DF General Discussion / Re: Was version .40 a bust ?
« on: December 09, 2015, 05:37:38 pm »
I've had one fortress die of starvation. The rest? Settle in soil and dig out a farming chamber. Set a few people to fieldwork and you'll have enough crops to keep going in food and booze forever. Long as you don't cook the plants. It takes a little bit of micromanagement to run at first, but once you set it, you'll be good to go. That's not including the surface and cave plants you can harvest.

Version .40 wasn't bad, it just didn't have as much to do as the current one does.

The barfights are probably intentional consequences of the deepened personality system. The silk stuff either fixed this time, or more likely will be fixed with 42.03. There's a workaround mentioned on one of the devlogs from the past few days, if you don't mind modding. The armor stuff will also be fixed with 42.03.

I haven't run into any bugs other than the armor one.

No problem. Always fun helping folks out.

Draw area over? I'm not talking about meeting areas or anything. You set the bedroom as normal, and then you can hit l (from the q menu of the bedroom) and it'll bring up a list of locations. Just assign it from there and it'll count. Then you just wait until you have petitioners and when you accept them, they'll claim a room when they get tired. No one else should, far as I know.

635
You have to use q on the bed, set it as a bedroom, then hit l and assign it to the tavern. If it's not assigned, then it doesn't count. Even if it is within the tavern's territory.

636
Not if you tie them to the tavern. Tavern rooms are specifically meant for outsiders. Your people might enjoy the tavern, but they're not going to claim rooms within it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: The Book Thread
« on: December 09, 2015, 03:15:29 pm »
Anything that's bound is counted as a book. I'm also pretty sure 1 page doesn't mean 1 squiggle.  :P I've never built a library yet. The one fortress I had that even tried making paper wound up falling to a weremole.

638
If you make each bed a bedroom and assign those rooms to the tavern, petitioners will stay there.

Has anyone had a fortress last long enough to see long term residents become citizens?

Up x 4 No, no. The best way to get people to read books isn't with a book. It's by making an adventurer who values books and can argue well, and having them go to your fortress to argue all the non-readers into becoming readers. Bonus points if you can make your adventurer a writer as well. Then you can write the books you want them to read, and then browbeat them into reading them. You know, like every Catholic nun teaching in a religious school ever.  :P

So about that whole "Can't assign labors to permanent residents" thing, it sounds like it's a chance thing. Going by the D_Init file, there's mention of both permanent employment, and full citizenship. So it sounds like in the beginning of the arrangement, they're there strictly for one purpose. After a while, it sounds like they could get more.

Might be worth doing Science on.

They're procedurally generated, so the names are just random. Where parts are made will probably be different between worlds, too. It depends on the material involved.

642
It depends entirely on the circumstances of the Fort. If it's meant to be a regular big fortress, then I might get sadistic a little. Although it's more carelessness than anything else. If it's a natural growth fort (soft cap keeps migrants out and hard cap allows a lot of children) then I'm more fussy about protecting my dwarves and their emotions.

The worst I've gotten was a relatively recent fortress where I designated specific dwarves as victims and dropped them down a pit to train the medical staff. Which then got overflowed when an export ban got violated and then a Dragon burned the surface so I quit because of FPS issues.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: The Essence of Dwarfiness

I'm one of the boring but practical people. The only dwarfy thing I've done was set up a drop-pit and use it to injure some of my own people so the hospital staff could gain practice.

And then I found out I didn't even need to for two reasons: 1.) Malpractice is not a thing (or at least wasn't in that fort) and 2.) I am fully capable of accidentally making people get hurt just by having a justice system with a functioning hammerer and getting surprise export bans after the trading's already been done but before the caravan actually leaves.

644
I know. I still want it. :P Worse case I can mod in the reverse. Playing as Elves and having Dwarves settle.

645
Sorry, I still want goblin and elven butchers in my fortresses who can commit sentient-butchery to get rid of the masses of dead sentients in my corpse piles.
