(note, I send them to fight because a. my cage traps weren't reloaded yet, b) I am trying to make an interesting story here and c) I have no idea, BLOOD FOR ARMOK)

Events as they occured on 10th malachite 1251

Akroma and Zatam stood brave in the black sand. This was their new home, and they would not give in.
One of the Zombies seperated from the group as he was chasing Imp, and was clearly a good opportunity to begin the attack.
Zatam started the attack, wrestling the camel unto the ground, as Akroma started to swing his pick at the half rotten legs. his inital strikes were succesful, and 3 of the camels leg seemed even more damaged than they already were(brown wound).
However his luck abandoned him, as he failed to land any hits after the first few. Zatam started to strangle the camel, hoping to overpower it with brute force, but to no avail. The undead do not need to breath. But Zatam did.
And soon she was exhausted and gasping for air. This was when Akroma, who was still trying to get a hit on the camel made a cruel discovery. The wounds on it's legs were closing (brown wound to light grey wound(didn't know zombies do that<_< )).
Akroma's eyes widened in amazement: There was research to be done. He was so hyped that he did not notice that Zatam was making gagging noises. Her throat was a horrible view. The camel sqashed it flat, and as Zatam was falling on her knees, blood spewed from her mouth, like it was trying to flee.
Akroma realized that alone, he stood no chance, as the other Zombies were about to join the fight.
In a desperate move, he called every dwarf in the settlement for help, and to help they came.
But to no avail. One after the other proofed worthless against the undead army.

Zareth Mosos, the desert of tragey, fell.

(and again a fortress that didn't make it through the first year. Note to myself: stay the f*** away from haunted biomes)

Report on experiment 02, security level1 restricted access

Both test subjects reacted fully identical:
The meat and the plump helmet were totaly ignored, unlike the researcher who rbough the food to them. The test subjects started to attack the cage bars as soon as he neared.

Once the living rat was introduced, it was attacked viciously, by test subject SC01 and Sl01 alike. After it was killed, it's remains were left unattended.
We came to the conclusion that undead need no food.
Their motivation to attack all living creatures is still to be determined.

Akroma's log 22th hematite 1251

Today I got my hands on a beast of extraordinary viciousness. It's strong bones are white as the boulers around us, and it's fangs look like they could crush rocks. Sever metal as if it was wet paper.
A skeletal leopard.
It's strong fangs made me think, do the undead have to eat ?
Do these fangs exist to rip apart food ?
I shall make various tests about this.

I also aquired a second skeletal camel, but that wasnot my intention.
It shall be sold to the caravan that will come in 3 months.
[edit: I just remembered that selling an untamed animals causes it to break free from the cage... better not risk my luck]

Security report 004: -test subject SL01-
Test subject SL01 is to be kept in captivity all time.
Test subject SL01 may only be fed when an experiment requires it to be fed.
Should test subject SL01, or any other SC test subject ever be able to escape it's cage, it is to be neutralized immediatly.

Experiment 02, security level 1, restricted access.
Test subjects SC01 and SL01 will be confronted with various food:
-A piece of raccon meat
-A plump helmet
-A living rat

Akroma's log 27th felsite 1251

Today was the day I was going to go out and lure a skeletal camel into one of our traps. As I approached them, my hearth was racing like the war drums of the goblins. After what seemed an eternity of traveling through the sea of black sand, i found a small group, and one of them saw me. I run like I have never run in my life before.
I am still remembering what I saw at the lake, and this time it was more than just a small fish that wanted me dead.
I am making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS
I managed to capture one of them, and am now trying to bring it into the research area without alerting the other dwarves. If Kira gets to know of my research, I can concider it cancelled.

Security report 003: -test subject SC01-
Test subject SC01 is to be kept in captivity all time.
Test subject SC01 may only be fed when an experiment requires it to be fed.
Should test subject SC01, or any other SC test subject ever be able to escape it's cage, it is to be neutralized immediatly.

