DF Suggestions / Menu Navigation Shortcut
« on: January 24, 2016, 10:25:30 pm »
So, as I was scrolling through the stocks menu, I was struck with this really cool idea.
In fact, this is something I wish would be utilized a lot more in every day programs. Or at least, based off this idea.

When you are going through large menus and need to scroll up and down all the time, it does get tiring. Sure, it's only about 10 down the list. but something that would really make this better, I think anyway, would be the addition to hold control and have a letter appear next to every option, a for the first, b for the second, c for the third, etc

Solution?
So if I hold Control and press h, my cursor will jump to the 8th line in this menu. This would just make using the stock page, and the units page, so more intuitive to use.

Sounds really minor, but as a pure vim user, repeatedly pressing up or down to get to a line I want, just gets a little frustrating. I'm sure many people would find this at least a little more helpful.

God, I wish I could find a linux feature where pressing the menu key next to rAlt or right clicking lettered every option for general programs, that would be amazing.

What do you guys think?

DF Suggestions / Re: Clothes Stockpile (Torn)

Okay, cheers.
Glad to hear there is future plans.
Still, this suggestion would be a nice for a future update I think. No reason it couldn't be implemented.

But thanks for the tips guys, I'll set that up right away.

I haven't tried it, but don't the stockpile quality settings help?
Or is a worn masterwork still a masterwork?
Still a masterwork.

The solution I use is having one clothing stockpile that takes from workshops, and another for everything else (junk.)

That sounds really promising. My concern is, does this mean dwarves will actually pick up the clothes strewn around in bedrooms and place it into the general (junk) stockpile?

DF Suggestions / Clothes Stockpile (Torn)

Yep, title pretty much says it.

A stockpile that takes all those x torn socks would make clothing soooo much easier to handle, honestly.

Right now it's hell, and we all have our own ways of handling them. I personally set up a garbage zone next to the trade caravan, and have to use stocks to dump every single x torn clothe at the start of each season, claim them and then trade them. It's easier to trade em because it's all the clothes 3 blocks from the caravan. But still, this means no barrels and still is an annoying way to sort them.

I think, something similar to the food storage where you press 'u' to enable/disable prepared meals.
This could enable/disable ruined clothing, of x quality or less.

2128) You have dreams of your fortress in ASCII every night. You see ASCII characters in the clouds. You see Constellations of ASCII characters when you go stargazing.

6
Armok bestowed the spell of haste onto all pickaxes made by the dwarves

Why do marksdwarves like to run at the enemy instead of shoot when possible?

7
Ohh goddd, yesssss
Dwarf Fortress (Of course) + Warband
Dwarfband Fortress anyone?

A game where you generate an incredibly complicated world, with huge depth, and lots of factions.
I'd imagine a world the size and scope of Dwarf Fortress
The graphics and gameplay of Warband

Fantasy setting?

I'd hire a tonne of elvish archers (Cause I love archers), a bunch of Human Knights and a a load of Dwarvish Infantry

You'd need a million dollar computer to handle the game :P But welp. Trust me, it'd be worth it any time.

DF General Discussion / Re: Why are you NOT a DF master?
« on: August 19, 2015, 12:50:08 am »
What is considered a master?

After only about 2 years of failing, I now manage to get almost every fortress up and running to at least be self sustainable.
Farms, near surface in dirt. Workshops, metal industries, and cooks/brewers/livestock.
I can use my military somewhat competently (Though I'm not sure how the schedules really work, I just have everyone training)
A small squad of crossbowdwarves (about 4 to 6) always training will quickly get to great skills and take out beasts (From the caverns) that attack (from my past experiences) and then axedwarves train on the weaker targets relatively safely.
I've manage to get a working well inside my hospital a few times.

I've also never touched minecarts, lye/soap/dyes, cheese making and most of farming
I just Fish, Gather, Butchur (rarely hunt), Cook and Brew

Never gone near Adamantine or Hell or anything
(Bar once where I dug straight stairs as far down as I could once passing caverns and well, right above huge sea's of magma to place forges out of interest
Where Imps killed all my dwarves)

Get drunk and organize a party at the local well.

