DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: August 02, 2015, 07:43:09 am »
A weredeer attacked; fortunately, the only unarmed dwarves it encountered it killed outright. Then, to my delight, it returned to human form and a lone, unskilled dwarf chased it into a corner and pummeled it until the militia showed up to behead it.

Hilltop sun training continues; fewer dwarves are now nauseated by the sun, but the statue garden there is now a complete mess of cast-off rags (slowly but surely being dumped down the magma dump chute, along with hundreds of unbutcherable skeletons, to the horror of my legendary weaver, dyer, clothier and leatherworker, each of whom has lost a handful of their numerous masterpieces this way). Besides the clothes, the ground is trampled into a red dirt mess until I get around to building gold roads there (the fort is overflowing with gold), all covered in vomit and bird blood (hunters and militia (who train there) like to take pot-shots).

More dwarves become used to tragedy with every triumph I hold in the Arena of Joyous Death for Heinous Enemies of the Glorious Dwarven Way. I think that next time I hold one, I'll try and station my resident vampires atop hatches covering the magma dump chute, when they can't prey on sleeping dwarves on the way because they're all locked in the spectator area of the Arena.

I'm with malimbar04 on this. Personally, I'm just back from a df hiatus that lasted most of 2015 and the game is now refreshingly fun again. Definitely don't feel duty-bound because you're OP on a community fort--you could always hand the reins off to an active participant. Enjoy yourself, and when and if you get the urge to play again, remember that df is just like riding a bike: veering madly through fast traffic and hoping like hell you don't get run over and don't fall off and hit your head, but you feel the rush of air around you and think--no, know--that you're better than all the plebs you see walking or driving.

...I seem to have lost the thread of my remarks.

Edit: "reigns" ≠ "reins"

Me: "go kill that alligator dwarf!"
Dwarf: "Right away!" *drops Crossbow*
Me: "what are you doing?"
Dwarf: *leaves crossbow behind and starts beating the crap out of the alligator*
Me: *face palm*

Anyone with the hunting, mining or woodcutting labors active is a poor candidate for the militia, since their hidden and unchangeable civilian uniform conflicts with their military uniform. Thus, throwing down the civilian crossbow when called to duty.

If you want to anger the elves, you have to offend their ethics, not yours. To them, murder is justifiable, but cutting trees isn't. Sell them wooden products for a few years and see what happens.

Their heir might just be living in another fortress, too.

Dwarves will generally not gain any conversation experience, and seem to not get married in-fort, but through the power of parties they can still gain 'friends', 'friendly-terms' and I even saw a 'gruduge' formed between 2 of my S7s.

Marriages can happen--the trick is making sure your dorfs socialize with marriageable candidates (and are interested in marriage themselves); left alone, they just talk to whoever's around.

I have a question.

Is it possible to burrow soldiers until they almost starve to death, and then use a lever to open a door to food while they're burning much of their fat? I'm sick of my corpulent axedwarves being slow movers, and I don't want to take the time to train them.

You should be able to accomplish this simply by burrowing them in a place with no food. They won't leave the burrow unless they're starving/dying of thirst. (Or are vampires.)

Oh, I didn't know that they could leave burrows at all. Thanks for letting me know.

Burrows are really useful if you know how they work. A civilian burrow (dwarves assigned through the burrow menu) assignment means that any assignees will only take jobs inside the burrow, unless they're starving or dehydrated. Military alert burrowing means "all civilians run here now!", and finally, the military Patrol Burrow order is just what it says on the tin.

As to your fat axedwarves, training really will beef then up and boost their stats. What's actually causing them to move slowly is almost certainly lack of armor user skill--armor is heavy, and it takes a while to learn to move in it.

It's also possible that the hospitalized dwarf's leg wasn't just bruised, but got badly infected and needed to be amputated. As to the rest...traps and militia are wonderful fort protectors.

Dear Human Merchants:
I think my Human language is a bit rusty, because when you say you're "still unloading" and "will be ready soon", it seems evident that you mean "coming to the depot by swimming across the lake" and "dragging your poor pack animals behind you".

Dear Overseer Kalista,

I don't hear you complaining about our methods when you buy the wagonload of fresh fish we catch. You didn't think we somehow transported all that fish all the way from the ocean to your fort without its rotting, did you? Fish has an extremely short shelf life, you know.

Yours sincerely,
Ise Shellbanks, Human Fishmonger Merchant

The Forgotten Beast Nunóre has come!  A huge ceratopsid with external ribs. It has a round shell and it belches and croaks.  Its slate gray scales are small and overlapping. Beware its noxious secretions!

Inod Reigncoal the Tooth of Bridging earned the title "Nunóre's Bane" for making short work of the creature. Meanwhile, on the hilltop, a handful of dwarves have finally overcome their cave adaptation! Of course, the statue garden is still covered with vomit, and most of the party-goers are still continually nauseated by the sun. They dance around the corpse of a stork, determined not to actually look at it.

I'd like to take a turn, please.

Also, if the adventurer ever gets horribly crippled or succeeds in his great work, a good way to end his career would be to take a cue from Caligula and declare war on the sea...specifically, that evil ocean in the northeast.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: forgotten demand

They can both forget demands *and* give up on mandates. The difference is that demands are harmless even if you have lawdwarves, whereas ignoring mandates will lead to police brutality if you set up the Guard.
