General Discussion / Re: Sigtext

Hey looky, my sigtext!

Spoiler: Block 1 (click to show/hide)

Do not click the link to my sigtext in my signature. It will merely lead you to this post. If in doubt, continue pressing the link until fully convinced of the validity of this previously stated truth.

And while my mind's on it, a case for American Exceptionalism℠: only America can turn a fraction into a political insult.
Not really, in fact it was the slave owning south that pushed for Slaves being Fully counted, because that way they (who had, thousands of slaves. Recall blacks are a very large racial group in the south) would get more representation, while the North objected as they had far fewer (and probably pointing out the hypocrisy of being non-citizens and yet getting represented as full). It said nothing morally, it was but a Compromise. "See? It's nothing personal, it's strictly business." (Figure out where the pseudo-quote is from and you get a cookie).

I was thinking more towards nowadays, where all someone in a political context has to do is say "three-fifths" or write it on a sign on you invoke instant vague bad feelings. Of course back in the slavery days 3/5 was probably a fine example of compromise to most moderate people.

America is exceptional like bad code is exceptional.

It randomly interrupts program flow to break everything.
:D I think I need a Sigtext thread post now.

Dawn of
The Second Day
-48 Hours Remain-
Accompanying music. (didn't post first day music because it didn't come to mind, so here it is for comparison.)

Seems like the deal in the Senate is still forming. Fingers crossed.

Well, like the article mentions, 8 other states also have (chemical) castration on their criminal books. California and Texas among them.
Yeah, and the Three-Fifths Compromise is still in effect. American Laws have no expiration date, and they can remain on the books long after they either become irrelevant or cease to be enforced. For Example, while Federal Law has one set of rules regarding Marijuana, they have decided not to enforce them in states where recreational use is legal, effectively annulling it for those areas.

How about a clean-up amendment to get rid of that part of the Constitution, just for clarity's sake? :)

EDIT: I think in general it's an alien concept to many that a governing body can decide to just not pay attention to some of its rules, and if no-one particularly cares about that rule then it stops mattering.

And while my mind's on it, a case for American Exceptionalism℠: only America can turn a fraction into a political insult.

General Discussion / Re: Bay12's Desktops

I only cut out the bottom part of the image- her head is just really close to the top of the picture.

The obvious solution here is to move the toolbar to the bottom and get used to a new desktop arrangement :P .

This has the unfortunate side effect of completely ignoring the possibility of a female perpetrator of such crimes, which is not a good thing.
You can chemically castrate women, so gender bias isn't really an issue here. The general immorality of it for anybody is.

Yeah, I did a quick check to make sure before posting. Although it is possible, I would argue that the introducers of the bill are almost certainly thinking about men, and are almost certainly concerned about the perpetrator inflicting unwanted pregnancy, rather than concerned the victims being forced to inflict said pregnancy.

Of course, we need to actually read the bill to see what their definition of castration is.

231
A reminder that the state-level American government is still up and running, this time in Alabama: A bill to castrate molesters over the age of 21, with the convicted footing 100% of the bill.

For things like this, I have a quick litmus test for whether I feel it goes too far or not.

"How would you feel if the accused turned out to be innocent, and you had carried out this punishment already?"

It's what prevents me from approving of the death penalty, or of this. In fact, it has lead me towards wanting rehabilitation over punishment, and that locking someone away is an evil. Sometimes a necessary evil, not everyone can be rehabilitated, but something being necessary does not prevent it from also being evil. Necessity does not make something good, it makes something necessary.

But what about the molesters who kept themselves from doing even more molestation in the interests of not impregnating their victims? :P Joking aside, my actual concern with the bill is that
  • Like Descan said, it's not something I'm comfortable actually doing, especially if "oops, you're actually innocent. Well, um... good luck!" is what happens.
  • This has the unfortunate side effect of completely ignoring the possibility of a female perpetrator of such crimes, which is not a good thing.

The White House meeting on the proposed Senate deal appears to be delayed, although it is unclear if this is a good or bad sign. It could signal a dangerous problem, but could also suggest that negotiations are going too well to interrupt at this time.

According to that page and this link:

  • Again, while no one was looking, a legitimate proposal occurred. Harry Reid sent McConnell, head of Senate Republicans, his plan, which extends the debt ceiling for 6-9 months, and funds the government till mid-late December at $986 billion, between the $967 temporary sequestration limits republicans demand, and the previous level of government funding at the level of above 1 trillion (can't get exact numbers) Democrats demand. If McConnell accepts, we have our way out.
Ah, just found it. Linky link.

it seems that the postponement is just to allow Reid and McConnell more time to work out their deal. There's nothing about this to suggest to me that things are going downhill instead of negotiating taking a while sometimes.

For those who think this may have defanged the Tea Partiers....

I'm pretty sure they have been defanged in the eyes of most of the rest of the country, they're just too crazy to notice the pain of that operation :) .

