Somehow, I can't help but feel unlucky with this one. That is the last time I buy large quantities of Rope reed cloth from the caravan!
EDIT: Oh, and this will soon not be a problem. Toady will be changing magma vents to replenish slowly.

Its the carp you need to worry about.
Once you have the pick, you have rock and you have magma that can be channeled to magma workshops, negating the need for coal and the fourth wood to start smelting that coal.
Also, if you have magma as well as sand, plants and metal on the map, you can get away without the extra wood.
Maybe when fighting during world creation gets added, most of them will be burnt down.
