DF Modding / Re: Living Weapons - [WIP]
« on: November 14, 2013, 12:23:11 am »
But so far it seems that the biggest problems are their size, which leads to them getting knocked away easily, and the fact that the gems that grant them life are both brittle and easy to target.
Being able to easily knock away a floating sword sounds fairly realistic to me.
So does having the gem being brittle, but it probably should be harder to target.
Have you considered adding another body part such as a guard, and having the gem be inside it with the [UNDER_PRESSURE] tag, so you would break open the guard, and expose the gem?

Overall, I like the idea.

I've changed it from [EMBEDDED] to [INTERNAL] before posting it, which should make it harder to damage, now that it isn't exposed to the surface. Though I could easily add a guard to improve the gem's defenses by adding a body detail plan that wraps the guard around the handle.

I'm not sure how [UNDER_PRESSURE] could work though, since that may make the gem trail behind the weapon like guts, unless there is some way to control the trail.

Glad to hear you like it!

DF Modding / [For V.0.34.11] Living Weapons - V.0.5 [WIP]
« on: November 13, 2013, 11:56:41 pm »
I know that it's been a while since I've promised these, but I have created animated weapons.

http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=8136

Currently it's just a long sword, axe, spear, and war hammer. They all have a gem within their hilt that, if destroyed, will kill the weapon. Separating their handle from their offensive end will also cause death. They all have a base skill with their weapon, as well as a minor skill in dodging, and can be tamed and war-trained with no risk of reverting to wild.

They will not be found in the wild, or as domesticated pets of civilizations. However, they can be created at an Animator's Forge. You will need to create the four components of a weapon; the handle, the crossguard, the weapon's "head", and the gem that will give the weapon life. When these components are added together within the workshop, they will spawn the weapon of your choice. The weapons can be slaughtered to reclaim the materials that were used to create them.

Weapons currently come in three materials, which are iron, steel, and adamantine.

Spoiler: Changelog (click to show/hide)

If anyone finds any bugs or has any ideas or suggestions that they would like to see, feel free to let me know.

You've only stated what tissues go where, you haven't actually added them.

Try adding these, and let us know if it helps.

It doesn't help that resurrecting him will cause him to die of old age a second time.

It's been several days, and I still haven't received an activation e-mail for an account I made for the Dwarf Fortress File Depot.

Should I contact the admin?

E: Tried resetting the password, which apparently you can do even before activating the account. It said that it had sent me an e-mail with my new password, but I haven't received it.

It takes me forever to remember people's names. I can remember faces after seeing them once, though.

This. Though I've forgotten names immediately after being introduced to people before, and have even forgotten names of people I know quite well.

Oh shit.

I'd watch the hell out of Let's Learn Judo with Vladimir Putin.

Nothing happens once world-generation ends, outside of what your forts and your adventurers do. But as mentioned, this will change next version.

There is a death age for most creatures, which is randomly set upon their creation. This age is always within their [MAXAGE:min:max], and they should die once that number is reached. If a creature doesn't have a [MAXAGE] tag, like elves and goblins, then they won't die of old age.

This can have a few quirks, though. Sometimes the death doesn't occur when it should, and the creature will continue to live until the game notices them. Since history stops after world generation, overly-old creatures will only be recognized once they are loaded onto the local map, which is either when they visit your fort in Fort Mode, or when you visit them as an adventurer. It seems that you have had the luck to have more elderly leaders than what I've seen.

I'm pretty sure that was a test of courage vs. obedience or something where you'd only pass when you point that out. Or fail, depending on what kind of people HR needs.

Or your HR sucks, in which case my condolences.

HR sucks. I think I raged here last test because there were questions that required information the teacher never bothered to teach us.

This time the teacher was distracting, she was randomly surfing the internet and making noise, but when a student showed up five minutes late she burst out screaming about how he was the one distracting everyone, when most people didn't even notice him slip through the door.

There was a woman at the cash register who bought a lottery ticket, scratched it out, then used the winnings to buy another ticket, scratched it, and so on until their wallet was empty, while I stood waiting to pay for over fifteen minutes.
That right there is an addiction. Rough things.

Worst part is that this was not the first time I've seen someone do this. One time I saw someone take out their bank card after they emptied their wallet and kept playing.

Today I had a Human Resources test. The short answer seemed fine, but the multiple choice section was all sorts of stupid.

Some of the wording didn't make sense. Some questions that weren't so much questions as they were statements, leaving me with no idea what they wanted. Some answers that nothing to do with the questions. In other questions the answers were all synonyms.

Some questions weren't even full sentences, and were partially cut away, leaving out the actual question part. Some of the answers were the same.

I've tried playing as humans before, back when I was new to modding. Of course, that meant I had no idea what I was doing, and couldn't do too much, since I was missing a few reactions and had no military or nobles. I did have one decent fort in a glacier, though.

Elves would be interesting to try, what with the "no metal, no woodcutting" rules. Though it would probably take a lot of modding to work. I remember there was an old elf mod floating about, but it is probably outdated by now.

Another interesting job interview.

It's fun when the people interviewing you can't really describe the responsibilities of the open position.

It is probably because for a lot of them, they don't have straight forward responsibilities and basically boil down to "do what boss tells you"

There is also fact that some companies simply don't have a dedicated Human Resources department, and just grab whoever is available to be your interviewer, regardless as to whether they know about the job or not.

There are also people whose sole job is to conduct interviews, have little experience with the job itself, and are basically reading off a questionnaire.

Plus there are a few interviewing "techniques" that require you to not talk about the job at all.

art

Oh hey, Bubsy! I haven't seen him since I was jus--

What the hell am I looking at? It's still better than Bubsy's cartoon, at least.

E: And then I reached level three. That is quite different from the first two levels.

E2: Just beat the game. ART indeed.

Today is conspiring against me.

I lost marks on an assignment for something that wasn't even on the rubric. I lost all the marks in an entire section, one that made up the majority of the assignment's grade, for something we didn't even know about.

The program I have to use for my computer course is about as anal as it gets, there was one part where I had to place an image on a document within a millimeter of where it wanted me to put it.

At least I got a ride home today. But I had to pump and pay for gas in return. There was a woman at the cash register who bought a lottery ticket, scratched it out, then used the winnings to buy another ticket, scratched it, and so on until their wallet was empty, while I stood waiting to pay for over fifteen minutes.

It's cold and snowing out.

My ass itches. So does my beard.

I should stop now, before I start getting more tedious.

I've got two WTFs at the moment.

1) I can't seem to will myself to leave my computer.

2) I tried putting ghostery on my laptop, but messed up the instillation, unbeknownst to me. Apparently when it is not installed properly, it will open up everything it would normally block as it's own new browser window. As if this thing isn't slow enough already. But a quick re-installation fixed it.
