Forum Games and Roleplaying / Roll to Quest: Land of the Crate.
« on: November 19, 2023, 02:25:27 pm »
It's morning, and you see the sun rise over the end of the world, as you dip your weapon in its waters and take your last ceremonial blessings from the young priest.  All you know is that you must go on this quest, to fulfill the deal struck with the rulers of this artificial world.

You have no orders, no duties, except that you must seek the western shore.

Nobody knows how far it is or what you might face along the way.  The arc of the world reveals, rather than hides, but the lands to the west swiftly shrink into a narrow ribbon.. mountains, cities, deserts, seas, plains.. all into that thin ribbon which stretches up to become the sky.

Who are you, and what do you excel at?

(Pick a name, a description, three things you excel at, and one melee weapon.)

It's just another day on this little blue planet.. or at least, it is for all save yourself.

Well, that's not wholly accurate.  Today, there were many new parents. many romances.  Days of joy.  Days of fun.  People taking the first step on adventures, or returning home to safety.  People in pain, experiencing loss, or enduring suffering.

And you were one apart from them.

What was it that defined your life?  What asset did you have that was always the most valuable to you?

(Choose one)

Your Vitality.  At the heart of it, your health is what let you do anything else.  You were fit, healthy, and physically capable.. it meant that you never needed to worry about your diet, or having to spend weeks laid up.. and you never had to suffer the challenge of a handicap.  Whenever you needed your body to do something, it was there, responsive, and available.. which is not a gift to be taken lightly.

Your Ability.  When it comes down to it, you were a capable person.  You could handle yourself carefully, and you were always in command of your resources.  You could (and did) learn an instrument.  You could (and did) learn how to run things and to make things.  And whenever you needed to use stuff, do stuff, or create stuff, you had what you needed at your fingertips.

Your Mind.  Without your mind, what would you have been?  Understanding and knowledge was the core of your being.  Knowing, understanding, processing, and the capability to see what others miss.  Those were your strengths.  And when you were facing difficulty, your mind, and your memory, was always there to help your efforts, whether you needed recall, comprehension, or intuition.

Your

Your Friends.  You have always understood that you are not alone, you were always in company.  When things are hard, you are there.  When things are blue, so are they.  You were one of those lucky people who knew that they are not alone on their journies through life.

But.. that was then.  This is now.  And it is yet to be seen where you are now bound.

..but it can be said where the journey began.  For what is it which brought you to believe that this day is the first day of your new life?

(Choose two.)

You were strong.
You were fast.
You felt invincible.

You were perfect.
You had the touch.
All things were as one.

It was easy.
It just happened.
Your books were open.

You understood.
You gave someone drive.
You gave life meaning.

Now.. where were you when you learned?  Where were you from?

You were from Alosia.
Spoiler: Alosia (click to show/hide)

You were from the Terpis Union.
Spoiler: Union (click to show/hide)

You were from the South Seas Federation.
Spoiler: South Seas (click to show/hide)

You were from the Berghan Commonwealth

So.. three questions.  What are your answers?

Link to core thread!

Incindia

The school, with its basis as a school of war, is not as impressive an edifice as you were perhaps expecting.  However, like all institutes of higher learning everywhere, it has accumulated a mess of buildings, spires, dungeons, courtyards, cafeterias and dorms, leaving it with no grand unified plan, merely a sprawl of several dozen buildings over about a kilometer square.

Still, as a mundane, (and it's difficult to believe that you really managed to pull it off and actually get here), you know that they'll probably catch the fact that you can't actually do magic and expel you eventually.. you can't possibly carry this on for a full year, can you?  So it's probably best to move quickly.  And not be too worried about the long-term consequences.

The whispers of the other students indicate that the first week will just be deciding what classes to take, finding a place to live, and bouncing off your fellow students, so you should be able to handle that.

You rest uneasily.

First, there is a cave.  In stories caves might be decorated or glittering with gold, homes of dwarves or gnomes, or dragons.  This cave is simple stone, but nonetheless contains a growing evil, a malice.

Then there is a procession of heroes.  A champion, striding tall with glittering armor and a magic sword.  An assassin, moving as a half-imagined shape in the darkness.  A general, at the head of an army of more than ten thousand.  Swifter and swifter they come, the parade of human and not-quite human faces continues, all with the sense that they belong to you.  You, and none other.  All marching to face the dread inside the cave, under a sun being eaten by darkness.

