Hello

I am planning on starting to learn some network programming with WinSock. However, I don't want to have to open sockets on my router and such but would like to test the programs. Is there a program which can emulate a LAN on one computer so I can see if the programs work, so I don't have to open ports on my router and play around with my other computers(some which run Linux, which I understand has different network architecture).

That's good, it is quite under powered but at least has a dual core. Setting it up now and will give ip when ready. I have dynamic ip so server browser will eventually  be your best bet.

Why not just buy a new hard drive? They aren't particularly expensive even if it is out of date like a PATA one.

Unfortunately while I understand the limitations of wifi in the case of the laptop there is no alternative because as much as I want a 15m long ethernet cable upstairs to where I store It I cannot.

Luckily however, I tested out the desktop and it is alright now to be used 24/7.
