DF Suggestions / Menu Navigation Shortcut
« on: January 24, 2016, 10:25:30 pm »
So, as I was scrolling through the stocks menu, I was struck with this really cool idea.
In fact, this is something I wish would be utilized a lot more in every day programs. Or at least, based off this idea.

When you are going through large menus and need to scroll up and down all the time, it does get tiring. Sure, it's only about 10 down the list. but something that would really make this better, I think anyway, would be the addition to hold control and have a letter appear next to every option, a for the first, b for the second, c for the third, etc

Solution?
So if I hold Control and press h, my cursor will jump to the 8th line in this menu. This would just make using the stock page, and the units page, so more intuitive to use.

Sounds really minor, but as a pure vim user, repeatedly pressing up or down to get to a line I want, just gets a little frustrating. I'm sure many people would find this at least a little more helpful.

God, I wish I could find a linux feature where pressing the menu key next to rAlt or right clicking lettered every option for general programs, that would be amazing.

What do you guys think?

DF Suggestions / Clothes Stockpile (Torn)
« on: September 30, 2015, 02:11:14 pm »
Yep, title pretty much says it.

A stockpile that takes all those x torn socks would make clothing soooo much easier to handle, honestly.

Right now it's hell, and we all have our own ways of handling them. I personally set up a garbage zone next to the trade caravan, and have to use stocks to dump every single x torn clothe at the start of each season, claim them and then trade them. It's easier to trade em because it's all the clothes 3 blocks from the caravan. But still, this means no barrels and still is an annoying way to sort them.

I think, something similar to the food storage where you press 'u' to enable/disable prepared meals.
This could enable/disable ruined clothing, of x quality or less.

So, to begin with, this here is my laptop.
http://www.computeralliance.com.au/asus-p550lav-xx787g-15.6-core-i7-notebook-windows-7/8.1-pro

So, I have installed Linux Mint Cinnamon and gotten Dwarf Fortress to work with Dwarf Therapy. No small task, as I am new to Linux.
Anyway, I finally found I can run
cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep "MHz"
To test the speed of my cores.. (That the way to put it) and it came up with
cpu MHz      : 2000.000
cpu MHz      : 754.000
cpu MHz      : 754.000
cpu MHz      : 754.000

And so I am correct in assuming the 2000.000 is the 2ghz? I heard DF uses the most it can from one core, so... here's a few questions.
First off, I am correct in understanding it shows 4 CPU's as there is 2 threads per core? (It's only a duel core)
(Which is a shame cause if DF only uses 1 thread, I could have just looked for a really powerful single core?)

I wanted a duel so that 1 core for DF and one for background tasks (Never knew there was 2 thread per core, mate told me when I asked him why it's showing 4)
But with a single core, 1 thread could be focused on background tasks and 1 thread on DF... :( Now there is 2 threads going to waste?

So anyway my first real important question is this. If DF uses as much resources as it can while it can.. and the  Intel Core i7 4510U 2.0GHz (4M Cache, up to 3.1GHz)
Well I got told, the processor will boost from 2.0 to 3.1 when it needs to. So... Shouldn't DF be boosting it to 3.1? Or was this all just a waste of money? Anyway to make DF used all 3100 MHz? Cause if it's just gonna use the 2.0 GHz then.. I should have just stuck with my old laptop, which I think was a 2.3GHz Duel core. Then again this has 8Gb RAM and the other 4.

Another question. I brought an SSD hard drive which should make DF faster right? Especially when saving and loading?

I'm sorry. Am really quite new to Hardware.
Am loving this laptop though. Boots up and shuts down in literally 3 seconds flat. It's meant to be for my writing, and for DF.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

DF General Discussion / What you want (Related to DF)
« on: July 15, 2014, 02:08:47 am »
So I was just talking to my mate who I randomly said to. You know what I want? I want a leather trench coat with that dwarf from my desktop background on it. And well, he made an image of it.
No i keep gazing at it when bored and realized how much I want this.

DF General Discussion / Running on Linux (So New Here)
« on: February 17, 2014, 05:11:27 am »
So, I have just installed Linux Mint for the first time ever installing Linux on a separate laptop. I thought it would be a nice change. Honestly, I generally have crazy ideas to do this sort of thing. At once, I downloaded Dwarf Fortress and CataclysmDDA linux builds and put them on the desktop.
Now, I have no idea how to even run them...  :(
I'm so new to Linux and would love to learn it, and I figured here would be the best place to ask...
So, if anyone could please help me out here, it would be greatly appreciated.

DF General Discussion / A New Beginning
« on: April 23, 2013, 11:52:29 pm »
A new Beginning

I've started playing Dwarf Fortress not too long ago, but over the last couple of months, I've started understanding what has been going on, quite naturally. Now, I can vaguely monitor my dwarfs just by watching where they run and what they do and just by pressing the U button regularly I can make sure they are on task.
In fact, I'm still new to the game, I haven't managed to get a self sustainable Fortress yet. But I'm certainly getting further each time. I've lost a lot but then again (Losing is Fun) : )
I'm about to start a whole new world, where I can start fresh, and will strive harder then before to succeed, cause now, When I'm not at school, or typing away at my creative writing, I'm generally found to be on Dwarf Fortress.
I have to call this the Best Game I've ever found. Even better then the good ol x-com (original) and Clonks games. Too bad my mates won't play it. I guess the game just isn't for some people.
Still, I'm having a blast on this. My favorite thing to do now when I want to be alone is fire up Dwarf Fortress, listening to music and watching them dig away at the rock. It's strangely calming.
Hey is it true the next update is estimated to be around 20 years? Lol, I read that somewhere but sure it was a joke...
Has anyone got some tips, like how to handle caverns? I dug into it, with Four rookie wrestlers (I didn't bring any military equipment with me) standing guard at the bottom. A bunch of Tigermen came at me, doing almost no damage, my Dwarves were wrestling them to death no problem, but it turned out the Cave Crocodile was a huge problem.
Eventually it died and I was left with 3 Dwarves, one a Legendary miner from the wave of immigrants that arrived during that battle. I used him to dig out the river, was hoping to flood the hallow beneath me, Gears of War style, but failed. It hit winter as the river slowly flowed towards my Fort, through a long thin tunnel, it froze.
So yeah, any tips on how to handle caverns? Haha, I've noted to bring Copper Greaves, Chestplates and Short Swords next time.
