There are two utilities that do this already - dumping the game log as a raw text file in real time is gold standard for third party utility support, so there's nothing more for Toady to do. Sorry for the formatting below, it's not great on a phone.

DFmon is windows specific and overpowered / unpolished; while it also overlays the lower border there are some issues.

DF announcement filter is cross platform in Java, and a lot less likely to interfere with something else like DFmon often does. Comparatively weak, but updating frequently so far (once)   http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=130030

Both of these are very new and only likely to improve with time.

For any other keybindings, they're stored in a file called dfhack.init in the Dwarf Fortress folder for all the scripts and plugins. Standard keybindings are under data/init folder iirc but there's less call to look up those, since the in game menu is more readable.

Utilities and 3rd Party Applications / Re: Stonesense: New release!

At this point, it's just barely working, ... I don't think it's quite ready for testing.  I don't know how much time I'll have this week, but I'll try to get something done next weekend.

So, it's already past proof-of-concept and into early alpha, with hopes of a version that's not hilariously broken before the next DF update?  Wow, that's actually a lot better than I would have expected.  As long as there's no crashing bugs, difficult to use is no barrier for a DF UI improvement!

You'd need to set up symlinks not shortcuts - I think, I just stick the whole thing on dropbox since I only have windows.

There are now Lazy Newb Packs available for Windows (updated), Mac, and there's even an alpha of a Linux build (direct download link!) - it should be available on DFFD in the next few days.  All of them include dfhack and as many compatible utilities and graphics packs as possible.

Gonna need to run a battery of tests to get all the little worries worked out, but it's working, and that's the main thing.

HOLY-   is it possible for me to test this?  It would be just about the ultimate interface for newbies...  Falconne, I suppose mousequery won't work with this - but buildingplanner etc would?

Posting to watch very closely and with great interest.

you can get more info from the DFHack readme - it doesn't cover everything though, just the standard stuff.  Still a very useful page.

You're missing the configuration file - did you delete anything?  The relevant parts of that message are the non-indented parts, so...

This can be fixed (for this version) by pasting the following into a file called "lnp.yaml", in the LNP folder.

PTW, this looks great.  Between this and The Gazelle's gamelog parsing stuff, maybe we should launch a campaign to have best practise for scripts that insert announcements to also write to the gamelog.

Quote
the left side is not used for anything
It does flag availability of combat, sparring, and hunting reports, but there's plenty of room below that.

Edit:  after playing around with it for a bit:
 - Is there some way to define a relative path, for newb-friendly-ness in my LNP?
 - I noticed that the minibar (heh) was often off by a few pixels both vertically and horizontally, playing windowed and non-maximised
 - If there's some way of setting the minibar to stay just above DF rather than everything, that would be good - it seems weird/hackish when it stays above eg Therapist as well
 - The big window adds new stuff to the top, not the bottom; this is the reverse of the convention everywhere else (eg stock announcements)

1959
I'd actually love to see a way to stick combat reports into a separate column, so the wouldn't get so jumbled up; and finer colour control would be pretty useful.

I got '<citizen> has organised a party at <furniture>', which didn't display.  Another filter?  It was light green, BTW.  Likewise '<citizen> has created <artifact>'; yellow.  Deaths, light purple.

The settings pane needs to be resizeable or preferably in the same window, it's currently fixed higher than my screen which is a bit of a problem.

Here's the settings.txt I've got at the moment, with most of the colours filled in.

DF Modding / Re: Community Mods and utilities list.

The Macnewbie pack has had a similar third-party update to my LNP - worth including.

There's a new cross-platform LNP gui - note though that this is only the gui, and includes no contents - complete packs based on it include (so far) my expanded LNP and fricy's MacNewbie reborn above; there's an open call for someone to maintain a Linux LNP.

My expanded LNP has also recently 'come of age', in that I feel it's a stable and established alternative to the classic LNP; #4 DLs/day could be an early spike, but #9 and rising for all-time most downloads on DFFD counts for something.  However, I'd not want the link to the classic version removed entirely - maybe something like '[Expanded Lazy Newb Pack], an updated and much expanded version of the outdated [classic LNP]'?

ResMar has created an excellent userguide for Splinterz DT (here).

There are two great new graphics packs too; Obsidian and Spacefox

I think that's all; I'll probably remember other stuff I stuck in my LNP that's not listed later.

Have a look at data/init/announcements.txt, you can disable and enable what you want to show up. If you disable all, there wont be announcements. Dont know if the announcement ticker will still recognize them though.

I tried deleting all instances of D_D or D_DISPLAY "the announcement will be displayed in the main dwarf announcement log (and at the bottom)" - while this did prevent them popping up at the bottom, they also never make it into the gamelog, so it's a self-defeating kind of move.  The same tag controls the ticker and the gamelog, hence the hack-question.

Lol @ vanilla feature interfering with tool feature, kind of makes me want to say "back in my day..." :D
Heh, I started playing in 0.31; the various tools were what got me back into 0.34.  Automation and UI improvement; most of the complaints I hear are solved by various hacks and that's why I started my LNP.

Does anyone know of or have a way to turn off the announcement ticker at the bottom of the screen?

Besides the aesthetic issues, I also find that it often covers the happiness stats and generally gets annoying eventually.  There's also this lovely new announcement tool, which displays a filterable and configurable view of the gamelog and combat reports in another window - and it would be nice if it was possible to disable the default when using it.

1963
Sounds like we all have no idea about the colours... if I find a list I'll post again, but don't' hold your breath or anything.

My suggestion about combat reports was kinda a two-parter:
 - indent them, so it's obvious what is a combat report and what isn't; and
 - allow for filtering of combat reports, to (eg) remove lines about 'the X vomits/retches'; for much the same reasons as cancel-spam.

I might head over to the dfhack thread, and ask if anyone knows of a way to disable the announcement ticker along the bottom of the screen.  That's a completely different project, but obviously complementary if someone else pulls it off - and it worked to get the log-region script, so who knows.

The link is available in the 'links' menu of the new LNP - the file just called 'readme' is for that program, rather than the whole pack.  It's a little confusing but to change it further would be difficult to maintain; I can give the other readme a better name though (thanks for the feedback).

The OP of this thread is listed as last active 29 May, and there's not much that can be done; only Toady or ThreeToe can change it and they tend to have a hands-off policy.  Basically I just hope that people check the end of this thread, and if I find a link back here somewhere I try to get it changed.

For newbies:  here's the updated version for windows, and the OP is out of date to claim windows-only - here's a Mac edition

DFFD seems to be a standard, so while it works I'll stick there.  I could just remove Fortress Overseer - it's a massive and still alpha package at ~30MB - but for now using 7zip in zip format is working.  I'll consider various other options when I need them.

Dfterm could actually turn DF into something server-farm-scalable, which would be all kinds of interesting.  Similar issues with this pack for now, if the included stuff is actually used.