Report on Experiment 001, security level 1 restricted access

In the last few months, the remains of all small creatures were stored in research room 1, to test if the black sand can make a dead creature undead. The result was, that all small creatures completely rotted away before becoming an undead.

Either the sand alone has no effect, or they rot away too fast.

Akroma's log 22th felsite 1251

Aftera long time of work, which would have been much shorter if Imp was a little bit less lazy when it comes to building traps, we finished building our first line of defence.

So far we never had to deal with the udnead, but this will soon change.
As soon as the digging of the new living area for migrants is done, I will personaly be the lure to catch some of the undead in the cages. I'd rather not to, but since I am the fastest dwarf around, it sounds like a reasonable choice.

Security reprot 002: -research room 2-
This room serves the purpose of storing captured undead, as well as executing experiments on them.
Acess denied to everyone but personal of the security level 1 or higher.

Akroma's log 6th slate 1251

Today, the first plump helmets that we planted into the ground grew big enough to be harvested. I am hesitant to eat anything that grew out of this cursed ground, however I will keep all those who regularly eat these plants under close survailance.

I would have loved to use the plump helmets as test subjects, however they are the only food we can grow, and every single one is needed to keep this fortress alive.
Once we reached a certain level of self-sufficency, I shall dig out a small farming space for research purposes.

Akroma's log 27th of granite 1251

After the digging of all rooms is done, I ordered a small room to be dug out to store the remains of all animals killed by our cats.
This room will be useful in further research.

Security report 001: -Research room 1-
This room serves the purpose of storing remains of small animals, as well as housing all experiments undertaken by them.
It shall be build away from the eye of public access.
Access is denyed to everyone but personal of the security level 1 or higher.

Experiment 001: security level1- restricted access

Starting from the first day of slate 1251 to an undetermined date, all remains of small dead animals shall be stored inside research room 1.
The goal of this experiment shall be to determine wether or not animals that die after or while coming in contact with the sand of the dried up lake stay dead, or become undead after a while. The test subjects may be used for other research in the meanwhile as well.

for all the obvious reasons, elaborate this dwarf please, for he could play a role in the plot at some point

Autopsie report of test subject T01. security level 0-access to all

The test subject is a male toad, with theeth wounds in it's torso as a result of a cat attack.
The skin was still slimey and the flesh was fresh, indicating that this toad was still alive before being killed by the cat.
It was not undead.
However, it was skinny, showing an obvious malnutrition.

Akroma's log 23 granite 1251

One can sure say that I was suprised, to see this little fellow in the sand:

Just as the fireflies, it's existance here should be impossible. How can a toad live without water, how does it protect itself from the burning sun ?

It leads me to believe that that stinking lake is still here. I am sure. Out there !
Beneath the surface of the desert, and maybe beneath the surface of reality.

(i checked the wiki and it sais toads only spawn in pools. but even if it did, how did it reach the surface ?. can vermin enter from the edge of the map ? or is my theory true, and there is an underground lake somewhere towards the north of the map ?)

To my utmost discontent I see that most of the group are still seing Kira as their leader.

As of now, working forces are scarce, and we need every man we have. Jowever, his days are counted. This is my fortress, and I will not give it to him.
Eventhough he is a very good broker, I will not allow him to trade. I will work hard and surpass him on a legal way. I will become mayor, and I do not even need to "get rid of him" to get rid of him.

And even so, he shall make an interesting test-subject

horrible truth: I have no idea how to upload anything onto the map-archieve

and even so, the map is completely empty and featureless, so i won't upload it untill my fortress has grown big enough to be interesting

Akroma's log 8th granite 1251

We finished digging out the workshop area, and are now starting to move our stocks inside.

Reign on your parade set up a farming plot, but I don't know if I really want to eat what grows in this cursed sand.
The darkness of the cave is driving me mad. I have seen halls deep inside the mountains, with not the tiniest bit of light, but none were as dark as this hall is. There are no shadow running around the walls, the walls ARE the shadows.

I shall make this another point on my research list, what this sand is composed of, but as of now I am unable to conduct any research on it, I am lacking the right tools.
