DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Fortress plumbing
« on: July 04, 2016, 11:00:58 am »
I'm in half mountain half temperate savannah. No evil. The brook freezes over in the mountain then it takes a small while for the savannah part to run dry.

For a mist generator come drowning trap I'm thinking of a vertical shaft. On z=0 the shaft runs next to a hallway and creates mist for passing dwarves. At the switch of a lever a floodgate in the shaft at Z=-1 closes allowing the hallway to sudenly flood. Open the floodgate again then it all drains out. We will see how that works out.

Also going to have to make a proper hosipital then add wells.

Also I didn't know that trick with getting clay/sand underground?? That sounds incredibly useful! Magma pottery here I come.

As said not in an evil biome so probably won't bother using baths. I wish I could divert the brook into an underground river through the fort but then there are issues with it freezing at the surface and losing the water source.

Also I would have thought a moat would be useful. I thought enemies can climb now? (first new game since update)

In my fortress there isn't any dirt so I'm having to flood sections of rock to make farms. At the moment I have a cistern fed by pump from a brook. So far I set up a farm then got halfway to setting up a lever that floods the entrance U bend to my fort.

Are there any other fun dwarf water projects to use water with? Useful or just fun. I thought I would ask now while my fortress is young so that it is still easy to chage things or plan stuff.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Problem dwarves

In my fortress I have some problem dwarves.

In the image you see Tulon rurathel sebshos omtal. Her only bad thoughts are horrified from seeing the trader die, loathing from being beaten (from starting a fight), regretful from a fight and grouchy from rain. She did however get happiness from sparring.

As you can see she just castrated a dude then killed him. For ages this dwarf has been drawn and haggard. I put her in the military so she wouldn't start fistfights in the dining room which largely worked casue the other soldiers block her shots but occasionally you get this.
Over a year I just checked and she has killed 5 dwarfs in fistfights.

Another of my dwarfs have nothing but good times in recent history from the legendary dining room. However ages ago they went to the refuse pile and saw a load of corpses. Now they are depressed. Looking at it all my sad dwarfs went to the refuse pile and had a bad time (x33) from corpses.

How do I stop this asshole from starting fistfights and killing people? How do I stop the other idiots getting all mopey over dead crundle x50? I can hardly leave them to rot where they die

10 masterwork giant iron axe blades do create quite a big mess I discovered. This is the price I pay for two nearly maxed skill weaponsmiths

I forgot werebeasts both swim and are trapavoid.

I may no longer have problems with over population

Time to dig a pit for the infected (and thus decrease unemployment)

One of the limits is that I haven't found much coal. I have a small pile for emergency buy I dont want to squander it on masterpieve clay mug.

I did however make a barracks. Unemployment temporarily went to 0 as dwarfs thundered from the dining room to grab their logs and construction took 10 seconds. Currently got two sworddwarfs so a only occasionally employed butcher and a peasant are now off the dole.

I might try doubling my brewing. I have a guy on repeat brewing and another on repeat making barrels (I also now have a few masterpiece barrels floating about).

I have a fort of 36 employable dwarfs. Fairly regularly idlers will reach 20.
What do I do with my dwarfs? I have something like 1500 food. I have a defensive wall two Z high on the surface. I have small forts on the two cavern layers I breached.
I'm just not sure how to stimulate these idle dwarves.

The images on this thread seem to be quite unreliable. Though usually if they don't work "Open Image in new tab" will access them.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Did I mention I have little idea of how to design bigger ships?

Also are spacedocks limited by size? Because they look too thin to hold any large craft.

also adding a fighter

How do I connect spacedocks? I can't see what block would actually fit.

Of curiosity how do people tend to make your bases? That was my first attempt. With shields on it gets covered completely I believe.

I feel when I get into a game I will have a lot of fun discovering the intricacies of construction.

Updated
That craft is on the previous page. On the last post I pasted the wrong link.
I added a docking strut to the back and placed a shield inside because I couldn't think of anything better.
