DF Gameplay Questions / Why is my well dry?

I built a well over a reservoir and it was working fine until I refilled the reservoir, made a stupid mistake with my levers and had some *fun* with flooding. OK, I got that under control but now, although the reservoir was full the well reported "dry". I drained the reservoir totally, smoothed the floor and eliminated all "piles of mud". Still dry. I tried rebuilding the well. Still dry. This is frustrating as hell. I have a clear path down to water but the buckets not finding it for some reason.

Any reasons I might not have thought of why a well which appears to have a water source might report "dry."?

What are the various metal types such as "burning metal" "shining metal" etc. listed in the Metal Smith's build menu? I can't find anything in the Wiki about this.

I've picked up DF again after a long hiatus. I'd forgotten just how much "fun" it can be.

THis time I am determined to pierce an aquifer. I'm trying to follow the tutorial in the Wiki exactly and can get through the upper layers no problem. Then, when I get to the last layer, the "fun" intensifies.

I get the upper half walled off, then at the step in the tutorial where it says: "Deconstruct the ramp in the source tile of the pump and build a wall there." I get completely stuck. It's weird. When I start building the wall, it very quickly gets to the point where it says "Construction Nearly Done", with maybe 2 or 3 cancellations only. Then it just won't go any further. I see my dwarves getting to the site, but nothing more happens. It cancels again and again with "site submerged." Months and months of game time go by and more "fun" starts to happen elsewhere in my fortress. Why did it get this far so easily and then no more?

Any suggestions or help appreciated.

Utilities and 3rd Party Applications / Stonesense bug?

I can't get stonesense to work properly. I open it with the df hack command line "ssense" and the image is obscured by a running line of red text. I think it is a dump from the announcement window but not sure because the font is so small. Is this a bug and is there a way to make it stop?

I am trying to use the df hack "stonesense" and the image is obscured by a running stream of text. This appears to be a dump from the announcement window but the font is too small to read. Is this a bug and is there a way to make it go away?

I'm not see nventory in the menu under or when I select an individual dwarf with [k]

Is that maybe a DF Hack thing? I've currently got it disabled.

Just picking up DF after a long hiatus.

Question: how do you view the owned objects of a dwarf or what he is wearing? All I see in the profile under his name is the number of owned objects, not the specifics? I seem to remember there is a way to do this but after considerable trial and error and searching the wiki I haven't found it. Thanks in advance.

If you have more than one repeating order queued up in a workshop will it alternate between them or continually work on the first one until it runs out of material?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I built new workshops and stockpiles and trashed the old ones. No bins. Things are more or less working now. I will try and streamline the workflow and hope I can keep enough shoes and coats on the little buggers to keep them from all killing each other before the next caravan arrives.

And yes, hospital does seem to be a problem.

Thanks but still doesn't work. The workshop setting was already "use any cloth". The nearby Loom is successfully taking from the bin, but the Clothier won't.

This game can be so frustrating fun at times. I am not able to get the textile/clothing industry working.

I have
   -farm plots producing pig-tails,
   - a farmer's workshop, a loom and a clothier in close proximity
   - a stockpile next to the clothier set for "cloth"
   - one bin full of mixed cloth in the stockpile (plant-fibre, wool, yarn, thread)

BUT every time I try and order the clothier to make something the job is suspended with the message, "no unused plant-fibre cloth."

It's right there in the bin, you gnarly little retard!

Please help, what could I be missing?

Is the squad interface buggy or am I doing it wrong? I try and select a cell in the grid (month/squad) and sometimes it takes the changes and sometimes the changes are applied somewhere else. This is especially true for "change name." Also, the "cut and paste" feature seems to behave in weird and unpredictable ways.

Is there any hack out there which simplifies this god-awful interface?

I am trying to link a lever to a door, as part of a resevoir/well system. When I set up the linkage the construction is always suspended with the message "construction suspended, could not find path." This is in spite of the lever being just down a straight unimpeded corridor from the door. What is going on and how to correct it?
