to type in the name of an item or artifact and dwarves will place it there, boosting happiness?

DF Gameplay Questions / them caravans
« on: April 13, 2013, 09:36:28 am »
i have a new fort in a heavily forested zone (or whatever it is on the map) and when the dwarven caravan arrived, it didnt even get onto the map before i got the announcement: 'the wagons have bypassed your inaccessible site.' this baffles me as i checked when i built the depot whether it was accessible with [D], and all was fine and gay there. so i think i know what's happened: trees block caravans (like rocks) in a 3x3 square around them, and the caravan where it entered was blocked by a tree. another problem might be that they entered on the other side of an impassible river, and the only path i made across was a single wooden bridge, are there any mechanics with caravans and bridges that i should know about?

1. does this mean i'll have to remove all trees in a 3-wide strip around the map, with a path (or a road) leading to my fortress?
2. does this have any real downsides? (i still managed to get steel and aluminium off them)

please answer these questions if you can, or give any more advice that may be helpful, thanks!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: artifacts and moats
« on: April 13, 2013, 09:21:42 am »
to be fair that artifact was made of platinum, the 2nd most expensive material in the game. but thanks for the feedback on filling a moat up z-levels. i just realised i'm in a temperate zone, and i have snow on the ground in winter, so i'll dig the moat down another layer and fill that, but thanks all of you!

DF Gameplay Questions / bones, skulls and other good stuff
« on: April 08, 2013, 08:59:05 am »
i set up a little stockpile for bones, skulls, teeth etc. but nothing goes into it. i checked my butchers shop with [t], and its crammed full of things like panda bones, a kea skull (curse those bloody parrots) and poult skin. so i have questions:

1. do my dwarves still use this stuff? i checked and they arent forbidden.
2. why are they not in my nice bone stockpile?
