Also, to whoever made the forgotten beast art contest picture archive: It's awesome.
I know. Three cheers for Bmaczero!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Lizardwomen "friendly"-How to get in a cage

Another way of caging it is to use a webbed cage. That's almost a guaranteed cage capture of almost anything except those thing that are both immune to traps and webs. But beware, the things that can be captured with such includes your dwarves.
Well this is convenient. I just captured a GCS. Handy, thanks for the advice.

Did she get a name? I believe names cavern-occupants will always become friendly.
She was indeed named: Brutefang.
Also, I tried it again, for science, and although the fact that the blowgunners kept paralyzing dwarves so they died of suffocation instead slowed things down, I was able to make the second one friendly.
Now I have a different question:

They are unaffected by traps, so how do I get them into a cage?
Will putting them in a danger room be likely to kill them, due to their lack of clothes?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Humans suck at diplomacy
« on: October 21, 2013, 09:05:36 pm »
I've had humans siege after just one incident of their traders getting killed by a goblin ambush.

It's a real pain, since they just sit on the borders and try to pick off any dwarves that wander outside. It's quite difficult to kill them without simply charging your military at them through a swarm of arrows.
Dig a tunnel directly below the human encampment. Then dig a staircase up into the middle of the attackers. That way they can only get off one volley.

On the topic, you could attempt to knock the diplomat unconscious on top of a cage trap, and then sell the cage to the next human trade caravan. He didn't actually die, so the humans won't get mad at you.
EDIT: nevermind.

DF Gameplay Questions / Lizardwomen "friendly"-How to get in a cage
« on: October 21, 2013, 09:00:34 pm »
This is really weird. I found some reptile people in a cavern, and I wanted to capture them. Long story short, stuff went wrong, and one of my dwarves was killed by a reptilewoman spearman. As soon as she killed him, she became friendly. Yeah. She killed a dwarf, so everyone else was like, "I never liked him anyway. Welcome to the fortress!"
Is this normal? answered-yes.
Now I have a two more questions:

They are unaffected by traps, so how do I get them into a cage?
Will putting them in a danger room be likely to kill them, due to their lack of clothes?

I made a couple versions of Migrur:
This one's a .gif, and I couldn't resize it without it getting all stupid, so just use ctrl scroll:

And here's a sketch:

OOC: It's fairly laggy. As in normally it's fine at 50 fps, but as soon as the goblins arrived, it dropped to 12.

So many have fallen. I was overseeing burial, and one slab in particular caught my eye; it was dedicated to “master Shadowhammer”, who apparently was killed this year by some kinda weird quetzal thing. He had only slain one goblin, but he died defending his home from a terrible foe, and that is enough for me to call him a hero. Now he lies forgotten in some deep cavern, along with so many other heroes.
~~~
Well, that's basically my turn. Here's the save:
Nope. Hammers have contact area of 10 while crossbows have 10000. Smaller contact area is better.
Agreed.
He claimed his turn on the 9th, so he still has four more days. Hopefully he'll post by then.
OOC: I won't be able to play for a few days, so can you swap in an alternate for me for just this week?
Also, I can confirm that there is no trade, so presumably no migrants after the hardcoded ones. This will be fun indeed.
EDIT: also the fortress is named "Crystalmaze".
Year 30
Just my luck. Forced to leave the warmth of our halls to “make a grand new fortress for the glory of Regzan!” Strike the earth, bah!
We have gotten a magma smelter up and running, but the fact that andesite, the main layer stone, isn’t magma safe really set things back.
My companions are soft fools. We brought a huge stock of perfectly good meat, but oh no, they wouldn’t eat it. “It’s raw, mister Shadowhammer! I can’t eat raw meat, mister Shadowhammer! Now I’m starving, mister Shadowhammer!” What kind of pansy can’t eat raw meat? Finally their complaints got to me and I let them build a kitchen.
Ah!! The horse was starving, so we butchered it, and then the chopped up bits rose from the dead!! A few lucky shots put it back to rest, but the dogs got a real work out keeping them that way until we could get them to the volcano and throw them in. I have created a retracting bridge for easier disposal of future zombies.
Apparently we have found a great magma sea. Weird, I coulda sworn that was just the volcano shaft. Well, the miners know best, I suppose.
Now the miners are going on about this magma poo, that they discovered. Strange, the “pool” is like twice the size of the “sea”. Stupid miners.
The cheesemaker was taken by a fey mood today. At first I thought he was just going crazy from not being able to practice his esteemed craft of cheesemaking, but then he made a trumpet out of two logs, so I guess he’s okay. I’m tempted to throw him into the volcano for wasting some of our precious logs though.
We really are running low on wood. I have told the miners to keep digging deeper in hopes of finding the caverns, but no luck yet, and my reign is running out. Hopefully my successor will be able to find them.
There was a very near disaster. The plump helmet farms were left unplanted for a short time, but it was long enough for us to run out of distillable items. Then the beer ran out, and if the harvest hadn’t come in just then, there would’ve been some serious riots over our dwindling alcohol stocks. I have assigned a work order manager to prevent it from happening again.
Just when I had lost hope, we struck caverns! They are very deep, around level -20, but they don’t contain any nether cap or thorn bush, so they aren’t even the most dangerous level of cavern. Now we have a source of both water and wood for the fortress.
One of our masons has been taken by a fey mood. Using two granite boulders, he made a bed. You wouldn’t think that it would be comfortable to sleep in, being made out of solid rock and all, but I guess he wasn’t really thinking of practicality.
Spring has arrived, and my reign is ended. Hopefully I leave the fortress in good hands.
I have had no time to do anything this weekend, with it being canadian thanksgiving and family and stuff, but I will for sure complete at least a year by Friday.
I take this back. I will not be capable of finishing a year before tomorrow. Can I take until Monday?
This is going to be close. I played up until early winter, and then my dad had to bring the laptop to his work, and I have volleyball today and tomorrow basically all day. I'm in mountain time too, so I'm like two hours behind eastern. I'm pretty sure I can finish though.
Oh great news! We finally found that dead ibex corpse. Now that I know where it is, I will sleep much easier.
Oh that's okay then.
