It's like a man sitting on a giant pile of gold he's accumulated in a small shack. Yes, he's living an austere life in order to build on that treasure, and yes he's giving away some of his coins to a select few who can manage to wind their way through a cavernous labyrinth of convoluted commands and abstract visuals. So these 500 or 1,500 souls get free treasure, such a generous fellow, though each must contort and twist himself around for each coin he takes. But then there are 1,000,000 souls eager to have it, and he's said,
"nay, rabble, I wish not to concern myself with your needs, for I am an artist and humble hobbyist, content to spend my days in this shack, building up ever more wealth and an ever more complex labyrinth that you must wind through to access my fortune. But it is free to all, yea, such is my generosity. Should all you hungry, starving masses wish to feed at my trough, just spend 300 hours solving my puzzle, then it shall all be yours. All you must do then is go through the labyrinth each time you want a coin, and I will giveth it. Good is the Lord and Toady. Sure, I could spend some time to tear down this labyrinth and make my door open to all, but I'd rather build up more gold. Such is my wont."
Exactly!

You seem to think it's inherently bad to think of your fortune of gold in this way, though. Toady would much rather, for the foreseeable future, spend his time gaining more gold coins to share with those who traverse through his labyrinth of corridors, than on simplifying the sharp turns and now-disused corridors of past endeavors in building the halls to his fortune.
You need to remember that Toady isn't actively working for more users and cash is because
they aren't his goals. If I'm understanding you correctly, you seem to think that Toady needs to improve the UI to get more notoriety and donations. But he isn't interested in gaining more notoriety and donations.
It's why you and all else who argue on this point are met with harsh push-back. Your entire reasoning behind the suggestion of "improve the UI" hinges on the Toad having particular motivations.
He does not have those particular motivations.
And in the labyrinth were many a devout follower, forever scolding the newcomers for their complaints: "This is how it must be, poor ignorant and stupid fools, for this is how it is. Accept or leave, for your heresies are not welcomed here.
Just to reiterate, since you posted this while I was typing my reply: we all know the UI could use improvements. The criticism you receive is on the reasons you give for the suggestion, not the suggestion proper.
No-one here is arguing the UI doesn't need fixing; everyone here is arguing the illogical reasonings of "more money and fans" for this project.
This actually reminds me of an occasional complaint the
Perl 6 project receives concerning its mascot, Camelia (the butterfly in the linked page). Essentially, once in a while people come either complaining or offering new versions of Camelia the butterfly to make the project more business/corporate friendly. The people with these complaints/suggestions fail to realize that being corporate-friendly is not our goal. If you can give us a good reason to change the mascot in line with our goals, awesome. But business-friendly doesn't matter.
Similarly, people come to these forums every once in a while suggesting to complain about the UI or offer specific improvements. When you're simply wishing Toady fixes this so you and others can have a better gaming experience, awesome. But suggesting the Toad does it
right now to be more successful in a business-oriented sense doesn't work, because those business-oriented measures of success don't matter.
