Sounds pretty cool. I am going on vacation very soon, but will be back on Monday, exactly a week from today. May I have the first (second I suppose) turn? I will try my best not to doom the fortress, to make it a shining light for all dwarfkind!

And, if I may make a suggestion, we could make a massive hidden corpse stockpile, that allows only goblin and megabeast corpses, so that the next overseer could "discover" the remains of fallen enemies, and thus gain some understanding of the current level of threat.

Also, I'm assuming that your not allowed to leave notes?

Hmmm... I just did some quick math, and at the speed my computer runs df, I could play to the 20 year goal in my single week if I played 12 hours a day...

LETS DO THIS!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How do I trade animals with the Caravens?

Ah, but with a pair of cows, one might gain an infinite number of calves, from which one might gather an infinite number of bones, which could be processed into an infinite number of crafts, which one could sell for infinite profit.

Fortunately for the player, other civ's don't realize this.

I've had this a couple times before. Curiously, it only seems to appear on organic fb's. I think that it is merely an option to make some fb's have no special power. I could very well be wrong though. You should check legends mode and see if it was ever cursed.

if you dig down a little bit, you'll come across a cave. don't explore caves until you have a small military going. there are lots of nasties down there.

most of the creatures down there are non aggressive, but these are the few to watch for.

the giant cave spider is the most powerful cavern creature. it spawns uncommonly in the 1st and 2nd layer. they can shoot webs, which is extremely overpowered and practically an insta-kill against melee. they also have no pain and no stun, which means they cannot be knocked unconscious. they also have a powerful venom that can completely paralyze its opponent. use traps or marksdwarves. i usually mod so that they're breedable because they are fucking useful on your side.

troglodytes are an early problem. they spawn in the 1st and 2nd layer and are extremely common. each trog is strong enough to kill a dwarf, but a soldier is more than a match for it. they will charge for your fortress, so be careful. a squad of 10 should take care of them.

cave crocodiles are nasty ambushers. they spawn in the 1st and 2nd layers. they are massive and will generally try to ambush your dwarves by staying in the water. they like to bite off limbs. these guys are incredibly valuable as tamed creatures since they are powerful and lay a crap-ton of eggs.

blind ogres are powerful attackers bigger than a full grown elephant. they spawn in the 2nd and 3rd layers. their size makes them extremely formidable opponents. these guys like to strangle your dwarves and are a match for any dwarf. fight them using superior numbers.
Seconded. Earlier this evening, actually, one of my axelords lost his leg to a pair of cave ogres before his friend could come help him out. More advice about ogres and other large cavern creatures: use piercing weapons, spears preferably, to fight them, because slicing weapons (axes and swords) kill by bisection/limb severing/beheading, and its pretty hard to bisect something that's like ten times thicker than you are.

If this advice is too specific/advanced at your stage of the game, here's the easy version: don't fight them. Use traps instead.

Woah! Spiral was the one who was breeding sea serpents? I didn't realize that. That was some dwarfy research. Also, dragon works was epic.
And, to make it easier so you don't have to go through the whole dragon works story, the "long fight" that urist master spoiled for you is the endless reincarnation of slain warriors, both friend and foe. Death by adamantine is the only way for them to be put to rest forever, thus the importance of the upright blade. However, they only reincarnate once a year (or season, or something) you do still have time to ready yourself for an endless assault. Get down quick, grab the sword, get back up quick, and then make sure your chosen champion is only forced to take them on a few at a time.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Possible Swiss army dwarf - Hunter?
« on: August 19, 2013, 07:50:12 pm »
They will attempt to drag the kill back, but if there are other animals nearby, they get "interrupted by animal" and just keep shooting until 1. They run out of ammo 2. They kill all the animals 3. They die.

Hunting is a very good way of training marksdwarf skill, though, so even if the corpses are all left to rot, it is not profitless.

few things are more annoying than watching a dwarf fire fruitlessly on a s-l-o-w-l-y advancing undead.
"Fire fruitlessly"? Any hit with a crossbow bolt, no matter where, will instantly kill any zombie. Are you referring to husks/thralls?

i only read this and likot soapeater because i like the publishers and they are interesting stories.
...

Um

Isn't that why most people read stories?

I feel as though I'm missing something...

I agree though, the story is very interesting.

you do only get stacks of five, but they can carry 5 stacks of 5 bolts at once, so they can still carry 25.

I shall update it today. Sorry I've been away for a while; I'll do my best to keep this running more efficiently from now on. First succession game, and all.
Quite all right. 'Tis a very good succession game, especially for your first one.

Far side of the river is fine, just as long as you put a roof like this on top of my house:

to give him a place to shoot from so he can defend his door and to ensure that he stands directly adjacent to a fortification at all times.
#=fortification
+=floor
V=ramp down

Will need to get you an ammo stockpile. :) Might include wood-crafting and wood-cutting into your skills so you can make your own wooden bolts without having to go near the fortress.
Or give him bonecarving so that he can make deadlier bone bolts from the carcasses of animals that he hunts.

They also love to make a statue of another dwarf surrounded by vermin that the other dwarf hates.  I find this hilarious.
Whenever I get a statue like this, I put it in the dwarf's tomb. They will be guarded in death by that which they hated in life!

So, for clarification, it's currently enolate's turn, because matoro and vine dragon couldn't take theirs? And enolate's current plan is to tame/train war hippos. If this is correct, might the OP be updated?

I would also definitely like to be included if this ever starts up. SO MUCH AWESOME! Might take awhile to do a full rotation with fifty players on the list, so perhaps this thread could be split into, say, ten child threads with links to this one? They would all have the same basic premise, and they could start out as the same world, but then would be shaped and changed by the players. It would be cool to see how much we could influence history.

On a similar topic, does anyone have guesstimates for release date?

Also, sloth II could be an elite, because he'd no doubt be a legendary miner.