You wake up.  You don't need it put more clearly.  This is not the first night you have recieved these messages, but you mean for it to be the last.  Whatever, wherever this evil is, you will face it, and you will face it with all the power you can raise.

Only.. where do you start?  You have a small pension, courtesy of your unknown father, likely a mandarin of middling rank, paying your mother for special services years ago.  You have a bit of silver, squirrled away from your serving duties at the embassy.  None of the faces belonged to a scraggly beggar girl or a young city woman of limited means.  You're going to need power.

It is the First of January, 1999.

Over the past six months, Earth has been attacked by several giant creatures.  Some resembling enormous terrestial animals.. giant animals of various kinds, and some resembling no creature on earth, like an enormous flowing mass of worm-like tentacles.

All have caused significant death and destruction.  The only common link is that they have all emerged from the seas of the world, and are suprisingly strong and difficult to destroy.  Conventional armed forces have proven of only limited effectiveness.. capable of killing these giant creatures but not doing so before they do great damage.  The only "victory" was in Gujarat, where a gigantic bobbit worm, covered in frost and surrounded by a raging blizzard, was killed by nuclear fire.

In response to this new threat, many nations of the earth have banded together and decided to fund a number of organizations for the "Investigation and development of military capabilities for combating these 'Kaiju' which threaten the Earth."

You are in charge of one of these organizations.

Perks are, (choose one of the following)

Business: More money.  Sometimes it's all you need.
Military: Better feedback on combat equipment.
Black Market: More stuff available on the black market, occasional "Special Deals".
Political: Improved relations with the council of funding nations.
Intelligence: Better information gathering capabilities.

Also.. maybe you are not in charge of one of these organizations.  With the advent of the seemingly impossible Kaiju, a number of individuals have emerged into public view.  They are generally collectively termed "Mad Scientists."

Now while mad scientists are, for various personal reasions, more or less incapable of leading whole organizations, they can still accomplish many things.  As such, they may be valuable, if independant, allies to the various anti-Kaiju organizations.  Perhaps you are one of those individuals instead.

Do note that while both categories are quite different, there is some overlap.  Conventional organizations will do lots of research, and mad scientists will be capable of making things.  Both are going to be necessary to accomplish victory.

(Thanks to Nirur Torir.)

Roll To Dodge / Battlemobs, Turn 2 Complete! Killbots gonna Kill.
« on: March 02, 2018, 01:33:17 pm »
Welcome to Battlemobs!  This thirteenth season has a whole new set of competitors in this, the one and only source for cute critter combat action.

Over the course of the next eight weeks, our teams will shape their peaceful societies of prairie dogs into ruthless killing teams.  Only one may survive to win the championship!

Now for this season, our teams are...

Mutators with Puppyguard and Ozark
Bloody Murder with Mallos
Lightning Clan with Egan_BW
Rodents of War with Pavellius
Geogophers with Beirus
Random Raiders with ziizo and Rockeater
Loffles with Secheral
Rodent Awesome with Kittytac
fluffy wabbits with leodanny
Fighting death hamsters with Midnight Jaguar

What is this?
A combat game where instead of players fighting each other, they shape intelligent, cute, animals into groups of bloodthirsty killing machines.  Fights will be resolved in a similar manner to that of wargames, and players will recieve statistics that will indicate how good their societies are at fighting.

How does it work?
Each turn is a week mechanics-wise.  In these weeks, players may introduce something to their furry minions, or they may try to reshape their society in some way.  Twice during the preparation period, magic genemodding will be possible, where the players may physically reshape their cute little ones.

After each turn, the results of your actions will be revealed to each turn.  In addition, as this is supposed to be an entertainment show, a summary of the general actions taken by all teams will be made public, although the results will remain private.  Teams may be of any size, and solo players will be allowed to compete with groups.

First off, though, are signups.  Who wants to shape cute, intelligent, tool-using prairie dogs into a combat force?  Please list the name of the team you are joining as well.

Too long have the city-dwellers lived their lives of soft luxury and peace.  Their evil magic, their slave legions, their palaces of marble and gold.  Beneath, they are rotten and soft below the shining luxury.  It is time!  Time for the strong!  Time for the nomads and the reavers, the raiders and the warriors, the free, to come, and to conquer.  The barbarians!

I need volunteers, five of them.  And some waitlisters, as the life of a barbarian is nasty, and short.. but it is glorious.  And as it is known, glory shall live forever.