What would Urist do if he fell down the well?

Hey guys.
I'm actually playing a lot of the older Dwarf Fortress 34.11
And I'm sort of new ish to Linux. I was wondering if someone could help me to get Dwarf Therapist working with the older version of DF.
I've never understood how this makefile thing works with qt-4 and stuff.
What would I download for this to work, and what would I do with the download?
Could I get it done with the splintermind version? I remember getting this to work a couple of weeks back but it wasn't letting me change proffession names and stuff.
Thanks, any help is much appreciated.

11
Yes. Of course.

Anyway, I think it might be solved.
I just installed i7z as someone else said other programs will not show the core running past it's non turbo limit. And I ran DF and with i7z and saw it spike up to just over 3000 every so often on core 1 or 2. So I guess it;s working according to this program.

12
So I need to activate the turbo in the bios? And it only works when plugged in? Thats good.
I always plug in my laptop and take the battery out when using it for extended periods of time, generally for DF and use the battery when going out to places to write or code.
And your DF will make use of the turbo?
And I can check the frequency. I have Conky running. A friend on Skype is showing me all the ways to personalize my Linux.

Edit: How would I go about enabling turbo boost? No such option shows in the Bios. It is an Asus.
Everywhere I look, I hear it is enabled by default. So something is really wrong here.

13
Thanks for that.

Any tips on getting it to run at the full 3.1GHz as the turbo speed is at 3.1Ghz?

14
So, to begin with, this here is my laptop.
http://www.computeralliance.com.au/asus-p550lav-xx787g-15.6-core-i7-notebook-windows-7/8.1-pro

So, I have installed Linux Mint Cinnamon and gotten Dwarf Fortress to work with Dwarf Therapy. No small task, as I am new to Linux.
Anyway, I finally found I can run
cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep "MHz"
To test the speed of my cores.. (That the way to put it) and it came up with
cpu MHz      : 2000.000
cpu MHz      : 754.000
cpu MHz      : 754.000
cpu MHz      : 754.000

And so I am correct in assuming the 2000.000 is the 2ghz? I heard DF uses the most it can from one core, so... here's a few questions.
First off, I am correct in understanding it shows 4 CPU's as there is 2 threads per core? (It's only a duel core)
(Which is a shame cause if DF only uses 1 thread, I could have just looked for a really powerful single core?)

I wanted a duel so that 1 core for DF and one for background tasks (Never knew there was 2 thread per core, mate told me when I asked him why it's showing 4)
But with a single core, 1 thread could be focused on background tasks and 1 thread on DF... :( Now there is 2 threads going to waste?

So anyway my first real important question is this. If DF uses as much resources as it can while it can.. and the  Intel Core i7 4510U 2.0GHz (4M Cache, up to 3.1GHz)
Well I got told, the processor will boost from 2.0 to 3.1 when it needs to. So... Shouldn't DF be boosting it to 3.1? Or was this all just a waste of money? Anyway to make DF used all 3100 MHz? Cause if it's just gonna use the 2.0 GHz then.. I should have just stuck with my old laptop, which I think was a 2.3GHz Duel core. Then again this has 8Gb RAM and the other 4.

Another question. I brought an SSD hard drive which should make DF faster right? Especially when saving and loading?

I'm sorry. Am really quite new to Hardware.
Am loving this laptop though. Boots up and shuts down in literally 3 seconds flat. It's meant to be for my writing, and for DF.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

DF General Discussion / Re: What you want (Related to DF)
« on: July 27, 2014, 04:39:52 pm »
I want a full, hard cover copy, of the Hall of Legends, aswell as Boatmurdered, and Askist Nakath.
Of course, I too would love to have a hard copy of either of those.
Also, what is Askist Nakath? I've tried google, and even searching the forums. nothing..
