DF Community Games & Stories / Re: Warhelm: Spartan Fortress (community)
« on: August 08, 2013, 10:36:16 am »
A roman fort... Very good idea indeed.
We have to throw your Ida out the window because you actually like elves what do you think this is rivendell
I have to agree with this. However, since you always seem to get yourself dorfed as a spartan, in every community or succession game I've seen you in, you have partially redeemed yourself. I will definitely be enslaving the elves, though.

I'm going on vacation very soon, but when I get back, I will make a roman fort.

Ya know how, a few months after the first really big migrant wave, a bunch of babies are born in quick succession? Well, I had most of the migrants in the military. This was the first and only fort I'd ever use danger rooms in, so I didn't know about the side effects they had on babies, and so I didn't immediately kick the child bearing mothers out of the military. I gave the station order, and set the lever to repeat. I then went to supervise mining operations.

I think you can all figure out what happened next.

edit:
this does sound a lot like the 'future of the fortress' thread over in 'DF general discussion'
Is it just me, or does garath seem to be hinting at something? It might just be me.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: What does war training actually do?
« on: August 07, 2013, 12:49:13 pm »
The consensus seems that it merely makes them more aggressive. I assumed this was it, as you can't give them war training in the Arena, but they don't run away anyway.

As soon as one dorf is on fire, he lights all his friends on for too, without them having a dodge or block opportunity. What you need is to train toughness on your soldiers, so that they keep on fighting even while being engulfed in fire hotter than magma.

It is also a viable strategy to have a line of dual wielding shield bearers in the front of your forces to block the fire for those behind them. I haven't tried this, though.

This is only if you're a dwarf adventurer, right? I can't get a legendary human to migrate, can I?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dealing With The Aftermath of A Battle
« on: August 06, 2013, 10:52:25 pm »
I came up a with a simple system for my own fort which can save a ton of time. When you deconstruct a wall, you may have noticed that a bunch of items teleport to the spot where the deconstructer was standing. In fact, every item in that 16x16 region will teleport to that spot. The trick is to make a dwarf deconstruct a wall while standing under an atom smasher. You can try something like this:

BBO
OXO
OOO

O = Wall
X = Wall to be deconstructed.
BB = bridge, raises to the left or right. For best results, raise before deconstructing wall.

Of course, you'll probably need to build several of these, depending on the size and shape of your killing zone.
This whole time, I have been getting angry at my dwarves for randomly making quantum piles for no reason in absurd places. This is why that happens?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: On the strength of HFS... (Spoilers)

The first time I fought hfs, I had a few squads in full steel, composed of level 6+ military dorfs. When they failed, I drafted the rest of my peasants into an army, about 100 strong. Then, when the last of my peasants were fleeing, a goblin ambush showed up and attacked the demons. In all, 8 demons died.
Yeah.
My advice: if you're going to fight hfs with just soldiers, no traps, you need several squads of weapon lords, preferably with adamantine gear, and its generally best to engage the enemy in a mazelike cavern: the walls get in the way of their AoE attacks, making them much less deadly, and much more like fighting a whole seige of goblin elites (except a couple hundred times larger in bodysize).

DF Gameplay Questions / What does war training actually do?
« on: August 06, 2013, 10:33:29 pm »
Do war dogs have...
1. Better attributes?
2. Higher skill in biting/wrestling?
3. Are they just more aggressive?
4. Or, do they have no bonus other than allowing you to assign it to a dwarf?
5. Are there any negative effects?
Answers to these questions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
EDIT: I know the wiki says stronger, but does that mean more muscular or just better?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarves not eating- HELP!
« on: August 06, 2013, 10:20:50 pm »
The reclaim failed almost immediately, so this didn't end up being a problem, but I tried d-b-c, and I stationed a squad on top of the wagon, and it wasn't forbidden and was accessible, so I don't know what the problem was.

I really don't care what stuff there is on the embark, I try to make the best of any situation; I find that increases the fun of the game.

Plenty of bone lying around
Have you already used it all? Because bone bolts, while not quite as good as metal, are still very deadly.

Are all the overseers currently dorfed, or do we dorf ourselves on our own turn?