Currently accepting waitlisters.

Character sheets:

Name.

Description.

Your chosen weapon type.  Has to be melee, as you are a BARBARIAN!

Lastly, your chits.

There are only three stats in Barbarverse.  All rolls in barbarverse are subject to the will of the gods, and will succeed or fail on the flip of a coin.  However, barbarians, being the free men and women they are, have the ability to force their will upon the world.

Barbarian Strength!
Everyone knows barbarians can beat any mortal man in combat, but some foes and situations may require truly heroic might.  For these, you may spend a chit to automatically succeed.

Barbarian Cunning!
Everyone knows barbarians are not civilized men, and as such, are capable of sneakiness and dirty tactics that no civilized man can understand.  However, there may be something great in your way that requires something truly heroic.  For these, you may spend a chit to automatically succeed.

Barbarian Companions!
Although every barbarian is free, some choose of their own will to follow others.  When they do so, there is no greater loyalty than that of your fellow barbarians.  If you are in a situation where another barbarian is needed to help you, you may spend a chit to automatically succeed.

In addition, as barbarians are heroic figures, they take three blows to fall, and have three hit points.  Failing in a deadly situation will cost only one.  You may heal at the end of a day, by telling stories about your might and accomplishments to your fellow barbarians.

Also, note that the soft living of the grasslanders will blunt your sharp edge.  If you should choose to rest for a second time in the same spot, you must spend one of your chits due to the soft living.

Who is in?  Put your sheet up, and choose a distribution of eight chits.

Players.  5/5

Roll To Dodge / Roll to Save the World. [4/4] Turn Eighteen: Wrong Number.
« on: December 02, 2014, 11:28:16 am »
What is this?

It's a fairly serious, non-minimalist RTD, with much of the setup left to the dice...  and the Happy Fun Table of Doom.

Happy Fun Table of Doom?

Yes. The thing that tells me what you are, where you are, and what horrible disaster is happening to you and your people.
The backstory is.. something.  I'll have it written after the Happy Fun Table of Doom lets me know the bones of your story.  You could be..

A caveman, trying to save your isolated tribe from alien robotic infiltrators!  A thirty-kilo predator dinosaur running from sheets of fire from the sky!  A draftee, sent into the line of battle against the evil beast-things of Kragg, with your rifle starting to look awfully inadequate.  An initiate of Zinglon the nose, in the guild-house whence the the blood plague came forth.

So.. are there stats and stuff?  How does this work?

Pretty straightforward.  Most actions, events, and combat are rolled with a d12.  Tone is to be pretty serious, it's the situations that are bizarre, so don't expect to find an effective solution for the braineater parasites without tools, patients, or even knowing that it is braineating parasites what are causing people's skulls to explode.

As for stats, and character sheets, what is required will depend on what scenario is selected, and the results that the Happy Fun Table of Doom serves up.

Current Characters:
Scenario 1

Drak Flyson, Toaster.

I've been reading these books for some time, and think they're amazing, and would like to discuss some of the hidden plot points and secretive elements in them..  most of them would be spoilers.

Would anyone else like to delve into some of the details that Patrick Rothfuss put into his work?

Play With Your Buddies / Skyrim drew the short straw, a TES V LP.
« on: January 01, 2014, 11:12:41 am »
A few years ago, the latest game in the Elder Scrolls series was released, TES V: Skyrim.

It is a first-person CRPG where you are supposed to explore the Tamrillic province of Skyrim and save them from their infestation of dragons.  You do this by exploring dungeons, finding loot, increasing your character skills, and adopting broken infinite use abilities such that you are controlling an unstoppable powerhouse of doom.

I will not be doing any such thing.  Instead, well, things will go.. otherwise.

DF Suggestions / Storyline generator for Adventure mode.
« on: January 19, 2010, 02:45:24 pm »
Another project I'm following is a space-shooter/MMO called Infinity:TQFE.

Here's the thread where they discuss giving player characters automatic backgrounds via a generator.

http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infinity/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=75&topic=8140.0

It might be something to think about if you want to provide more background for new adventure mode players.  If the game begins with a short summary of the new character's life, it would be a good way to provide them with some idea of what to do.

We have religions, and they have gods which have names, spheres, and appearances.  How about some items associated with them?  For example, we could have a god associated with mini-forges, Warhammers, and oak.  What do you think?
