Just popping in to say I'm back to playing this mod on a Jaguarman adventurer. I'm basically a Kaijit Dovahkin from Skyrim, but without the shouts and other magic. I'm the head of a guard force working out of Magicfurnace and we've killed two lesser dragons, a cyclops, a gorlak, and one human bandit clan. The only kills I personally made so far are five humans, but I call myself a Dovahkin because I decked my character out in lesser dragon scales, and lesser dragon skulls. Like a dragonskull helmet AND a dragonskull mask. It's hilarious. Dragonscale armor, and dragonscale high boots, too. I'm dual wielding a shale ax and a dragontooth long sword.

Probably instantly. Economy update.

I figured it would either be not at all, or in a random way. I go back to waiting quietly for the next update, and the ones after that.

Now the question becomes, "What is the point in that?" I mean, I can see making your own home and adding in a vault for coins to trade with, but do goods cycle in Adventure mode? If I do this sort of thing and over time use the profit to buy out the local berry supply, is it going to replenish?

You can make the fortress as big as you want. Heck, take over all three layers of caverns even. You can dig out and expand the ones you have, and if there's a river anywhere on the map you can do some engineering to mud up the dry ground so plants grow everywhere.

On the prejudice side of things . . . as long as there's no absolute trends, there isn't an issue. Don't tie prejudice just to species or color. Add in all kinds of prejudiced traits, both physical and mental. And give high speakers the ability to change peoples' minds about said prejudice. It's only when you make something highly likely to happen that it becomes a problem. Heck, give these prejudices a logical underpinning, even. I'm sure the original cases of racism back when we were all primitives stemmed from competition for resources. The modern stuff came from a lot of different sources, depending on where you are. The Southern style in the states was boosted by black slaves taking over jobs that free whites were paid to do beforehand. And then further amplified on purpose by the slave owners as a way to keep the slaves from getting freed earlier.

It's a lot of work, so I don't blame Toady for not getting into it. Just, if the systems come into place for it as a natural consequence of development, think about it?

Leopard Seals are big, and that dwarf has an amazing "I am so done with this shit" look.

I stand corrected. Big seals.

Are you sure a leopard seal man would be bigger than a dwarf?

Yup. A single artist, unchained by a corporate marketing department, can keep building the game for a long time. As long as it's stable enough to play by the end of each mini-cycle, you'll pretty much get a new game out of every release.

Cutting stuff into blocks before building has the most authentic feel to it. The obsidian casting shenanigans are what a gamer does, not what real dwarves would do.  ;D

Yes and no. For the record, I do things block by block so I can make changes if needed (plus I don't deal in pumps very often), but if magma/lava worked like it does in the game, in real life, I can't see any reason they wouldn't look into obsidian casting.

ETA: I might eventually try my hand at ice casting.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: The first anvil
« on: August 31, 2017, 07:25:31 am »
In current versions it was either a strange mood or else Armok left a single perfect anvil in the world and the first dwarven civilization found it, and began using it to make copies of itself.

In reality there's intended to be a point in development where the game gets granular enough to be like Gnomoria. In that one you use a log and a stone to make your initial workshop and you build up from there. So we'll probably see a point where you can use a firesafe boulder to craft rudimentary metal implements like anvils.

I might download and play the new version on its first day, but I probably won't be serious about actually playing until a few patches down the road. Especially since I started a fortress yesterday and am working out the bugs in a new design.

I am curious to see what major changes come out during the fixing stage. I remember us getting the psychology rewrite. That was during a patch, rather than a major release.

Probably by Christmas. In fact, if I were Toady, I might hold it until Christmas as a gift for my loyal fans.

Is it possible to wrestle and pull someone while retaining your grip, pulling them along with you?
If you can fly (I'm currently enjoying the advantages of being a peregrine falcon man), can you pull them up with you?
That would be great - swoop down into a group of goblins, grab one, and abduct him into the air to deal with him somewhere else.

Just a heads up, a peregrine falcon man isn't likely to be picking a goblin up. Animal people are an average between the animal and person that's combined. So that particular creature will probably have to settle for raking peoples' faces with their claws. Still a brutal attack, and certainly worth the effort. Just not a lift.

That makes the lack of tusks make sense. Thank you for the clarification.

Other than size, the differences between elephant seals and walruses are the noses and lack of tusks. To a casual observer at least. Obviously someone more intent would have picked it up earlier. I just didn't think of elephant seal.