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Vampire blood

Well, you can just drop the water in your waterskin on the tile where the blood is, instead of taking the blood to the river. :)

In my experience, blood on its own does turn you into a vampire, but it's not a guarantee unless its mixed in with water.

  • Rick Perry, Governor of Texas, continues his thinly disguised campaigning for President. He has released a ad criticizing dysfunction is Washington, and that Conservative Governors are leading the way to prosperity. I can only wonder who he means by that.

Quite clearly he is talking about Bob McDonnell.

Color me very hopeful. That is a plan I can get behind.

Also, considering recent topics of discussion on this thread, you'll never guess what today's XKCD is.

aand now i hold you responsible to making the first post on the second to last and first to last day

if the moon's going to crash into to the economy then it will happen with style
Oh-ho-ho, I was already planning on it! I'll be sure to keep close watch for when FearfulJesuit next changes the topic title (or 00:00 EDT approaches, whichever comes first).

And in the interests of being on topic, looky here what news.google.com had at the top of its page from about 2 minutes ago: Senate Democrats Press New Front in Budget Battle

Bold move on the Dems' part, but they just might have the leverage at this point, so why not?

Wow, I appear to have managed to just make it. I was getting shakingly nervous as I was finishing up that someone would at least post something, and my post would no longer be the first of the third-to-last day. I wasn't even considering other joke-makers. Phew.  :)

Dawn of
The First Day
-72 Hours Remain-

I'm so, so sorry. I just couldn't help myself :P . (If you don't understand where this is coming from, it's Majora's Mask.)

Here's to a hopefully fruitful round of talks this week, before the end!

EDIT: Of course, 'dawn' is meant in a more figurative sense than in the game. Ooh, also I appear to be first post on the next page, so the top of this post makes a nice page header :)

You can butcher (and then eat) dead sapient creatures by modifying the RAWs for whatever race you prefer playing as (humans, dwarfs, etc.) Ask details in the modding forum, just know it involves EAT_SAPIENT_OTHER and EAT_SAPIENT_KILL

DF General Discussion / Re: Does Toady delegate?
« on: October 13, 2013, 11:11:23 pm »
It's like a man sitting on a giant pile of gold he's accumulated in a small shack. Yes, he's living an austere life in order to build on that treasure, and yes he's giving away some of his coins to a select few who can manage to wind their way through a cavernous labyrinth of convoluted commands and abstract visuals. So these 500 or 1,500 souls get free treasure, such a generous fellow, though each must contort and twist himself around for each coin he takes. But then there are 1,000,000 souls eager to have it, and he's said,

"nay, rabble, I wish not to concern myself with your needs, for I am an artist and humble hobbyist, content to spend my days in this shack, building up ever more wealth and an ever more complex labyrinth that you must wind through to access my fortune. But it is free to all, yea, such is my generosity. Should all you hungry, starving masses wish to feed at my trough, just spend 300 hours solving my puzzle, then it shall all be yours. All you must do then is go through the labyrinth each time you want a coin, and I will giveth it. Good is the Lord and Toady. Sure, I could spend some time to tear down this labyrinth and make my door open to all, but I'd rather build up more gold. Such is my wont."

Exactly! :D You seem to think it's inherently bad to think of your fortune of gold in this way, though. Toady would much rather, for the foreseeable future, spend his time gaining more gold coins to share with those who traverse through his labyrinth of corridors, than on simplifying the sharp turns and now-disused corridors of past endeavors in building the halls to his fortune.

You need to remember that Toady isn't actively working for more users and cash is because they aren't his goals. If I'm understanding you correctly, you seem to think that Toady needs to improve the UI to get more notoriety and donations. But he isn't interested in gaining more notoriety and donations.

It's why you and all else who argue on this point are met with harsh push-back. Your entire reasoning behind the suggestion of "improve the UI" hinges on the Toad having particular motivations. He does not have those particular motivations.

And in the labyrinth were many a devout follower, forever scolding the newcomers for their complaints: "This is how it must be, poor ignorant and stupid fools, for this is how it is. Accept or leave, for your heresies are not welcomed here.

Just to reiterate, since you posted this while I was typing my reply: we all know the UI could use improvements. The criticism you receive is on the reasons you give for the suggestion, not the suggestion proper.

No-one here is arguing the UI doesn't need fixing; everyone here is arguing the illogical reasonings of "more money and fans" for this project.

This actually reminds me of an occasional complaint the Perl 6 project receives concerning its mascot, Camelia (the butterfly in the linked page). Essentially, once in a while people come either complaining or offering new versions of Camelia the butterfly to make the project more business/corporate friendly. The people with these complaints/suggestions fail to realize that being corporate-friendly is not our goal. If you can give us a good reason to change the mascot in line with our goals, awesome. But business-friendly doesn't matter.

Similarly, people come to these forums every once in a while suggesting to complain about the UI or offer specific improvements. When you're simply wishing Toady fixes this so you and others can have a better gaming experience, awesome. But suggesting the Toad does it right now to be more successful in a business-oriented sense doesn't work, because those business-oriented measures of success don't matter.
