If you can capture a husk, they make excellent archery training targets, because it is literally impossible to kill them with bolts.

I always cry at happy endings.

Welcome back to the land of the living, bp.
#6 No modding the raws. Yes,thou art not allowed to edit the reactions to achieve cheap and endless amounts of metal.
Can i abuse the in-game melting mechanics to generate infinite metal (no modding needed)?
I vote no, because if you're going to do that, you might as well just mod the raws, it doesn't make a difference. You're still obtaining cheap (in both meanings of the word) metal, without doing any real work for it. However, if the majority votes yes, then I will accept their decision.

Wait. Did Knifegravel have flux? 'Cause if not, I just wasted a bunch of wood making charcoal.

Also, did Bay 12 go down for anyone else too?
Yeah, it was down for me too.

Seeing as how Legendel claimed his turn on October 9th, and it has been almost a month since then, shall we skip him? Maybe bp or Jovus could replace him in the rotation.

Oh, and ShadowHammer, I don't know if you saw this earlier but you have grown attached to your copper war hammer. Which means you won't unequip it. Ever. Sorry.
Drat. Oh well, copper's still not terrible as a blunt weapons material. I could serve as a defense against cavern creatures or something.

From here on, the Journal reads something like "Sodium Sodium Sodium Sodium, Batdwarf!"
Ya know, I was going to make some sodium jokes too, but then I thought, "NaH".

End of the second year, and we have some weapon lords? Impressive. What level did me and mask start at, on embark?
Also, you can make hammers out of the silver you found in the caverns, it's actually a very good blunt weapon material.

I asked a few weeks ago if someone could take my place... no one did, did they? Oh well, I can probably do my turn eventually.

Could you please dorf me and add me to the turn list as Shadowhammer, male, armor or weaponsmith?

When I first saw this, I was like, steampunk! Fun! Then I read the latest actions we took, and was like, what. Then I remembered that this forum has some connections to dwarf fortress, so I shouldn't have been surprised, and I'm posting to watch.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

I cheated a screwed-up mooder back to sanity (reverted to beginning of year) - i'd totally failed to keep track of him while i was busy overseeing the clothesmaking effort and he went melancholy, probably for lack of unforbidden bones. It was all about the loss of a useful dwarf really - it was an engraving mood, and a possession, too. I had already lost two dwarfs recently to a hunting mishap; it probably wasn't such a bright idea to let the only married female dwarf in the entire fort act as sole hunter on a savage embark. She kept going quite a while, but eventually, the wildlife caught up with her, in the shape of an angry giant hyena. And since her youngest child was only four months old, the second death was inevitable.

I finally, at long last, managed to purge the infestation of gigantic tortoises from the map: they just squat down and become completely invulnerable when attacked. The annoying thing is that some of the more aggressive tame animals, notably dogs, will sit on top of the tortoise and attack it for years on end. I eventually built cage traps all around the beasts, then ordered the dog slaughtered (and revoked the order after the dog got moved). The tortoise would then stumble into one of the traps and could be tamed and butchered. I also used them to kick-start my citizen militia, they're all adequate to skilled with crossbows now.
You can also use them to get ALL the wrestling levels; recruits will just smack them around without actually doing any damage, and when they start complaining, you can just relieve them from duty and they run away.

CRUUUUUUUUUUNNNNDDDDDDLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLES!

Catch crundles, train crundles, breed crundles, eat the bastards.

In regards to the original question, if you're swimming in puppies, it wouldn't hurt to assign war dogs to the key people who frequent the caves.

I modded in war crundles and throw them in suicide waves at sieges.
I agree, crundles are great. You can also make lever linked crundlecage bombs to disrupt enemy archers.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How do I make a danger room?
« on: November 05, 2013, 09:43:36 pm »
First post, after a long time of lingering in the shadows...

In this room, place 3 weapon traps that contain 10 wooden training spears each.

I used upright spears in mine, but I suppose weapon traps would avoid the annoyance of having the room inaccessible because the spears are in the wrong position...
I think NSK meant to say upright spears, not weapon traps, because weapon traps don't target dwarves or any other friendlies.
