DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Fortress plumbing
« on: July 03, 2016, 11:20:05 am »
In my fortress there isn't any dirt so I'm having to flood sections of rock to make farms. At the moment I have a cistern fed by pump from a brook. So far I set up a farm then got halfway to setting up a lever that floods the entrance U bend to my fort.

Are there any other fun dwarf water projects to use water with? Useful or just fun. I thought I would ask now while my fortress is young so that it is still easy to chage things or plan stuff.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Problem dwarves
« on: November 05, 2015, 02:25:17 pm »

In my fortress I have some problem dwarves.

In the image you see Tulon rurathel sebshos omtal. Her only bad thoughts are horrified from seeing the trader die, loathing from being beaten (from starting a fight), regretful from a fight and grouchy from rain. She did however get happiness from sparring.

As you can see she just castrated a dude then killed him. For ages this dwarf has been drawn and haggard. I put her in the military so she wouldn't start fistfights in the dining room which largely worked casue the other soldiers block her shots but occasionally you get this.
Over a year I just checked and she has killed 5 dwarfs in fistfights.

Another of my dwarfs have nothing but good times in recent history from the legendary dining room. However ages ago they went to the refuse pile and saw a load of corpses. Now they are depressed. Looking at it all my sad dwarfs went to the refuse pile and had a bad time (x33) from corpses.

How do I stop this asshole from starting fistfights and killing people? How do I stop the other idiots getting all mopey over dead crundle x50? I can hardly leave them to rot where they die

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Problems with unemployment
« on: October 27, 2015, 02:50:40 pm »
I have a fort of 36 employable dwarfs. Fairly regularly idlers will reach 20.
What do I do with my dwarfs? I have something like 1500 food. I have a defensive wall two Z high on the surface. I have small forts on the two cavern layers I breached.
I'm just not sure how to stimulate these idle dwarves.

DF Gameplay Questions / Removing the dead from reclaim fortresses
« on: May 12, 2013, 02:59:35 pm »
I recently had to abandon a fort during a siege. The fort population was in the 100s.
Quite a few died in the siege but when I abandoned it seems everyone was killed leaving a list of dead in  the hundreds, now when I reclaim it is impossible to entomb all the corpses before murderous ghosts pop up. Even when sending all mason expeditions to build masses of coffins they will make no dent in the ghost population.

Is there a way to remove the ghost population by editing any of the files?

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarves sitting on their construction site
« on: May 10, 2013, 02:45:01 pm »
I have been making an above ground castle but a massive problem I found was my masons kept sitting on the walls they were constructing. This meant when they were about to finish construction the would cancel with the error "Creature occupying Site" and suspend construction, if I recommence or cancel and redesignate walls they just do the same thing.

Does anyone know how to stop them?

This entire room here is built of a tower and has no support below it.
Directly to the left of the yellow cross is the offending tile.
Shortly before this screenshot there was a wall there. Because I tend to have problems with the outside corners of walls not being built so I had this wall built using access  from the left (notice the floor tile). Once the wall was built I deconstructed the floor and accidently collapsed the wall.
I quickly rebuilt the floor and planned to rebuild the wall when I noticed the blue hole.

One Z-level below I notice that there must be water in the hole.

Another Z-level and we reach the farms, the tile to the right of the hole has been deconstructed and there is a unconscious cat showing no other injury (might be a coincidence). Also note the wells.

wahay
the yellow cross now is where the hole ends. This cistern feeds directly into the river, no floodgates at all. Until recently at the same spot as this mystery hole there was a door. Locked and tightly shut. The door disappeared and now there is about to commence a significant amount of !!FUN!!.
There stems my first question, has anything like this happened before?

The second is: How can my fort be saved?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The hole stops by now (I kept the yellow cross in the same place for reference). Nothing much on this level. Notice (turquoise X) a stunned miner at the bottom of the cistern.

Next is just the stairway (2x2)

Comes out into my slightly flooded workshop level containing all industries.

Food, kitchen, still (butcher and fisheries are above ground).

Never quite finished the dining hall...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Quarters level. Most of the 43 residents sleep rough. To the top left of the stairway is a small hospital. Only two injured people and both are physically able( though they might just rest through the flood till they drown).

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
After 3 levels of 2x2 stairs the caverns appear.

Another 20 levels the staircase narrows to 1x1.

46 more levels goes to the roof of the third cavern.

Using Phoebus tileset and Masterwork Fortress Mod while playing as Orcs.
So can collapses cause craters and does anyone know how to stop a fortress flooding?
