Life Advice / Re: The Generic Computer Advice Thread
« on: July 14, 2014, 05:45:13 pm »
Hello, A while ago I bought a small Trust Mini tablet and I decided to used it on my Windows 8.1 computer. However, the drivers seem to be obsolete and causing problems(at one point I got a blue screen equivalent). I have stopped using the device however the driver still runs in the background, which slows down my system significantly. Unfortunately there is no uninstall program and now I have a serious problem. I have found driver sys files related to the program in the drivers folder but I am hesitant to delete them in case it damages the system. It is very important these are removed but I am not sure how to do this safely.

Can you help me?

Life Advice / Re: How to build and keep at larger projects
« on: July 13, 2014, 05:53:40 pm »
Actually about a year ago I made a very small demo of a roguelike with PDCurses and while to be honest the code is far from complex and the code is meh at best but it does handle drawing a map and other basic things in a game even if it isn't particually efficient and isn't actually a game. Evidently I do use a form of Git.

You can see the code here

I think I will begin looking at C++ as I have nearly 2 months with almost nothing to do.

Seems like false positives, had it a day and nothing has changed with regard to background programs and suspected malware from malware bytes. It is annoying I have Mcafee on my laptop, would get something like kaspersky or bulldog but I don't have the money at the moment.

Great game by the way.

Just installed this. I assume it is normal for mcaffe to go nuts. It seems fine.

Life Advice / How to build and keep at larger projects
« on: July 12, 2014, 03:45:33 pm »
Hello, I am a programmer and have around 5 years of experience programming as a hobby. Everything I have made up to this point has a maximum of about 5 source files in my language of choice, C. I think that I have gotten the degree of practice necessary to develop something a bit bigger but I am not sure how I can reliably design and implement something complex like a full roguelike or something internet based.

What it would be nice to know is how I can go about designing and managing these larger projects and hopefully getting something more complex out of it than what I have done up to this point. The second part of the question is how should I go about keeping momentum on projects? It seems that after around a week of programming most days I run out of steam and the project comes to a halt and is never worked on again. This is depressing so It would be nice to get some pointers from people that have worked on larger scale projects on how to keep going.

Thanks for answering in advance.

The wake island map is great, especially when you deploy a minigun turret in cover near to the airbase. Absolute AI massacre.

[For those who did the 10 day, requests for a short intro to your program will be coming shortly]

So now all of the 72 hour projects have been submitted for definite, I think it is time that I set up a seperate thread for voting for which you feel is the best. We have at 5 projects that have been entered for the programming jam, we had 2 failures (1 is declared by Jiharo, another by Captain hammer, as it seems to be an endless menu if the repo I got was correct). I have managed to get a few paragraphs off the people who have made them which talk about their game.

First of all, we have Team Jurrassic Pancake's "Creation : A story of depression, anxiety and achievement". To play the web version you can go here and you can see the source code here

Second of all we have Jiharo's 'failed' Collectable card game. You can get and compile the source code from here

Thirdly we have Sebbu's entry for a console utility for unix based shells for environmental variables. You can get and compile it from here

Lastly, we have my moddable text based rpg game, AWOG 2, a sequel to AWOG. You can get the source code and windows + linux makefiles here
You can get a Win64 (and probably win32 as well, although not tested) version here

Spoiler: Some details (click to show/hide)

So which do you think is the best of these? Please vote in the poll above to show your opinion. For at least mine and Jiharo's entry and have intention to compile you will at least want to have your platform's curses library installed, on windows this is pdcurses and linux ncurses-dev.

The 10 day is coming shortly provided there is more than one entrant.

To be honest It is great value for the current price already especially considering the new total conversion mods you can look at.

Yeah, the thread just seems to have died.

Still great now with a golden desert eagle!

I have three more games to put on the list from humble bundle leftovers (some more may be coming shortly as well):

Bioshock 1
Bioshock 2

Spec Ops the Line

Having played through all three in my controversial opinion I think spec ops was the best.

Also Binding of Isaac + Wrath of Lamb has at long last been given away!

Dependant on connectors you have and space in the case the R9 270 is good. I play Planetside 2 on maximum at 1080p with a lesser cpu than that (although for some reason it feels like the game is lying to me).

After the 10th.

EDIT : Also waiting for captain hammer.
